See, I think several people currently in limbo got unreasonably angry at others on this board who were trying to provide some perspective on what this change meant, and didn't mean, regarding DVC membership. Accused us of getting pitchforks, even, or being sycophants for the Mouse. Come on.
They wanted to hear "You're totally justified and Disney lied and misled you about what DVC membership meant, and you have every right to be bitterly angry, without question. You should cancel your pending contract, sell your Disney stock - heck, we ALL should in solidarity, and let's get that class action discrimination suit going. Who's got the "Petrock" tshirts? - STORM THE CASTLE!!!!!!!"
All of which was ridiculous sentiment from the get go.
I get being disappointed, angry even. Totally agree with feeling salty and ill-used. I get feeling like you went from something special to something less so based on the announcement. What I don't get is the shock, or surprise - this has happened before, it will happen again. Nor do I understand the exaggeration of the importance of the perks or the feeling of eternal betrayal for removing them - they've never been part of anyone's contract. You are buying resale, and DVC has already shown a willingness to distinguish that purchase from retail. What's shocking?
I also totally agree that DVC could and should have handled it more delicately, and with more notice for interested parties. It seems that upon reflection, they did, too.
If it's true that all involved really understand what they are buying, there just isn't any place for all the hand-wringing. It's a waste of energy. And the breathlessness about it potentially undermines the value of the product for all of us.
I'm one of those people on the bus or the plane who sing the virtues of DVC. I DO think it's a great value for frequent Disney visitors, even when it disappoints a bit or isn't perfect in it's execution. What I don't do, and what no guide has ever done to me, either, is pretend that it's something it's not. That does a disservice to one of the most honest timeshares I've ever run across. I think that's why I spent any time at all trying to explain the rational side of things, and I still think that side is the one that bears focusing on.
