whooping cough vacination

Hope i'm posting in the right spot. How many have gotten the whooping cough vacination? DD12 came home and told me lots of kids at her school are sick with coughs. We get our flu shot every year. Should we also get the whooping cough shot? Any side affects? I know with the swine flu there were mixed reveiws. Whats your thought on this one. I live in Ca.

Middle school is about when it wears off which is why when it hits a middle school it goes like wild fire.

Our schools have started requiring it again in 6th grade, so yes mine got it. but I had my DD get the shot in middle school and that was before they made it a requirement.

I would say yes normally and the fact that you live in CA makes me say definitley yes. With the epidemic of whooping cough in california this year, I would definitley get it.

I got mine this year when I got the Tdap vaccine (I'm 21). It really annoys me, especially with whats going on right now, that california universities do not require pertussis vaccine for school. They only require MMR.

i looked at dd's shot records and it looks like she got her last one in 03 but I'll have to check with a nurse. I think i will definietly get it since last year and the year before i got a bad cough and my lungs felt so tight.

Are there any symptoms after the shot like fever or slight cough?

I didnt have any symptoms after the vaccine. My arm was extremely sore but my internist said that was because of the tetnus portion of the vaccine (that is one of the most painful vaccines). From what i've heard, if you just get the pertussis portion of teh vaccine, it doesnt hurt as much.

I just went to a new family doctor and he asked when was the last time I had a tetanus shot, oh about 20 years ago. So he gave me the DTAP since as a child I never had whooping cough or the vaccination.

I just got one on Monday! My arm is a tiny bit sore, but not bad at all.
I had a baby on Sunday, and the hospital gave me the shot before they discharged me. No side effects here!

I am pg, so I am getting it as soon as I deliver (so...in early Dec). DH is (hopefully) getting it this week or next. Both my DSs are current with their DTaP (the P is the pertussis [whooping cough] part of the vax). The adult version is called the TDaP.

Scares me a bit since I'll have a newborn...
