Who Wants/needs Turn Down Service?

We live in rural Missouri, definitely not high-falutin'!- and we love the turndown service!! As everyone has stated, when you come back from dinner or the parks and your room is neat and fresh, your lights are on low, and curtains drawn, it just seems more homey. I really like the curtains drawn, usually when we leave it is daylight, and we come back after dark. It's nice not to feel on display until you can get to the window. I know, we could draw the curtains ourselves, but forget to!

If turndown service is interrupting an intimate moment then I am assuming you don't have kids with you. If it is really that much of an annoyance tape a note to the door the says "No turndown service required. Thanks".

Loved it at the WL!!! we did request it (no big deal). Since we usually nap and shower before dinner, our room looks pretty much like it does in the morning when we leave for the parks! It's nice to have the beds fixed (and the chocolate), fresh towels,etc. I plan on requesting it at the BC!!

I love the turndown service. We take a break and shower in the middle of the day and it is always nice to get fresh towels. We just got back form a cruise and they did the turndown while we were at dinner.

It seems that most of the people here who like turn down service are gone while that service is being done. They enjoy coming back to a freshened-up room. Well, probably they went in the Summer when the parks were opened late. We were there in Jan (2003), and the parks close early, plus it was raining. Its one thing to come back to a freshened up room, another to have your privacy interrupted by housekeeping. You feel like you're in the way, but since we were already in our nightclothes we didn't feel like getting dressed to leave. Nothing we did seemed to work to convey to housekeeping that we didn't wish to be disturbed. Have you ever tried using a "do not disturb" dign? They don't knock on your door, but they go to another, vacant room and call you to see if you want housekeeping. Still an interruption if you're taking a nap, retired early, or, having an "intimate moment". (Its quite legal, BTW, between married couples). We told the front desk repeatedly that we didn't want turn down service, however, like I said, that information somehow didn't get conveyed to the housekeepers. Perhaps the suggestion to tape a note to the door that we don't want housekeeping would work. However, you're assuming they can read, and read English! No, I'm not trying to put down someone just trying to earn an honest living, however, its been my experience more often than not that housekeeping doesn't speak English, or at least very well. To come back to a freshened up room sounds like a nice service, however, it seemed like I was always in the room when they came.

How is the turndown service at AKL? We aren't staying concierge this time, so we'll have to request it. Do you have to request it every morning or can you request once for the whole stay? Any candy?

vhoffman....I agree with you completely. I have had maids knocking on my door to do turn down service at very inopertune times....in the middle of very "romantic" moments. And some (those that did not speak good English) sometimes would keep knocking, or not understand what we were saying...you know like "Go away, already"

Count me in as another person who enjoys the turndown service. As far as not wanting to be interrupted if we are in the room...well, we always put out the do not disturb sign and just take the phone off of the hook. It isn't like any important call is going to come through the phone in the room, since everyone calls us on our cell phone(smile). Plus even if the phone is off of the hook, the voice mail will still work and you can check messages later on.

I'm another one with young ones and diapers that LOVES turndown service. We would leave early in the morning, come back to a clean room for a nap/rest, go back out for dinner and back home early to fresh towels, empty trash and chocolates. We were never in the room when they did turndown and we were there in January.

I have no real opinion about turndown service--I've stayed at all 3 levels of resorts also. Chocolate is always good so that can be a deciding factor!

What concerns me is the clean towels multiple times a day many have posted about. Granted I am not a pool user and am not traveling with children so that may factor into my opinion, but isn't this a little wasteful of our resources? Sorry, don't mean to Jiminy Cricket you or be the "Green Police." I don't mind reusing a towel. I am not saying that getting 2 sets of towels a day makes you a bad person, just giving a different viewpoint.

I have never had turn down service, but tend to be the type who would do anything for chocolate... I think I would like it only if it was handled while I was gone. We have DVC now, and I LOVE that we don't deal with housekeeping on a regular basis. I don't worry about getting out of their way, and I am the type to straighten up the room myself anyhow.

Well, not to get into a debate, as this is the resort board, but reusing towels at home is a lot different than reusing a towel in a resort, IMO. They are never dry by the time we want to take another shower/wash hair/freshen up, and with them all being white, it's a little difficult to tell which one was "your towel." Sorry, but I don't like to use a towel one of my teenagers has used - uh, not sure what parts were dried!!

I guess the same argument could be made for taking another shower (wasting resources), but when it's warm out and we've been sweating, we need to clean up before heading out for the evening.

P.S. It wasn't always summertime when we had turndown service.

Ok....now, that I'm somewhat composed, I can tell you this....
I LOVE Turndown service !
I don't NEED it, but it's a nice thing to have on vacation!

I guess DH and I know how to "time" the towel and turndown thingie, so we're never bothered by a maid.
but, a new set of fresh towels, and sometimes a remaking of your bed, plus the chocolates are just that touch of pampering I do love.....even on a business trip!

JMHO.......BTW, k&a&c'smom....your post caused a tad bit of cola getting sprayed all over my monitor!

Call the Housekeeping Manager and let her/him know you do not wish Turn Down service. Calling the Front Desk is not going to accomplish getting it stopped.

I wouldn't EVEN think of eating the chocolate from that service.

Wonder which way they'd hang the toilet paper? Over or under? There was a long-term debate about that in Ann Landers column a while ago....Instead of chocolates, maybe they'll give you Inmodium if you call too often!
