Who's in for GREECE and TURKEY, June 15 2003????

Nathan was telling me today that in Psychology class they've been studying sleep and the effects of sleep deprivation. He said it reminded him of when we went to Barcelona in 2007 - the jet lag was seriously tough. That made me want to ask you all for your "tried and true" tips for minimizing the effects of jet lag.

I travel to Europe on a regular basis. I have tried the no jet lag pills and have worked on the flight overseas and been dead on arrival. This works for me:

The day before an eastbound flight, I eat a high protein breakfast and lunch along with a high carb. dinner (we usually go to Olive Garden for pasta).

On the day I am flying, I do not eat breakfast or lunch and do not drink anything with caffeine, but I drink a lot of water and fruit juice. I fly to Dallas and connect to an overnight flight to Europe. As soon as I'm on the plane, I set my watch to the local time at my destination. It's hard to skip dinner since I'm moderately hungry by that time, but I tell the flight attendant I don't want dinner, but I do want the full breakfast in the morning.

I put on slippers over my socks and get out my blanket, pillow and eyemask. It's usually too noisy to sleep while they serve drinks and dinner, but after that, they turn down the lights, I buckle my seatbelt over my blanket so they can see it and can usually get 4-5 hours of sleep on the plane before they serve breakfast. They may look dorky, but I find that the eyemask and noise-cancelling earphones really help block light and sound.

The flight attendants serve breakfast about two hours before landing. As soon as I can get down the aisle, I wash my face, brush my teeth and put on deodorant. I have a kit of supplies I carry on every flight. Since the in-flight breakfast is often skimpy, I usually buy a more substantial breakfast in the airport or once I arrive in the city.

I make it a point of going & doing once I've arrived at my destination. I do not take a nap in the afternoon, but I usually go to bed between 8-9 PM local time and set my alarm for a normal (7 AM) wake-up time in the morning and operate on local time from then on.

When I'm flying westbound I don't do anything special in terms of eating and drinking but I do try to get some rest. I get home really tired since it's usually a 22-hour day and tend to wake up around 4 AM for the next few days, but I can deal wtih that.

Great tips! Thanks Laura, and everyone else who has shared their tricks for minimizing the effects of jet-lag. When we flew to Barcelona in 2007, that was our first experience in a flight that long plus that much of a time-change. We had a delay leaving from ATL so our 9 a.m. arrival time was actually around noon. By the time we got to the hotel, the only thing my family wanted to do was take a nap - and find something to eat. One boy took a shower while DH and the other boy fell asleep while I tried to get the hotel sorted out (we were to have two rooms but only one was available, plus I wanted to get our DCL check-in done). So it was 3 p.m. by the time I was done - they all had a bit of a rest but not me - but I knew I wanted to see something of Barcelona, so off we went on the HOHO bus for a little bit - but we all ended up nodding off on the upper deck. We finally returned to the hotel, then walked around the neighborhood - found a McD's that was awful but all we could find that the boys might even possibly eat. Thank goodness for pb crackers in my carry-on - that's what we had for breakfast the next day - but even then, no one wanted to get up but me - DH dragged his suitcase to my room so I could have everything ready for the DCL folks to pick up - then he went back to his room and slept - I was so aggravated because our other boy was sleeping in my room and I couldn't go out to explore and leave him alone - I should've had him move to DH's room so they could all sleep! It took another day before we all felt human again.

When we went to London, we arrived about 8:30 a.m. and I knew we didn't want a repeat of Barcelona. Thankfully our hotel room was ready so we checked in - the boys each took a shower and then slept for a bit while DH slept, too. I took a short nap but was too excited to stay in so I went out for a quick walk and found some free wifi :) We also had a light day planned - go to the London Eye and the British Museum, find some dinner, meet some DISers around 7 pm and go to bed by 9:30. The next day we all felt ok - still a little tired but not as much as we had expected.

FYI for those not familiar with the Disney Bears, their names are Duffy and Shellie May, they originated from the Tokyo Disney Resort. We have one of each, they are our "pretend" children as we have them with us on all of our Disney trips. Inside Tokyo Disney Sea park they are more popular then Mickey, just about everyone in the park carries their bear with them!

We first noticed Duffy when we were at Disney Sea in 2007. We couldn't figure out who this bear was until we read the description. I almost bought a Duffy as my souvenir of Disney Sea but I need another plush like I need another hole in my head (my family room is awash in plush). When we saw Duffy at Disneyland last year (the Anaheim one, not Tokyo), we were surprised ... mainly because we knew who Duffy was but nobody else seemed to. :rotfl:

We now have four cruising as we have just adopted a girl, many of you know her already, her name is Shellie May. We now have myself Brian, Marsha, DS Duffy and DD Shellie May. :)

Awesome Mr Tom! :thumbsup2 Congrats to you and your familiy!

Ah - you got us! I knew Duffy was a Disney bear but I didn't know there was a Shellie May! We saw the Duffy bedtime story on our last stay at WDW about how Minnie made Duffy for Mickey to take on a sea journey.

Congratulations on your new daughter! That is wonderful! We adopted a daughter from Guatemala 8 years ago. Did you adopt internationally or domestically (from the USA). How old is she? The process as you know is long and hard but is one of the best things you will ever do! Congratulations on all of your hard work and the wonderful addition to your family! We would love to meet her.

Our buddy Tommy didn't adopt a daughter, he bought a stuffed animal:rotfl2:

Here is a link to explain the Bears which are all the rage in Disney Tokyo. When we went there in 2009, all you saw were Duffy Bears, no Mickeys

Hi speakupjc

Thank you for the kind words, however we haven't adopted a real girl. We have purchased a Disney bear which we pretend is our child. Which isn't to say it wouldn't be great to meet you just the same. :)

can anyone tell me if a fish extender has been set up for this cruise yet? or is it too early i joined one on this site last year right at the last minute and would like to be more organised this time round, thank :goodvibes

Thanks Mr. Tom. You are welcome! Even though I saw that you were getting a new bear I hadn't put the correlation together when you mentioned adopting a child.

There's a form you can fill out to add your information including whether you want to participate in Fish Extender or not.

This link should take you to the ROLLCALL FORM where you can add your information. And you can see the results in this spreadsheet.

Hi all,

We will be joining you on this cruise, myself, my mom, DD (14) and DS (12). I am very excited to be heading back to Europe. For me, it was a tough choice between Venice and Greece. I see some familiar names from our August 2010 Med cruise.

Can't wait to start all the planning!

Susie
