Why can't I allocate my points online!

I was trying to book VGF online today at the 7 month window and I have points in my SSR and BLT. I wanted to use the rest of my 2013 points from my SSR contract along with borrowing 160 from 2014 and use the balance from 2013 BLT. This would leave me with 2013 points in BLT which I plan to bank and use for the 11 month window but it would NOT let me do it! I finally had to call MS and they were able to do it but I still cannot understand why the on-line res system would not let me do it! When I clicked on borrow it would NOT let me borrow SSR point until I clicked 2013 BLT points then it would only let me borrow the balance (using ALL BLT 2013 points)

Has anyone else experience this? Very frustrating!

The online system is not configured for some transactions. You can't change reservations either (like drop a night). Remember before last year, there wasn't even an online system available.

Yes, that's the way the online system works. It won't let you borrow if there are any usable current year points. Of course, that's only an issue for reservations 7 months or less out.

I wanted to book VGF, but I didn't want to use my current year BLT or VGC points, and needed to borrow to complete the reservation.
In my case, since I was planning to bank the BLT and VGC points anyway, I just banked them a little sooner than I would have liked. Then I could borrow as needed to complete the online reservation.

Yea I know but I thought I would be able to "tell" the system which points I want to use for the reservation - I guess wishful thinking! At least before the online system everyone had to call so no big deal it was a even playing field now on line is open 1 hour before calling so I can see it causing some issues if you want to make a ressie with specific points and are not able to do so in high demand times. :(

I've had the same problem you experienced when booking on the phone with MS. I was booking 7 months out and wanted to borrow points from one contract and not touch the current UY points that were available in another contract. MS would not let me borrow points while I had current points available. I ended up booking a dummy reservation with the current UY points to get them out of play, then made my real reservation using borrowed points, then cancelled the dummy reservation. Others have had the same issue when booking directly with MS so what you experienced when booking online is not necessarily a shortcoming of the online booking system but may just be DVC policy. The good news here is that MS was willing to do what you requested and that has not been the case for some of the rest of us!

With four contracts, we have had the same problem you have had. Although, for that matter, one time when I called the make the reservation, they screwed the allocation up then too. I always know exactly what points from what contracts, from what years I want to use, so it is irritating not to be able to just make those selections with the online system.

They will redo the allocation for you if you call, although it is not an instantaneous thing, takes a couple of days. This delay, makes me think they either have a very small team that works on this, or there are an overwhelming number of requests for reallocation, or both. If there are a large number of requests, maybe they will eventually see the wisdom in adding a true allocation system to the online booking engine that works like we would like it to. We can only hope and keep asking for it.:)

It is a software issue. DVC's computer system wants all available points from each contract used before other contract points come into play.

I had an issue one time when trying to book a reservation at 7 months using only banked points from 4 contracts. The CM couldn't do it and told me it couldn't be done period. I had to get a supervisor to do it.

Lets say I have a trip for 200 points and I had to borrow 50 points. If I had to shorten the trip and didn't need the borrowed points, I am assuming I can bank the 2013 points so the system would be forced to use the 50 borrowed points instead right? Or are the points spoken in the system and if i bank points already used for reservation, does it cancel the reservation. I'm hoping its all automated so I won't lose the borrowed points. Very sorry if i am confusing :crazy2:

Yes, you can use the borrowed points first, and then bank any unused current year points. The system usually does that, so you probably won't have any issues.

Great. Thanks for the info.

Software issue.

Is it a software issue or a software feature?
Borrowing is a final transaction and can't be reversed. The scenario of the OP is the one time someone will want to borrow when they don't "need" to borrow.
So the self service site may be designed to protect the majority of users from unwanted, unintentional or accidental borrowing.
Many people don't get that borrowing moves the points into the previous use year where they must be used in that use year or expire.
So MS probably wants a CM to make sure the member wants to borrow when they don't need to, rather than make it possible with a few clicks.

Imagine them getting calls from people saying "I just wanted to see it work. You can put them back now.". ::yes::

My thought exactly. I've been in IT for many years and I am constantly confronted with people doing things in systems I've designed that were never intended.

We call it a PEBKAC error.

Yes. That is often where the problem exists. :thumbsup2
