Who's been induced? What's it like?

I've been trying to.

I have to go into the hosp tomorrow for an appt because they do something called 'Express Admittance', whatever that means. I know I have to fill out some paperwork and have some blood drawn *shudder* but I'm not even sure what that's all about. Perhaps to see if I'm allergic to the anasthetic or something? Anybody else's hosp do this?

We call it "pre registering" so that when you show up, all the paper work, gathering your insurance information will already be taken care of. We also have your chart already put together before you are even there.

You'll still have to sign a consent for the actual delivery, for the Pit and for the epidural, but we wait until you are in the bed before getting for those signatures.

See, the hosp I'm going to be delivering at does a sort of pre-registering which I've already done. That involved getting a copy of my chart and my insurance info, I think. I don't remember since we did that part waaaaaaaaaay back in oh..Sept or Oct or something once we found o ut which hosp we'd be at. This "Express Admit" is something else, though I suppose I'll find out exactly what that entails when I go in tomorrow after my doc's appt.

Right now, I'm praying for a kind nurse when they do my bloodwork tomorrow because I'm such a hard stick. That and I'm hoping DH will hold my hand and I won't cry.....too much anyway. I hate blood draws.

I'll never forget something one of our nurses told a patient in labor once who was afraid of needles and blood draws; "when you are in labor, needles are your friends!"

One doc I asked (during an epidural lecture DH and I attended) said that if you are freaked out by needles (which I totally am and turned really white when he showed us the length of the epi needle), you need serious therapy. He said needles were nothing to be afraid of. Well of course to him needles are nothing to be afraid of. He was an anasthesiologist for god's sake!

No catheter either birth. Once induced, one not. Both epi's. One worked, one didn't. Good luck with everything......take some playing cards and eat a good meal before going in. They have you on liquids only, if they induce, until the baby comes. For me it was 3 miserable days without food. I am so glad I listened to myself and went out to eat with my parents before going to the hospital to be induced.

I was told that I couldn't eat ANYTHING (except maybe toast and unbuttered, unsalted popcorn or saltine crackers) after 5 pm tomorrow. But prior to that...I am going to have a really nice meal, since DH and I are planning to go out to dinner.

I took a "better birth" course and freaked out when they showed me the epi tube and needle. I was so scared that I tried to do it without an "epi" at first. In the end I gave in, I was in so much pain they could have stuck a railroad spike in my back and I would have cared less.

The "better birth" course was enlightening and I thought it would give me an idea of what to expect, but it was NOTHING like my actual experience.

TOV - I can't wait to hear how your labor goes. I think you will feel the same way. It will be nothing like you are expecting.

I don't want the Squirt to end up with a bruised face (the way DH did) because of being manhandled by a pair of those salad spoons they use sometimes to get the kids out. I'd never heard of the Hoover Babysucker-outer until I read What to Expect. Does that leave a mark on the kid? I've heard that (and I'm s ure this is a myth, but ya never can tell!) if you end having the baby Hoovered ou t with the vacuum sucker-outer thingie, then that kid will be predisposed to having a baldspot where the suctioncup stuck to his noggin.

My daughter had a round red mark on her head, but it was gone within a couple of days.
Also, just FYI it doesn't actually pull the baby out, it just holds the baby in place so she doesn't slide back up the birth canal. I didn't know that until the dr told me when he was about to use it--though by that point if he told me he had to use an actual vacuum I wouldn't have cared. ROFLOL
I hope she doesn't get a bald spot!

This is more for mothers who are NOT being induced. Trust me, if you're in labor, the last thing you want to do is answer a bunch of questions and sign forms!

I was induced with my first. The first day, NOTHING happened! I didn't dilate at all. The second day, I didn't dilate, so around 2PM they opened the Pit drip wide; I went from 0 cm to 10 in less than an hour; THAT was intense! I was in a Naval hospital, and at the time (1983) they only used epidurals for C-Sections. I did it all with one dose of Stadol. (I WANTED a second dose, but it was "too late.") I was doing fine until they "stripped" my membranes.

BTW, have you had much BW done during your pregnancy? I was a "hard draw" but the blood just about jumped out of my arm while I was pregnant!

I was induced with my daughter, my first child. (23 years ago)
My water broke at 2:30AM but labor had to be induced around 6AM as it wasn't happening by itself. The labor itself then lasted about 18 hrs. Compared to my other pregnancies, 2 boys, it was the longest and the only one induced.That could be because it was my first and not because it was induced. One thing I am sure of, it is all worth it in the end.
That baby girl is the one getting married next month at Disney!

I was induced with my first DS, who is 18 today, and IT DIDNT WORK for me I had one contraction, he was almost 3 weeks late, they decided to take him, they estimated his weight between 10 to 12 lbs, he ended up being 10.5. Good luck

I have been induced all 3 times w/our children. It's no big deal. The first one took about 3hrs, 2nd 2hrs and the 3rd one less than 40 min. They start you out slow in the drip and then they up the drip finally when it starts to work it works!! The contractions are very hard though especially on this last pregnancy of mine. Being induced is the way to go.
