Who's used Avis?

We've never considered them before, but we're getting by far the best price via eBookers, even before taking into account the 11% cashback through Quidco. We'll be renting in Texas, not Orlando, but I'd still be interested to hear any comments.

We used them 3 times during the last 12 months (Tampa, Orlando and Phoenix) and DH used them almost weekly in Europe until the middle of last year and then occasionally since then so, yes, we've been happy with them. We booked via the BA website even though the Orlando flight was with VA and we got a good price each time surprisingly.

My only issue was that I had a problem adding DH's Avis Wizard Number to the booking on one of the occasions, because we had booked through a third party (BA) rather than directly through Avis. We didn't want the perk of frequent flyer miles, just that everything be ready for fast departure at the airport.

Otherwise, good vehicles and happy with the service. I can't remember if we used them when we flew to Houston - Texas was a long time ago! DH feels they are easier to deal with and less pushy about trying to get you to upgrade - but perhaps we were just lucky :)

I've never heard of eBookers or Quidco (I really must get more up to date on such things!) - can someone explain how the cashback works?

Thanks

Thanks, Moira. I wasn't even aware BA used them and that's who we're flying with! :o

It's really simple, you just sign up at Quidco's site. Clicking on the links to other sites is usually all you have to do to earn the cashback, which then accumulates in your Quidco account. It does sometimes take a while to come through, but it's free money, so it's a no-brainer. There are now literally hundreds of well known merchants, such as M&S and even Apple.

Moira, do you get to choose your vehicle or is it allocated? Do you remember what makes/models you've had recently?

Vehicles were allocated. However, DH believes that the Avis fleet is generally 'better' (on account of more business accounts I think) than, say Alamo or Dollar, both of which we've used many times. He says we are rarely given a 'poverty spec' (his term) vehicle with Avis, but maybe this has something to do with his profile. We always hire a 7-seater minivan, even when it's just the 2 of us and makes and models leave my memory the moment the holiday is over. DH and son, OTOH, can tell you exactly what we had 15 years ago ;). He's not around to ask right now, but I'm guessing it's not minivans you're interested in anyway.

Hope it works out well for you Deb :)

I've also used Avis a lot and find them better than Alamo - usually a better rate for hire costs, but also nicer cars. Join the Avis preferred scheme and you go straight to the garage to collect the car - no queuing at the desk (works in the UK too).

louise

Thanks, both. We've booked with them and have looked at their Preferred Scheme, but the T&C's preclude bookings through third parties (we've booked via eBookers). In any event, whilst we'd love to jump the queue, we don't actually have an interest in having the keys thrown at us and being away from the desk in under 3 minutes. There's a good chance we might want to have a discussion with them about precisely what cars they've got available. :thumbsup2
