Who's ready for 'Mad Men'????? {spoiler discussion}

Anyone watch tonights show? What is Betty's problem anyway?

I'm sure we're going to find out. I have a feeling it will have to do with an incestuous relationship with her dad that she's probably pushed down in hger subconscious somewhere. Or maybe she helped him hide a crime. Whatever it is, you can bet it's hinky.

Last night's episode was the best of the season! Was it evil of me to laugh during the John Deere scene?:happytv:

Why would Joan quit before she was sure about everything? Unless she wanted to show him that she had confidence in him.

I think Joan will be 'moving on up'.

I think that Joan had given notice back before the infamous dinner party, and she just felt that she couldn't give anyone the satisfaction of taking it back, even if she COULD take it back, given Lane's cost-cutting. (Of course, the irony in that is that Hooker almost surely makes more than she did, being male.) I hope that they find some way of keeping her involved with the show, but I'm not counting on it.

Every single American in that office except Don was thrilled that Guy met with a career-killing accident -- though other than Roger, no one was crass enough to say so out loud. I think that while Don was relieved not to lose his authority, he really felt sorry for Guy, because he appreciates talent, and didn't think that that talent resided in the man's foot. (He also probably thought, "that PDB, he trusted these snakes.") Also, the line about golf was a zinger -- I don't think that Don plays golf.

My favorite scene was the dead Cobra in the basket. The senior people at PP&L are REALLY evil, you know!

My prediction-wasn't it Don's secretary driving the John Deere during the fatal accident?

Me thinks that girl will get the boot and Joan will be back as Don's "Assistant"??

I was thinking the same thing. And I agree with the previous poster, it was only because it was fiction that I could feel guilt free at laughing at the John Deere incident. When Cosgrove brought it into the office, you knew something was going to happen.

What a sign of the times that a man isn't as capable if he isn't a 'whole' man.

I knew when the lawn mower got loud enough that Joan and Peggy needed to shout over it that someone was going to get nailed, but that was crazy!

I loved Roger's line, "Just when he got his foot in the door..." :lmao:

And poor Sally. I loved the last scene between her and Don in this episode.

It was Lois, the hapless idiot "switchboard girl." Her last major scene was when the boys recruited her to make the crank reply call to Peggy's roommate ad ... "I need lots of lotions and unguents."

She did get a shot at being Don's secretary after Peggy got promoted, but he got rid of her very quickly -- and got Jane instead. (And we all know how THAT turned out.) His current secretary seems fairly good at her job.

I'm thinking that we've finally seen the last of Lois now. Just as well, really; it was a bit much to think that someone THAT stupid would keep getting so many second chances.

Not in the private sector, at least :lmao:

I don't think Joan is going to be off the show... just not sure where she'll wind up.

I'm worried for her, though. I think her hubby is a creep and I'm afraid for her... especially now that he didn't get what he wanted. It's scary how someone with the confidence and everything that Joan has at work is pushed aside at home.

I think Betty has mommy issues of some sort... and she's projecting it on to Sally.

I think you're on the money on that one. It's been obvious from every reference to her mother that the whole family revolved around her Mom's wants and expectations, and that she had a LOT of those. The kitchen scene (with the Medgar Evers imagery) illustrates just what a hard woman she probably was. Ironically, I'll bet that except for the class difference, Betty's mother and Don's stepmother were almost surely very similar women. However, Betty worshipped her mother, while Don hated his stepmother.

Betty is doing just what my mother did -- treating her children exactly as she was treated, because her mother raised her to believe that that was the correct way to go about it. My mother's absolute favorite phrase was, "Get tough with yourself!" -- I probably heard that twenty times a week. It was her predictable response any time I skinned my knee, got scratched by the dog, or cried for any reason. She was always terribly afraid that we would somehow grow up to be "soft." (I never met my grandmother, but my eldest sister knew her, and she says that it was obvious exactly where my mother got her ideas about proper childrearing.)

I knew when the John Deere was rode into the office, something was going to go on!

I know that Joan will be back in the show somehow. Either she will go to Gray Agency with the Duck Phillips character -remember how he tried to recruit Pete and Peggy a few episodes ago? OR she will be coming back to Sterling Cooper in a different role because it looks like Mr. Hooker is going to be the office manager. Perhaps Joan will be part of Harry's new media department.. that will be an incredible boost for her.

:happytv: Bert Cooper just called Conrad Hilton excentric (sp). Isn't that the pot calling the kettle black? :rotfl2:

What the heck is up with ICE QUEEN betty? Last night she was warm with her DH in Rome, and once did a little "Happy Dance" in front of her DH about the Town meeting-but otherwise seems wound tight!!

And peter with his neighbor's Au Pair-I'd call that rape:scared1:

I found this show rather strange

And i want JOAN to come back !!

I thought the same thing lsat night - Betty definately has some mood swings!

I have no respect for Peter.

I think this was another "foundation show". We won't understand it for a couple more weeks :confused3

Betty wants out of the suburban-housewife/mommy-box. She was feeling dissatisfied, and the work on the reservoir project made her feel smart again, but the Rome trip was the clincher -- for two days she got to be the jet-set model one more time ... and then it was over and back to the baby. When the town council did the end-run around the water study, that was it; the door to the cage slamming firmly shut again.

Did you notice the wine for breakfast in Rome, right before she called to make the beauty salon appointment? Our Betty has an escalating drinking problem, she's self-medicating.

You may be on to something. Betty may not know how much but isn't she aware that Don made a nice sum of money when Sterling Cooper sold out to the Brits? Other than the redecorating there is no evidence that Don has spent any of it. Maybe she thinks they should flaunt their wealth more, even though she told her brother to "quit counting other people's money" I think she wants people to know she has it.

For the first time last night, I had some sympathy for Don and his cheating. Seems like Betty can only be hot for him when she's had a lot of outside attention, and he's shot the moon for her.

otoh, you can see how she'd be stifled by her home life, when she is perfectly capable of getting the attention she craves from everyone but her hubby, and obviously has talents (fluent Italian, who knew?) that are languishing in her current situation.
