Why are the room charging limits diff. for each resort?

I guess what I'm trying to say and get across is that I just don't feel it's right to have different limits at the resorts.

If you stay at ASM, put a credit card 'on your account', then go over to DTD, walk into the Art of Disney store and buy a $24,000.00 painting this is what will happen:

Store's PC will read your key-card, "call up" your hotel, Hotel PC will say "ok" -- then instantly it will call up your credit card company, if they say "ok" - you're out the door with your painting -- did you exceed a "limit"?

ONLY in the sense that your hotel's pc is programmed (with your permission) to present a charge to your credit card company once your account balance has reached (in the case of a value) $ 500.

This is not discrimination. It harms no one. It's designed to make the business workings go easier for everyone. If you elected express checkout when you checked in, the ONLY time you would have to go to the front desk is if Visa/Amex/Mastercard (or whoever) declined the charge.

I am more likely to spend more on souvies and what not now seeing I'm not breaking the bank w/ my hotel.

Your not 'breaking' any 'banks', unless your credit card company has a problem with your account.

I also planned on charging our MNSSHP tickets to our room upon arrival and upgrading our tickets. So that's 1/2 our limit right there. then a quick stop in the gift shop for a Pal Mickey for the little one and we only have $200 left.

Again, it's not a limit. The ONLY limit set, is the one by your credit card company. If that acount (visa etc) is in good standing, and your charges will not put you over your credit card account limit -- then there's NO problem or hassel.

It is my opinion that Disney does split quests up into financial brackets with those staying in value resorts at the lowest level.

I think the formular should be based on length of stay and members in your party. Yes the per night room charge does vary from one level of resort to another but I find that I spend just about the same amount for meals and other things no matter what resort I am staying at this time.

As to the room charge: It is not billed to you on a daily basis. If you have not paid in full before arrival you will have to make payment of the full balance at check in. This is not just a pre-approval but actual full payment by cash, check, or CC. Once again daily cost of room will not factor into your room charge privileges.

This is, I think, one of the main reasons why resort snobs exist. For myself it makes little or no diiference what resort a person is staying in. I don't care what a persons "net worth" is. When I meet someone for the first time I do not ask to check thier financials, nor would I ever ask a person how much money they make [or are worth] and I don't think Disney should be in the bussiness of pre determining how much a quest should be able to charge to a room.

I can see Disney requiring a minimum amount [$500 sounds right to me], but at check in a quest should have the ability to ask for more money on thier room card. The only limiting factor should be left to the quest. If they have cash, or travelers checks, or a CC that will support the extra amount on the key card they should be allowed to do so at check in, not have to return in a few days to put more money on the key card.[/QUOTE]
Thank You at least someone out there sees where I'm going w/ this.

As for my comment about "breaking the bank" I ment my own personnal bank. I am saving $500 staying at POP rather than a mod. So what I ment was I'm not breaking "MY" bank and I have more money to spend on other items. I have no problem w/ my cc account!

but at check in a quest should have the ability to ask for more money on thier room card.

Disney doesn't apply a credit onto your room key, it simply (on their internal computer system) says (depending on the level of your hotel) at what point, when charges you make to your room will be passed onto your credit card company for payment.

The only limiting factor should be left to the quest.

It is - yours and your credit card company/or cash placed on account.

If they have cash, or travelers checks, or a CC that will support the extra amount on the key card they should be allowed to do so at check in, not have to return in a few days to put more money on the key card.

You can, I've done this proably 25 times. When you check in, in addition to linking your room account with a credit card, you can put cash on your account. Some CM's will have to seek advice as to how to do this, but it's really quite easy. They open up the folio side of your account, and can take Dollars, checks, travelers checks, Disney Dollars and record that as a credit (in your favor) on your account. When you do this, those funds will be depleted prior to Disney charging your credit card.

But the amount they will preauthorize has nothing to do with the amount you're paying for your room. Upon check-in, they charge my entire cost for the room itself to my credit card right up front. So the difference in limits has nothing to do with how much the difference is in the room rates. As other posters have said, maybe they've done some market research. :confused3 I disagree with the differences ... I believe you should be able to decide how much you want preauthorized. If I'm staying at a value resort, I charge waaayyyy more to my room than if I'm staying deluxe 'cause the money I saved on the hotel goes for more "fun stuff" !!!

If you don't like the limit offered at your resort, be sure to fill out some sort of customer comment card and let them know. They can't/won't change it if they don't know that people are dissatisfied. And I'm sure they must keep some sort of stats on how many people set up another charging limit if they reached theirs earlier in their stay. This would indicate a need for changes in limits as well.

I know, and agree completely what the OP is saying!!
It bugs tremendously that when I stay at the Poly I can usually get thru my stay w/out having to charge and clear out my account.
When I stay at the AS I have to at least once during the week. Not only is this time consuming it is sometimes impossible.
A couple of weeks ago I tried to get someone to clear off my account one morning on our way to a PS and the ASMu had every single front desk person was checking in people. The line was a good 40 deep and I was told to just clear my account I had to wait in the check-in line. Every other time I had gone straight to Guest Services and they took care of it.
I end up carrying my credit card w/ me everywhere but I prefer to see all of my charges on the final printout.

I hit my $1500 preauthorization at YC while in the hotel gift shop. All they did was ask if I wanted the charges to be processed and they could set up another $1500 preauthorization. I didn't have to go to the front desk, call or anything.

It limits their liability on loss.

Its fairly likely that a Grand Floridan guest may spend $1000+ in a day on room charges. Perhaps it doesn't happen every day, but I'd guess it isn't rare. So its inconvient to put the limit too low, or they bump into it too often.

