why bother voting

I can understand disliking the electoral college, but Al Gore did NOT get cheated. He lost the electoral vote. It wasn't a new system that nobody had ever heard of before.

I understand that. It's just my opinion, but I think the election should be decided by the popular vote.

You're right, I don't. I still think the electoral college is pointless and out of date. Of course, you have to consider that I'm from Oklahoma and I feel like my votes for president never count. Oklahoma is always red.

Try being a Republican in New York :p

I think absentee ballots should be done away with & people should only be allowed to vote in the city/state their principal residence is in--meaning students should vote in their home town. They shouldn't be allowed to vote in the city/state where they're in college if their legal/main residence is somewhere else. What about all the people here in the US but not citizens? Haven't lots of them been registered to vote too? Where's their proof of residency/citizenship? Maybe some of the problems can be resolved by having voters registered long before election day?

I heard rumors some huge sports teams were being signed up to vote in the state their team's in. Those members should only be allowed to vote where their home town is--for instance; Brett Farve now is a member of a New York team but doesn't he normally live in Mississippi? Then he should only be voting in Mississippi, NOT New York.

Nuff said; guess I'll get off my soapbox...

You're contradicting yourself.... unless you want everyone to hop on a plane the day of the election just to vote, we NEED absentee ballots.

The EC was established so less populated areas would be protected. If we did away with it, no one would pay attention to Iowa or South Dakota. States can change over time (i.e. Virginia).

I like the protection and the wisdom of the electoral college.

Good old Charlie Gibson said that this was the lowest Republican turnout in years. Imagine if they had gotten out there and voted!

I am looking at the news and it shows such a close race in the popular vote, but it doesn't matter does it?!! it is all about the electoral vote. It usually is pretty close on as to popular siding with electoral, doesn't seem so here. :sad2:

I agree- I am very much against the electoral vote- it make no sense and makes it possible for the candidate that gets the most votes to not win makeing him/her NOT the peoples choice at all. I would love to see it done away with!

Obama won and if those republicans had gotten out and voted he would have won won.

I think a lot of people woke up this morning and realized HOW important their vote was. I didn't like it when the election was "stole" from Gore. I would never think Why bother voting though:confused3

You need the absentee ballots - how else would many of our military vote?

My view? If you don't vote, you don't get to complain. As a Republican, I say shame on them, and I say it to any Democrat that stayed home too. People have died for our right to vote and to ignore it is just wrong.

(Climbs down from the soapbox)

ITA I mean we are a democracy right? And if that is the case then Gore should have won then. I didn't really follow politics before and now that I do I don't like the way it is run. I know it has run this way for years. But like I said why bother voting if it means nothing.

Our government is set up as a Representative Republic, where we select people to make the decisions, based upon the wishes of the people who sent them to office.

After all of the garbage the Republicans have thrown around, they could not turn out their base that was energized by Palin?

Maybe they turned off their own base with all of the false and negative ads?

Irrelevant thread because Obama won the electoral and popular vote.

This is why you "bother".....Missouri is STILL not called.

I think that just proves the point though about the electoral college -- it's obvious then all the votes in Missouri mean nothing at this point, the race is already over due to the electoral college.

It won't matter which way the state goes, it won't change the results.

Well as a Missourian it is important to ME.

What's interesting is that we elect every other office but the President by popular vote.

For starters, the writers of the constitution wanted it that way. That might seem like a cop-out comment, but I don't mean it that way. They wanted the states to elect the president, not each individual person.

Then why are the states weighted unequally?

If the framers wanted the President elected by the states, shouldn't each state get an equal vote regardless of size (population)?

Why does California get 55 EVs while Montana gets 3 (or whatever they get)?
