Whole wheat flour

In an effort to be a bit healthier I've been using whole wheat flour. Almost out and have been watching sales/coupons and the sales/coupons never seem to include the whole wheat flour. Does it ever go on sale?
 
Yes, though I can't remember when I've seen my favorite - King Arthur White Whole Wheat on sale. Flour should be on sale soon for Christmas baking.

We have a Job Lots near us and they occasionally put Bob's Red Mill flours on coupon. That makes them pretty inexpensive. If you have a big freezer, you can buy extra bags and just freeze them. I put my extra flour in giant Ziploc bags to keep any stray flavors away.

The King Arthur flour is the only one my local grocery store carries. (They have a display of Bob's Red Mill items, but no ww flour.)

The King Arthur (all varieties) was on sale before Thanksgiving and there was also a $1 store coupon, so I got a few bags for $1.99 each. I think the regular price is $4.99. It's hard for me to spend that.

I think I saw that it was on sale again this week for $2.99 (no coupon though).


They must be sales just for the holidays because I have never seen it on sale before (the store just opened this spring).
 

I get mine from Trader Joes- cheapest I've found.

Speaking of Whole Wheat Flour... I found some whole wheat flour cookie recipes I want to try soon-

WHOLE WHEAT OATMEAL COOKIES
1 c. wheat flour
1 1/4 c. quick oats
1/2 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 c. butter
1 c. sugar
1 egg, beaten
1/4 c. milk
1/2 c. raisins
1/2 c. nuts
Combine dry ingredients. Cream sugar and butter. Add eggs and milk. Combine all ingredients. Add raisins and nuts. Drop by teaspoon on cookie sheet. Bake 10 to 12 minutes at 350 degrees.




WHOLE WHEAT SUGAR COOKIES
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 c. butter, softened
2 tbsp. milk
1 tbsp. grated orange peel
1 tsp. vanilla
1 egg
2 c. whole wheat flour
2 tbsp. sugar
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In large bowl combine first 10 ingredients; blend well. (Lightly spoon flour into measuring cup; level off.) Stir in flour. Combine sugar and cinnamon.
Shape dough into 1-inch balls; roll in cinnamon-sugar mixture. Place on ungreased cookie sheets, 2 inches apart; flatten slightly. Bake 8- 10 minutes until light golden brown. (Cookies will be soft in center.) Yield 2-3 dozen cookies.




WHOLE WHEAT APPLE COOKIES
1/2 c. butter
2/3 c. honey
1 tbsp. molasses
1 egg
1/4 c. apple juice
1 c. apples, chopped
2 1/2 c. whole wheat flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/4 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 c. raisins
1 c. pecans, chopped
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Cream together butter, honey and molasses. Add egg and apple juice, beat well. Beat in apples. Gradually add in flour, salt and spices, beating well. Fold in raisins and nuts. Bake on greased cookie sheets for 15 to 20 minutes. Do not overbake. Makes 6 dozen



WHEAT FLOUR CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES
1/2 c. butter
3/4 c. brown sugar
3/4 c. white sugar (maybe sub honey or agave??)
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vanilla
3 eggs
3 c. flour
3/4 c. walnuts (optional)
1 1/2 c. chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Mix butter, brown sugar, white sugar, vanilla and eggs. Add soda and flour. Stir in nuts and chips. Bake 12 minutes.
 
Simply using an airtight container isn't effective as eggs are typically in the flour when it's milled and packaged. If you're easily nauseated, never look at FDA packaging and manufacturing standards... :scared1:

Freezing your flour for 24-48 hours when you purchase it THEN putting it into an airtight container will break the lifecycle of the eggs and keep weevils from hatching.
