are the passwords capital sensitive? i have used the same password for everything for several years so i am sure it was the correct one and i tried it several times. now i have been given a password with 8 numerals which i'll never remember . is there any way to get my old password to work again?

Have you tried going into your User CP, and then one of the options along the top is 'Edit password'. You could go into that, put in the new password you've been given and then revert back by re-puttting your old one back in
