Who Wants To Be a Millionaire - Walk In and Win Week

I made it out there - but did not get make it through the raffle. It was freezing and a lot of sitting around for nothing, but worth it for the chance.

I'll be back next time for sure.

Good luck to all who made it through the first hurdle

I am participating in the AOL IM Ask The Audience lifeline and it doesn't appear that some of the WIAW Hot Seat contestants are doing very well. The AOL lifeline IMs I have received while online today have been VERY easy,VERY early questions.Hopefully this is not an indicator of how far the contestants are going. :)

I have had to be off phone and computer all day so I am just now checking in.

I am so sorry that it appears that none of my DIs friends made it all the way. So close, Lady. It must be heartbreaking but better luck next time. Now, you know more of the process and next time will be even easier.

I did not get called by my people who were going to attempt the show so I am assuming they did not get chosen. Since they did not explain it all to me I stayed home and off all phone lines just in case. My 8 year old grandson was looking forward to helping and believe me, he could!!

Two people I know from another board did make it to the audience and are now being subjected to watching contestants who, as WEDWDW mentioned, are burning Ask the Audience lifelines on early and easy questions.

I had been wondering how things were going with your friends, SlightlyGoofy. Sounds like they didn't make out any better than mine. Tomorrow ends the taping for this season I think. Hope the people we know get on next season.

Hi Rob

If I had known that the weather was going to be so great for this time of year (I do not drive in bad weather) I might have gone for it myself.

I heard from one person that I was on hold for but they did not even make the audience. Still waiting to hear from the other. I was told I only had to be available yesterday. I even refused to take calls from grandkids yesterday. The poor dears are still in shock. One called last night and talked for about two hours so I guess he wanted to make sure that granny still loved him. LOL

While I am still rooting for my DIS buddies I think you and I, Rob, should be in line next year. We could even share a ride. LOL Playing for money sounds a whole bunch easier than playing for the cruise. There is still no time limit on answers?? Walking away with $32-64K is a whole lot better than the same amount of points too.

Next year Rob??

Yes, Walk In and Win shows were all taped yesterday. They are taping today as well, but the contestants that will tape today were contacted prior to yesterday.

As will be evidenced at 8 pm tonight on GSN, I'm quite ineligible to participate. So, as much as I would love to be on the show again, it isn't going to happen. Instead, I'll undoubtedly be waiting by the phone for several people again. Maybe next year that will include you.

No specific time limit, correct. However, if the producers feel you are taking too long they will stop production and warn you that you need to give your answer or risk being disqualified. You still should have plenty of time.

With the changes to the money tree in the last couple of years, better make that $25-$50K.

Hi Rob

I was distracted and missed the first part of your appearance but I did catch your appearance on Millionaire. You looked much as I had thought you would and remembered the appearance from the original show. How long as it been since you were on? You were much calmer than I am.

LOL on the winning amounts. I play a computer version of the game and it has the old amounts. I do not have time to actually watch the show anymore. I have a retired husband and he watches hours and hours of it but I have painting, wallpapering, yardwork, housework, grandkids to watch and the tutoring I do along with many other duties. I am looking forward to retirement but fear it will only happen when they slam the casket shut. :teeth:

Surely they must have some sort of time limit as they could not be subjective in telling people to hurry up and answer as some would get more time than others and cry foul. Thinking too much can foul you up as much as answering too quickly IMO.

I am going to practice differently and instead of just doing it all on the computer I am going to start saying the answer and FA out loud so I can get into the cadence of the game. If I should be lucky enough to ever get on I will be sure to ask if you would be one of my lifelines. I will need all the help I can get.

The show originally aired on July 19, 2001. I was 35 at the time. As for being calm, I was far from it, at least initially. I didn't really calm down much until about the 16K question. A couple of the early questions, the 1K Matrix question and 2K Turkey trussing question really rattled me and that led to me burn a lifeline too early on the 4K White House burning question which I knew before the choices came up. You see, at that time, I hadn't seen "The Matrix" and I'd not heard of trussing a turkey, but I had seen the movie trailers and did know that truss meant tie so finally got enough courage to go with the most obvious answers.

Funny how everyone thinks I was calm though. After the show originally aired, people would come up to my wife and I and talk about how calm I was and how nervous she looked while sitting in the audience. LOL

Yes, the syndicated show now has different dollar amounts. The 32K has been replaced with 25K, the 64K is now 50K, and the 125K is now 100K. Otherwise, the amounts are the same. The other difference is that if you successfully answer the 25K question, you now get an additional lifeline. It allows you to switch any one question above that level. It most often gets burned on the 50K question. Oh, one other difference, the highest dollar amounts are now payed as annuities instead of a lump sum.

Yes, there is some time limit, but it is somewhat subjective based on what the contestant is doing. If it appears that they are thinking it out, particularly if they are talking through it, then they are allowed a bit more time I think then someone who is just sitting there with a blank expression. I think they allow at least 5 minutes before getting worked up though. In the old days, some contestants took over 45 minutes to give an answer. In my case, it just felt like I was taking that long. I'm certain from what others have told me that I answered quite quickly overall.

Speaking of Final Answer, despite the editing which sometimes doesn't show it, the contestant must say Final Answer after each and every question. On the lower level questions, you often don't see that on the show.

I hope next year WIAW proves much more fruitful for the people on the DIS. This year the random draw worked against most of them. I guess that is to be expected when they draw only 320 numbers out of 1000 or so in line.

Hi Rob, been following this thread and caught you on the show last night. You still did well considering how many bomb out at lower $ amounts!

Maybe next year I'll try to get to the WIAW. Thought about it this year but just couldn't budget it. But enjoyed the thread and posts!