But its unlikely that a Pop guest will spend $1500 in a day, more likely that they will spend something less than $500. The guest won't bump into the limit too often.

But if the cards get stolen, they have a $1500 potential loss on the GF - but they can afford to eat that on occation when the room costs $300 a night. At Pop, they have a potential $500 loss, which they feel they can eat when the room costs $70 a night.

I have no problem with the spending limits. It hasn't been a hassle for us ever to just start over once we get close to the limit.

It's a risk, a liability, for Disney to allow you to allow anyone to recieve merchandise or services and having a credit card charged at a later time. Some team of analysts in a back room somewhere have gone through all the numbers, spending patterns based on resort, the risks of offering credit, the resources spent on collections - and set these "limits". There's no personal judgement call about who should be able to spend more money, someone who has the resources to stay at a deluxe or someone who is saving money by staying at a value. It's not personal.

How do you know what your room credit limit will be before you check in?

How do you know what your room credit limit will be before you check in?

Again, it's not really a "limit".
It's simply the dollar value once reached on your room charges that prompts the charges to be passed onto your credit card company for payment to Disney.
(assuming you linked your room account to a credit card)

It is well known that currently staying in the follow 'class' of resort the following dollar values 'trigger' your charges being presented to your credit card company for payment (but you don't have to do anything other than sign at check in once)

Value Resorts = $ 500
Moderate Resorts = $ 1000
Deluxe Resorts = $1500

It also depends on your length of stay... we stayed at CBR for 10 days and our limit was $1500

Wow, now I know I really am 'scum', it must've been the cooler and grocery bags....

We stayed at the Polynesian, paid for our package before arrival, and we were given a limit of $500... I didnt question it at all! I also came at the end of each day and paid my balance in cash so I wouldnt have any surprises! (and to make sure there were no accounting problems - on my end of course!) I even paid by a different credit card for my e -nights too... (because I brought the cc, and not the room key actually!)

I must be the exception in this case!! :rotfl: I am staying in a deluxe and prefer no room charges keeping in mind all my expenses will be paid prior to check in...I have my empty milk jug, filling it with dollars, nickels and pennies...and that is what we will spend over the room, tickets, and free dining...NO EXCEPTIONS...I plan to have about 600 saved up for extras by then. We will make due with what we have. Anyone else doing this??

OMIGOD!!! I do that exact same thing too - but it's in the bottom drawer of my dresser... I separate the pennies, the nickels and ime, the quarters and I try hard to try my loonies in there too and the occasional toonie. Once a month, we have a "rolling fest". A couple years ago, we actually saved almost $800 in one year and bought a new entertainment stand/unit from Ikea. This year we didn't do so hot and only saved about $260 and exchanged it for $200 US which we spent in Mexico very easily ($25 US for cab rides almost everywhere in the South by the Belize border - I told them I was Canadian once and they dropped it to $23). I'm dying to see how well we can do by this December for our next Disney trip...

a concierge nickel and dimer???? I NEVER!!! LOLOLOL :rotfl: JK!!! I have mine in my milk jug...I even put 3 20's in that I won at the casino the other night after only 30 mins of being there I tripled my money and left...te thought of having extra Disney Dollars kept me from going broke!!!! :cool1: I even painted the circle indented part of the jug and put mouse ears on it!! Now everytime the kids do a chore or find money somewhere I throw or they throw some coin in!!! I am excited to see my end product, so far we have 140 in bills, haven't counted change yet. I started this about a month ago and have since moved my Dec trip to Sept YIKES!!!! :rolleyes1 I hope I can keep this up

So it all comes down to Disney charging the card every whatever dollars depending on the resort ? We always use a debit card for DCL, and they always charge it after $400...way less then the daily limit. As long as I don't have to make an extra stop at the desk I don't care, but I'll be a little miffed if I have to go to the desk every time my total is over $500 just because I'm at POP. On the Magic my card is usually charged three times...whatever, as long as I don't have to deal with it.

You won't have to go back to the desk so long as your credit card is not declined. :)

One thing I haven't seen mentioned, is people that put down cash for room charging, thats what we do. when we went in April 2004, we put down $1000 at POP had no problems, used our room key for everything and when we checked out, got the $ we didnt spend back in cash. Now, this year, April 2005, Pop said they had changed the limit to $500, we do not use more. so, once we used up the $500, we had to go back to front desk and put down $500 more. I like to have my trip all pre-paid, that includes spending money, so thats why I do this instead of using a charge card(besides, I dont have one, only have debit).

HEHEHEHEHE - I can only afford concierge because I am a nickle and dimer! I used to spend $3 at Starbucks daily, spend the $5 and throw the twoonie in my jar. I figured out of I go to Tim Horton on the other corner and spend $1.40 on a large coffee, that's an extra $1.60 daily savings and I'm still getting my caffeine fix. So I put $3.60 in my jar everyday as opposed to $2. :Pinkbounc

I set that money aside as spending money so it's one less thing I need to worry about and it's money I don't even miss. :bounce:

eeyore45 aka -- "scum"

You are not "scum", I don't know why that amount was used. But on future visits, if you're willing/able to show up at the front desk and plop down $ 500 per day -- why not just deposit $$$ 'on your account' at check in. That way you don't have to go back to the desk? At any point, anyone can request a print off of their folio -- so you know where you are in reference to encurring a credit card charge?

AND AS A FOOT NOTE: when it comes to check out, if you secured with a CC, you ALWAYS have the option of paying in cash, and having Disney reverse the charges to your credit card. :)
