Why buy in different Resorts

OK, this is an easy one, but I am new to DVC, so can you please explain the advantage of owning some points at SSR and points somewhere else? I mean, other than the fact that you have more points

Some people like to own at a second (or third...etc.) resort so they have the the 11-month booking window there. We have points at both OKW and HH and the 11-month window has definitely been an advantage, particularly at Hilton Head.

Hi there,

Another potential DVC'r question (going through ROFR now!). Can you combine your points from multiple resorts? Say I own at SSR and OKW and my use years are different. I am at the 11 month at SSR but not OKW. Can I call and book SSR for an extended stay using some of my OKW points?

Regs,

CJM

Yes you can combine your points or other people points...but only at the seven month window...in order to reserve at the 11 month window you must have enough points at that particular resort to cover your ressie.

Count me as one who believes that you should always buy your points as cheaply as possible unless you plan on traveling at christmas or spring break. If you are flexible in your travel times, the seven month window is usually not a problem...I have honestly stayed at my home resort once in 5 years. The wait list has always come through for me as well when i had my heart set on a certain resort....just a thought.

One tactic at owning multiple resorts is the one we use.

We have two contracts of nearly equal point total. Each year we make a reservation using the 11 month home booking advantage at one of the resorts by borrowing the following years points and therefore using two years worth of points at that resort.

The other contract...we bank those points and use two years worth the following year, again with all points having the 11 month home booking advantage.

I disagree with gmboy95's advice which goes against the "Buy Where You Want to Stay the Most" adage that many advocate here. Suffice it to say that the importance of that advice depends on when you travel, how far in advance you can commit to vacation dates, and how flexible you are with where you stay. I don't think it serves any new poster to advise BWYWTS or Buy the Cheapest/Most Years advice without knowing how important these factors are.

I have to agree with Granny on this one. I believe as the DVC membership grows with SSR (and future resorts), it is going to get harder and harder to book non-home resorts at the 7 month window without waitlisting.

All you have to do is look at the "whose on the December waitlist" thread to recognize that the home resort advantage can be valuable. Early December isn't Christmas. October is not supposed to be a busy Disney time.

I own at 2 resorts for the 11-month booking window at both BWV and BCV.

I, for one, like to have all my ressies all set at 11 months. I'd stress too much on a waitlist! I plan out my vacations at least two years ahead, making ressies as soon as I can. Then I relax and wait... :teeth:

We own at almost all of the resorts so that we can keep our options open. The advantage of owning for us is as follows:

OKW - The Grand Villa is one of the best values at Disney. Unless you have the 11 month window it is very difficult to get one

SSR - Points are cheap and you get 12 extra years

HH - Very hard to get into during summer months without the 11 month window.

Vero - Almost impossible to get a Beach cottage during the summer months without the 11 month window

Boardwalk - Very hard to get into for Food & Wine without the 11 month window

Beach club - Very hard to get into during summer months

Wilderness Lodge - Very hard to get into during the Christmas season especilly early December when the required points are very low

You may get in at the 7 month window but as more members are added it will get more difficult.

Just my thoughts

We own at OKW and BCV. We bught 200 points at BCV because we wanted the 11 month window for the F&W and Christmas and New Year's week. We have 300 points at OKW to stay there during the summer in a 1 or 2 bedroom villa. So far this strategy has worked for us.

we own at every resort for the 11 month window ...................sometimes it matters when you want to stay in a certain place at a certain time...............it is especially helpful at times like Xmas.............

:)
I agree with Granny..we own points at BCV and OKW....we can book at the eleven month window for our family vacations, usually borrowing some points from the next year...we then have some left over for a quiet vacation for two!

if you want VWL during early Dec - then you need to own at VWL

if you want BCV or BWV during early Dec and food/wine festavial - again you need to own here

If you want either BCV or HH or VB during the summer - you need to own.

If you are happy staying at SSR and would never want to stay anywhere else - then you are fine.....

I have a few points enough for a studio - offseason (Sept, Oct, Nov, Dec, jan) at both VWL and BWV - so if I want to do either early Dec or food/wine it won't be a problem.

However I have most of my points at OKW - this is great for me!!! I love OKW.....

I only got the other two - BWV - mother loves Epcot and I though then it would be easier to get here back and forth.....

VWL - I tried for one year to get VWL for early Dec and never got it....I brought VWL then.

Hi All,

Something has been going around in my head and thought I should ask. If my contract makes it through ROFR, it has a June use year. If I then purchase and add-on for say Old Key West direct from Disney, will they allow me to make it June as well?

Regs,

CJM

We originally bought SSR points and still like it best...DS would loves SAB in the summer and DH would love to do VWL in December...

My DP have assumed that our January trip to WDW includes them so it eats up all of our SSR points so....

We now have a small 50 point VWL and are waitlisting for BCV so we can rotate an every other year extra trip...

We bought first at OKW, added on a few more times to make 300 points. We love OKW. But when they started selling VWL, I wanted some points there. We bought 100. And when they started selling BCV, my husband wanted some there. We bought 100.

This Thanksgiving, we're staying at VWL for the week. That 100 points (2006 UY), plus our 2007 UY VWL points got us enough points to get a week in a one bedroom. Actually we got four nights (TuWThF) in a one bedroom and three (SaSuM) in a studio. Exactly at 7 months we changed out the Sa into a one bedroom using OKW points. That freed up those points at VWL to get the other two nights in a one bedroom.

I heard that people were on a waiting list for Thanksgiving at VWL a few days later. That 11 month head start got us our week. Banking, using, borrowing and careful planning is the way to make those smaller contracts work.

Yes - in fact, Disney will not sell you a different use year from your master unless you buy at least 150 more (enough for a new contract).

Bes wishes -

I have read in previous posts about people buying small contacts like 25 or 50 points. I thought that they were doing that in order to get into a resort at the 11 months window by using the 25 add on points at that particular resort. So you are saying that if I own SS and have 300 points but want to buy 25 points at BCV it really does not have any kind of benefit because you need 300 add on points at BCV to give you the 11 month window. So is there a benefit to buying a small contract at a second resort?

The small contract does give you a 11-month window for booking at that resort. It can work, especially if you plan to stay in a studio. You can bank one year's 25, use a current year, and even borrow some from the next year's and have enough pts in which to stay at least 5 nights.

It can work great for trips every 2nd or 3rd year, especially if your large lot of points is somewhere else.

Also, it gives you a start since you can also add on or wait list to add another 25 pts later.

In my case, I own 5 contracts and am waitlisted for the 6th and plan to change one over soon to my daughter's name, so she will own her own 50 pt contract and that will start her membership so that she can take advantage of the DVC perks herself.

Okay, I am a little confused. Here is my situation so let me know if adding 25 would help. We own 150 at SS but plan on going every other year. We need 300 points to stay in a 2 bedroom (We have 3 kids). We just came back 2 weeks ago and stayed at BWV at the 7 month window. Now if I purchased 25 points at say BCV would that help me to be able to stay at BCV next time at the 11 month window? I am thinking no because I need 300 at BCV as well. Please explain, I am confused on this one.
