Who's had the H1N1 vaccine?

I saw the 80-90% stat, too...
I will try to find the source.
**Could not find a 80-90% source...but I did find this. Which is pretty high.

Here is a source citing 63% attack rate. This is an estimate based on the current vaccination campaign. This article is dated October 15, 2009 - so it is recent.

We use data on confirmed cases of pandemic influenza A(H1N1), disseminated by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(US CDC), to fit the parameters of a seasonally forced Susceptible, Infective, Recovered (SIR) model. We use the resulting model to predict the course of the H1N1 influenza pandemic in autumn 2009, and we assess the efficacy of the planned CDC H1N1 vaccination campaign. The model predicts that there will be a significant wave in autumn, with 63% of the population being infected, and that this wave will peak so early that the planned CDC vaccination campaign will likely not have a large effect on the total number of people ultimately infected by the pandemic H1N1 influenza virus.

Here are the CDC maps:

First map is from the week ending October 10, 2009. It shows widespread infection in 41 states.

Here is the map from this exact week last year (both Week #40). Shows nearly 0 flu at all...Most states reporting nothing and some reporting sporadic cases...and certainly no states reporting widespread flu.

For another comparison - this is the map I could find of the WORST week reported last year...where the country had lots of states reporting widespread illness. But this was in the height of flu season and it was still not considered widespread in most of the country.

These pictures help me put this flu season into perspective a little. Thank God it is mild for most people. Prayers for those people that have had a hard time with it.

Thanks for sharing those maps - very interesting..

I'm not surprised to learn that the percentage of people who get this H1N1 flu will be quite high by the time the flu "shots" arrive because it's already so widespread thoughout the country and still no vaccines readily available..:headache: Frustrating for sure..

I had it today. Mild soreness in my arm from the injection, otherwise I'm fine.

I watched 60 minutes last night which featured a segment on H1N1 and the numbers were a lot higher than expected.

If I remember correctly the head of the CDC said that in past years the flu had killed less than 10 people by this time of the year. This year the H1N1 has already taken the lives of over 800.

One of the things they showed was how far the H1N1 was airborne to infect others, the range is 10 feet. That is why everyone one on both football teams contracted the H1N1 from that one striken boy who is now fighting for his life.

As soon as it is available I will be getting this vaccine.

I taped that but haven't watched it yet.. I know I probably should, but it's unsettling when the H1N1 vaccine still isn't available in our area and no one seems to know when it WILL be..:sad2:

I hear you and I totally agree! It scares me and I don't scare that easily.

We want to get our 20 month old DD vaccinated, but can't because there is no injectable vaccine available in our area. They don't expect it until late Nov. which means that she won't have full immunity until late Dec. I'm interested to hear people's experiences with getting the vaccine too.

If you're judging the availability of the H1N1 vaccine by if your county government or health dept has it, don't. My area is on the waiting list but I called a local clinic and went in Sunday morning to get the shots. They are the ones with mercury though. I wanted DS to get a mercury free shot but they didn't have any.

I hope we weren't too late. DS woke up this morning with a sore throat and headache (just talked to him, says he's feeling better, fingers crossed). Also since it was one of those Solantic clinics there were lots of sick people there. Hope we didn't catch something waiting to be vaccinated. :sad2:

So call around. Don't just count on your doctors office or the county to get them in.

Yea it is an injectable one..I know my asthma kids can't get the mist....I don't balk when I get my kids the flu shot..I don't know what is making me pause like this with the swine flu shot....

I think I am going to get it for him though..the thought of getting on a plane in two weeks and having him contract it somehow is killing me..I cannot get it for my other kids though:mad: These particular vaccines are only going to pregnant women and children 5-24 with underlying conditions...

I also don't understand why it's unavailable..Did they not make enough? I don't understand of shipping it in after everyone is sick. My state hasn't been hit hard yet..why not vaccinate the people so they don't get hit and then they don't spread it??

Maybe I spoke to soon. He is coughing, snotty and is running a low temp.

I was wondering myself.

Again, CowboyCO, PLEASE tell us where your doctor brother heard this. It is a lie, so I don't think it should be spread on a message board.

He was on a conference call with the CDC as a member of his county health board. According to him, there have already likely been hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions of cases of swine flu, but most go untested to confirm. Since most insurance will not pay for the test, and since the nasal swab test only shows type A influenza, and not specifically swine flu, a vast majority of cases will go unreported as swine flu and only get counted as a "flu-like" virus.

For example, our local High School recently announced that there have been zero confirmed cases of swine flu. Why? Because they are not testing for it. But this week they had over 15% absentee rate. Another reason is because for most people, the symptoms are fairly mild. Just low-grade fever, cough and aches for 3-4 days and then it's over, so they never seek medical care. It's like a bad cold with fever.

He said it is unlikely that enough of the vaccine will be early enough to prevent a majority of the population from getting it. The entire State of Idaho was granted 45,000 doses (with a population over 1.5 million). His comment to me was "Unless they get the entire population vaccinated, then nearly everybody's going to get it-- and there's no feasible way to vaccinate 300 million people in the next 90 days."

Colorado was supposed to get 188,000 doses (for 4.5 million people) and in actuality, we got 88,000.

Texas got 175,000 doses for 24 million people. And those population figures don't include illegal immigrants. Wyoming got 11,000 doses for 450,000 people.

There is little to no immunity to getting the virus. It is highly contagious and affects healthy people at the same rate as those with pre-existing conditions.

They have enough vaccine to cover only 3.7% of the population(11.5 million doses). That's like putting a band-aid on a sucking chest wound. My son's doctor said that come December, they won't know if they are treating seasonal flu or swine flu and because there won't be much testing- they will never know the real numbers.

Thanks for the Joe Wilsonesque comment, but numbers are numbers. As temperatures drop, schools are back in session, and more and more people stay inside, the transmission rate will continue to increase. Does that mean tons of people will die? No. Some will, but not as many as the seasonal flu will kill. Seasonal flu tends to strike the elderly hardest and for the swine flu, many of the elderly are immune due the last swine flu pandemic in 1957.

The White House predicted back in August that 50% of the population would get it, with up to 90,000 deaths, and now the vaccine is delayed and only available a very small percentage of the population.

This week's reported FLI compared to other years. Look at the red line. It's just getting started...