BTW, I'm winner 97 (10/04). Got back in the hot seat 11/05 and got to 250k. It's always fun game.

Thanks hightown! As you may have read in other posts of mine, that was my very first Hot Seat attempt. I wish that I had went to Play It! first to get in a practice run. I think I would have done better that way.

I was aware of you being a million point winner from some of your posts. We should start putting together a list of all the winners that we can. I probably know about 6 or so either personally or from the web.

You should try for WIAW next year if it is possible for you to do it. I can certainly understand the monetary conerns though. Best thing to do is plan a vacation that coincides with WIAW and then spend the day at it. That way, if you don't make the random draw, you aren't out all that money just for Millionaire.

Hi Rob

320 out of 1,000 seem like awfully good odds to me. Much better than trying to get on any other way maybe. I would not even consider going to NYC to try it anyway.

I am somewhat of a character and I am a woman which I understand helps a bit when getting on one of these shows so maybe I would have a better chance. One thing for sure I stand out in a crowd and people remember me. :rotfl2:

I do not have delusions of making it to a million dollars but winning enough to pay for the next car or whatever is nothing to sneeze at. I can get to that level all of the time IF they do not ask a boy band question. :rotfl:

Might you not try for Jeopardy or some other show now that your exclusion period is over? If so, let us know and we will root you on.

Just for the chance to meet Lady it would be worth the trip next January. Here is hoping for some good weather.

That's 320 out of 1,000 to get in the audience and then about 10 out of 320 to get in the Hot Seat, but yes decent odds considering.

That could very well work for you. Of course, being that memorable could work against you if for some reason they don't like you, but hopefully that wouldn't be the case. I do believe that has happened to a few other people that I know. And yes, being female does help, if for no other reason than the math. More men try out and they try to have the same number of women as men get chosen to be on the show.

Yes, well worth the trip, even though she and I haven't techincally met face to face. We each saw the other in the Hot Seat at Play It! in September, but we didn't start talking on the DIS until after we returned.

Well, I didn't make it past the random draw either, but it sure was fun trying. It was very, very cold!

One interesting note ... out of the 320 randomly selected, I saw about 10 returning to their seats very shortly after being selected; they'd been disqualified for paperwork reasons (either didn't have the right docs or had a conflict with someone employed by the show, WDW, etc). I see from Rob's post that another DIS apparently fell into the same problem. That should have reduced the odds of being selected from the 320 even further ...

So I'll try again next year, but definately will have exactly the documents they request!

After the random raffle, they held another raffle for Disney prizes - about 50 or 60 people won.

LOL, Rob. I will tone it down a bit before attempting a run at the Walk in and Win. I am a large woman which attracts attention (I have lost 80 some pounds so far) but my hobbies and interests seem to be memorable.

I remember that they had a WIAW last year about the same time as this one. Might you happen to know how many years they have had this AND if early in the year is the only time they have these shows? I could easily add an extra vacation to our plans as it would be much cheaper than going to NYC to try out.

I will copy off the best hints from this thread and see if I can learn any new tricks. LOL

Is there a website for game players like yourself so you can find out what is available? I have had friends try out and get onto Jeopardy. It is far too hard for me though. I have a brain that remembers what it wants and so I have a somewhat limited area of expertise and a much broader base of knowledge is required for Jeopardy.

If it is meant to be it will be. Worth a try.

I believe that this is the 3rd January in a row that they have done this. I know for certain it is at least the second as I sat by the phone in both 2005 and 2006.

There is a message board that I have frequented in the past and I still visit periodically. It is primarily for WWTBAM contestants and wannabes, but several of the posters there have been on Jeopardy!, Wheel of Fortune, or other gameshows. The posters there sometimes alert their members as to audition opportunities for current gameshows and even occasionally new shows that haven't even started taping yet.

I think my memory is a bit less suited for Jeopardy! than Millionaire, but I'm certainly willing to continue trying.

Rob

But at least I got a free pencil! ;)

I did have a really good time going out for Walk In and Win, even though my paperwork refused to cooperate. *sigh*

I met some very fun people, had a good time and a heck of a lot of caffeine, and still had a great vacation on top of everything else, so, almost no regrets. Okay, I *seriously* regret not double checking my pay stub before leaving the house, but other than that, it was fun. I know for a fact that it had my Social Security number on it up until fairly recently, but I spaced out and didn't check.

Where I am really kicking myself is that before I left, I *did* pull out my card and thought about bringing it, but I've had a problem with my SS number being used inappropriately after my wallet was stolen some years back, so I've been trained, for good or ill, not to ever carry the card with me. (Some rules, apparently, need to be broken now and then.)

The best laid plans of mice and men, right?

Hopefully, I will not need to have better luck next year because I'll definitely be trying out again when they start taping the new season. But, if that doesn't work out, there's nothing wrong with a nice January trip to WDW. :)

Thanks to all of you for the support, especially Rob and SlightlyGoofy for being in my corner every step of the way.

And now, to unpack. :)

Just wanted to pop in and give a big THANK YOU to WWTBAM Rob for all of his help.

Despite the fact that my hubby and I left our house at 1:30 AM to drive to Orlando and arrived at 4 AM-ish, we did not make the random draw. Bummer. We will definitely do this again next year, though. The experience was a lot of fun and we met some really great people.

Looking forward to some better luck in 2007!

ladysoleil and MillionaireAddict,

You are both very welcome. I'm just sorry that it didn't work out for either of you this time around. Hopefully it just gives your more time to prepare and you'll try again at the next earliest opportunity.

Oh, you can't keep a good girl down. Or a bad one, either. ;)

If it's meant, it'll be. I am nothing if not persistent, no worries.
