Dread the thought of having to write checks again for each retail purchase:worship: but I will once my bank starts charging monthly fee to use my debit card:sad2: some banks already have started with the fee so figure is just a matter of time before all do:confused3

When our Credit Union started doing this... we just told the store to run it as a credit card... the money still comes directly out of your account but no fee. :thumbsup2

It does take longer when you present a paper check at the grocery. The cashier then needs to see your ID, they generally make notations on the check in pen. I don't understand why you can't switch to a debit card. Just put the DC inside your paper check register if you are so anal and need to write down every transaction as soon as it occurs. Another option is to go to a monthly envelope system. Put the beginning balance at the top then just subtract the DC transaction from the number and place the receipt inside the envelope. I guess I am more advanced and keep a receipt envelope in my purse then on the weekend I enter all the amounts in budget spreadsheet.

I don't think it is can't in my case it is I don't want to.

I rarely write cheques nowadays just for things that cannot be paid any other way. However, they are threatening to do away with them completely here in the UK and that would be a nightmare. I shop once a week for a 92 year old and get her cash at the same time (I use my debit card and withdraw it from my account). I then take the shopping and cash to her and stay for a cup of tea and a chat and she gives me a cheque for the total of the shopping and the cash - I really cannot see any way round this if there are no cheques. BTW she cannot really go out now so cannot withdraw cash for herself.

Well, if you insist on writing checks for everything, please be respectful of those behind you. Have your check written out, ID ready and record the entry when you get in the car. It is disrespectful to waste others time when the banks have given you a safe and easy way to do transactions.

For those whining about debit fees, just run it as a credit and sign and go!

I know I'm in for a long wait in the grocery store when I get behind someone who uses reusable bags and writes a check. It's always 65+ yr old women too. Both take so much longer.

Funny, I always get stuck behind the old ladies who use cash and want to give them exact change, so they go through their coin purse one coin at a time, trying to look hard at it to know what kind of coin it is....and does that for every single coin....:headache:

One place I still have to write a check that I haven't seen mentioned is church. I write a check every week for offering. I guess I could write one for the month but there is something about the weekly offering I stick to.

Otherwise, check to trash pick-up service and medical bills. Most everything else is either debit on online banking and bill pay.

Our bank has a "Virtual Wallet" account but you are charged for any check over 3 per month so I would go over on church alone.

They've been threatening for a while; I think it'd be a long phase-out regardless and they may come up with some interim thing to transiton people, or just start charging a processing fee for cheques which would cause most people to switch and then just deal with the stragglers.

However, if it seemed like it was coming up, you could discuss it with her and she could order a bank card (assuming she doesn't have one). You could show her a receipt from your transactions and a statement or what have you to show she'd know exactly what you did with the card and you could take it to do the shopping or take it to just get cash for her, do the shopping with the cash and bring her the receipts. She obviously has a relationship and trusts you.

Mermaid02 - do you mean you still have checks with carbon paper underneath, that make an automatic copy? Those haven't been available from my bank for years. Heck, my bank even charges extra to send me the cancelled cheques... they just scan them and make the images available online.
No carbon paper here, but we still have the checks that make duplicates, too. Most people in my area use them. They're great.

That was rude.

If you have so little self control and run your balance so close to the overdraft line that you can only keep track by immediately needing to record a check in a paper register and hold up a line of people in the grocery you probably don't have very good math skills. I keep track of my finanaces online and before going out I check my balance in my electronic register at home and know about how much is there. I don't hold up a line of people while on a shopping trip by painfully writing a check and then writing in an ancient check register. Hold onto your debit receipts and subtract them when you get home rather than being selfish by holding up everyone else.:rolleyes1
If you have so little self control that you cannot allow yourself enough time in the grocery store not to freak out about someone taking 30 seconds to write a check or record it in their register, then you probably don't have very good time manangement skills.

Are you serious? I didn't get the memo that the world revolved around you and the way you do things. Hopefully if you're behind me in line you will somehow get that 60 seconds back.

