Why are LCD TVs so much more expensive than DLP?

I compared them side by side, and LCD doesn't look any better, but they are twice as expensive. Fill me in.

LCDs are valued more by the marketplace, because they are thinner, and perhaps lighter. That's about it. LCD is a lot more expensive technology, so it needs to have some value advantage like that, or it wouldn't even be offered. With regard to various video characteristics, DLP actually is as good or better.

The biggest difference in price, incidentally, is with the larger sets. LCD gets progressively more and more expensive the larger the set is, while DLP doesn't increase in price as much as you go from 42" to 46" to 50" to 56" to 61".

Yep, flat panel LCD's are much more expensive to manufacture. And with the LCD's, going bigger means you have to build a bigger LCD panel. With DLP, because it's a rear projection TV, making a bigger TV just requires a bigger plastic screen mounted farther away from the projector. So the difference in manufacturing cost between a 42" and 65" DLP is practically nothing, while difference in manufacturing cost between a 42" and 65" LCD is huge.

I just bought a new Sony LCD 1080p. It is very impressive, although expensive.

If you compare LCD Projection vs DLP Projection, the price will be very similar and LCD may even be cheaper.

But comparing LCD Flat panels vs DLP Projection is not a fair comparison.

We just purchased a 42" 1080p Toshiba LCD and love it! According to our sales associate, Sharp, Samsung, Sony and Toshiba are the tops for LCD's.

DH and I hung it over our fireplace and even though it's relatively light, it was still a PITA to hang.

It difficult to keep something suspended while someone else tries to blindly attach cables, but we did it! Then, I decided it was about 6" too high, and we had to do it all over again. :sad2:

Now if DishNetwork would only get their rears out here with our new HD dish and box.

exactly.

we chose LCD over plasma and DLP after about 3 months of research and viewing. whichever you choose, make sure the resolution is 1080i or 1080p.

We chose the 1080p after doing research.

(When I called Dishnetwork, I noticed that their HD boxes were 1080i. When I asked her about 1080p, she acted like she had no clue. We're leasing the box, so I guess eventually technology will catch up.)

Also - one other thing that we learned, was how long these TV's last. After learning that, there is no way on God's green Earth that I'd buy a floor model of either an LCD, or a Plasma.

I think Best Buy was giving away a whopping $200 gift card if you purchased a floor model. Those TV's are on from the time the store opens, until the store closes, seven days a week. :scared1:

Just like a woman. Move it 3" this way, now move it 4" that way...:rotfl:

I experienced that when we bought all new furniture and the new TV right before Christmas. We had to get new furniture, Brutus ate the old stuff.

Right now all we have is the TV. All of the furniture is still on backorder.

Yesterday my whole family met here before going out to dinner and we looked like a bunch of idiots, just standing there in front of the fireplace, watching the football game.

Dishnetwork must've heard me complaining though, because they're on their way!

See??? Women are good at something. We complain rather well. ;)

Woohoo! I get to watch HGTV in HD tonight! Thanks goodness DH is at the firestation! :woohoo:

ETA: Brutus looks like he's saying, "You're such an idiot." in that picture. Make him quit looking at me.

yes, this was our conversation when DH and I were discussing whether or not to pay for Installation on the new Plasma.

DH: "I'm sure we could do this ourselves. It isn't that hard."

Me: "When you say do this ourselves.... Are you having visions of me balancing this 50" Plasma TV that cost more than my car up over our brick fireplace hearth while you stand around and cussing, screaming blaming the kids for losing all your tools and muttering ... "just a second while I figure this out!!!!" over and over .....

DH: "Kinda"

Me: "uh huh, pay the nice guys to do it for us."

It took my husband one and half days to get the TV hung, and the surround sound done.

Other than me standing there holding it (balancing it on my skull was pretty much what I did - thank god for my hard head), I stayed faaaaar away from him. He was not in a good mood.

After he was done, I asked him if he would have rather paid the $500 installation fee and he said no. That's how much he loves his money.

I do all of my own home handyman work myself. You might be aware, I have quite the precious collection of tools...
