Why are you against polygamy?

Watching Sister Wives. I would never do it. I would be so jealous everyday, it would drive me nuts. & the thought of my husband being with anyone else just grosses me out.

But, really who cares if people do it? I just don't see how it affects me to the point where I would have a negative view of it.

Just wondering, aside from it being illegal, why are people against polygamy? & I wonder what the rationale is for it being illegal anyways?

I think there is some concern about these families being a burden on the tax-payer.
They are often on benefit programs I understand.

Also I worry about the children -especially young girls , the message it sends to them and the possibilities of sexual abuse (Warren Jeffs type stuff)

I think part of the illegality of it is all those other wives (and kids) can get financial help, food stamps, etc through the state as they can't use another woman's husband's income on taxes and stuff.

Aah, I didn't realize that-about the tax payers burdens-makes sense. I guess I look at the Browns & Warren Jeffs totally different. Warren Jeffs situation seemed more like a cult.

Example: Heard of a lesbian friend who said how same sex marriage should be allowed/legal because "love doesn't have bounds, people should be allowed to marry whomever they want, etc." When she was asked about polygamy I was surprised that she was totally against it!

I am against it because it's so patriarchal. If it was polyamory, with sister wives AND brother husbands in compounds and everyone was truly free to choose, then I'd be, eh, whatever. But I truly don't think plumbing should dictate rights and limits.

I really don't think the girls who are born into this religion/way of life have much of a choice to leave and that is wrong IMO.

I say that what any consenting adults do when it comes to marriage is up to them. Man/woman, woman/woman, man/man, 1 man/multiple woman, 1 woman/multiple men it does not affect me & it's none of my business.

What makes them different from the gazillion single mothers out there or the parents raising kids with no support from the opposite parent?

It's not something I would choose, I find it demeaning and just gross but then again, I know women who know their husbands cheat or have long term mistresses, some multiple mistresses and they put up with it, so what is the real difference?

I don't think it is different from cheating or having long-term mistresses either.

This is what bothers me about it. And the way it is practiced in the fundamental community bothers me because it is abusive.