My self control and time management skills have nothing do with this siutation. It is rude of a person who intentionally uses a method that wastes everyone's time. You waste the time of those behind you, the cashier who must process it, the store owner who now has to go to the bank and deposit, the bank employee who must handle it, etc. Debits work and are much more efficient. If you want to be inefficient do it on your own time, not mine.

Most people these days have very little free time and I don't appreciate when someone decides that they want to take valuable resources from others because they refuse to use a proven efficient method. :confused3

Just because you don't value your time, doesn't mean that I don't value mine. Since you seem to have so much free time to waste, maybe you could research how a debit card works and understand that it is safe and efficient. It is also cheaper and wastes less resources.

You saw the light that motorized vehicles are more efficient than a horse buggy, why can't you see the benefits of the debit card?

I don't see the benefits, because it's not safe. After having my card cancelled twice in six months because the numbers showed up on lists of stolen info (both from large, national corporations having their systems hacked and information stolen) and the bank manager who called to tell me the second time explaining that this is so common, his entire job is now down to getting the list from the feds of compromised numbers in the morning and calling customers to tell them their accts. have been compromised all day (and dealing with the ones who were not just on a list but actually used before the feds/bank caught it), I don't use my debit card for anything but the bank's ATM.

Yes, if the number is stolen and used your money will likely be returned - and it will take days and days and lots of paperwork. The bank guy also told me that he's seen people have multiple accounts drained because some criminals can get to linked accounts, or steal identity info., it depends on what data was stolen and from where. He, who works for the bank that collects the fees on those transactions, told me to use a credit card, cash or checks because it's not safe to use your debit like that. To each his or her own, I'm just saying that it's safe, use it, is not necessarily the case.

The cashier is being paid by the store owner, if the store owner wishes to accept checks as a form of payment, it is not a waste of the cashiers time... the bank accepts the checks- it is part of the services they offer- again, not a waste of their time.... the store owner WANTS the money from the customer so he accepts their checks, not a waste of his time or he would NOT accept the checks.... as far as wasting the time of the person behind me- they are more than welcome to shop online and avoid lines EVERYWHERE.

I pay the school and Dr.'s with checks. The rest are online.

Our church has automatic withdrawal from bank accounts...:thumbsup2

I rarely write checks; most places around here won't even take them anymore. However, if the proposed debit card changes go into effect I will most likely end up using checks again, at least at the places that allow them.

I don't like carrying cash around with me since I have a tendency to spend it faster and lose it easily.

As for not being able to track debit transactions like a check in your ledger..uh why is a debit card harder than a check? Just like a check write your transaction in the ledger if written records are your preferences. There are also tons of online tools and the ability to access banking online 24/7 to track you balances.

There is no question, debit transactions are just a little harder to track, because you have to remember to write in the transaction in your checkbook register when you get home. With a check, I always wrote it in as I wrote the check. And I always knew what my balance was. With a debit card, for those of us who live paycheck to paycheck, there is a greater risk of overdrafts with a debit card if you aren't careful.
Looking at my checkbook register, I write about 7 checks a month, and about 17 debit/online transactions a month. My regular checks are when Schwans , AT&T, which I used to pay online, but they changed their online payment system, and I have been so far (in 4 months) been unsuccesful in obtaining a new log in, our water company, which has no online payment system, my auto mechanic who is a 1 man operation.
I pay cash for gasoline, because the gas stations around here with the best prices don't take credit cards, and they charge 45 cents per debit card transaction....which galls me. When I've just put $90 worth of gas in my Suburban, why are you charging me 45 cents for the privledge of having my money go directly from my bank account to yours?

Now my mom, she's 88. She did the debit card thing for about a year and then cut it up and had the bank deactive it. She expects her Senior Discount, and on big ticket items, a discount for paying cash! She had a new roof put on her house and all the estimators made a big deal that they took credit cards and could finance the cost. She wanted none of that, she wanted to know how much of a Senior Discount they gave, and how much of a discount they gave if she paid cash. Lowest bid was $15,000, and they gave a 10% senior discount, and a $500 flat discount if you paid cash, so final cost was $13,000.

I always use my credit card and we pay off the balance monthly. Everything else is paid for using electronic funds transfers.
