.Did I read right that the aircraft had previously struck it's tail on takeoff? A previous plane with this record ended up crashing with several hundred dead, the worst air disaster in history.
Yes. I believe that happened in 2001 and the plane had logged thousands of flight hours since then.
The previous aviation accident was JAL 123, which was attributed to an incorrect repair of the tail after a tail strike on the 747. The repair used two plates to cover the repair to the tail instead of one plate. The two plates used to cover the area of stress were riveted with the seam parallel to the crack instead of perpendicular. The repair lasted seven years before it gave way and caused a decompression which destroyed all hydraulic systems.
The loss of life is still the largest for a single aircraft incident. The death toll could have been less had the Japanese government accepted the aid immediately offered by the nearby Yokota Air Force Base. USAF had helicopters over the site within 20 minutes while it was still daylight and had rescue operations scrambled to provide aid. The personnel at Yokota were told to stand down and that the Japanese would take care of it. By the time the Japanese had spotted the wreck themselves, it was dark and rescue operations were delayed until the next morning. There were 4 survivors in the end. One stated that there were many more moaning and screaming after the crash but the sounds died out during the night.
The length of time since the tail repair on the Metrojet may be irrelevant, it all depends on the number of pressurizations and depressurizations the aircraft went through.
I'll leave it at I will not be shocked if it's them.
