who read the book My Sister's Keeper?

Just saw the movie. I enjoyed it but had not read the book. DD had read the book and was extremely disappointed that the ending was "REALLY wrong."

LOL! I never saw it but my sister said the same thing!

I read that originally Dakota and Elle Fanning were cast as the sisters and that is why Cameron Diaz was the mom- Elle is like, what 9 or 10, so they had to make mom younger. Then I heard Dakota refused to wear the bald wig so they were replaced with the current cast.

If that is true, I will have lost all respect for her. I didn't like losing my hair to cancer as a teenage girl, but I had no choice. Wow.
I haven't read the book, but I'm going to see the movie next week. I'm looking forward to it but it's going to be very, very hard for me.

I read the book and saw the movie last night. It was very different, including the end. For those who are curious, I have put the major differences in white:

-Jesse is not an arsonist or really much of a delinquent at all
-Brian does not sleep in the firehouse
-Julia is completely cut out
-Kate has a rather dramatic suicide scene
-It is Jesse who tells that Kate put Anna up to it
-The court case is actually hardly mentioned at all, it seems like an afterthought
-Anna's personality seems very different, she does not play hockey, polish his doorknobs, etc.
-The whole service dog thing is very underdeveloped. You only hear him quip about it once.
-The huge dramatic beach scene was added.

And here's the biggest (the ending)
-KATE dies in the end and Campbell brings the verdict by after her death.

The movie was okay. They tried way too hard to make an "artsy" movie and the songs really took away from it. People were laughing at the lyrics in places that were suposed to be somber and htere were way to many montages. The movie jumped around only barely following the book and at times you couldn't tell easily if you were in the present or the past. Reading the book definitely helped because you knew what to expect, although I was rather disappointed that I geared myself up for certain things that did not happen.

The movie was okay but by no means a good movie, or even a good movie based on a book. The one thing I will give it is its unflinching look at a family in crisis and what it's like to go through an illness like that. I can't think of a single movie that has shown such a raw portrayal on screen, and it's something a lot of families may be able to identify with.

She didn't refuse to wear a bald cap, she refused to outright shave her head. I can understand that. A girl's hair is a big part of her identity. Many young women with cancer will choose to wear wigs in public because of this. I was surprised they would have required her to shave her head instead of allowing her to wear a bald cap instead. Remember though, this is purely rumor and speculation. I have not heard for sure one way or another. It could also have been that she didn't like the script or had other projects that interfered with filming. Nobody knows for sure why she did or did not do the project.

For those who were fans of the book, you might be interested in this quote from Rotten Tomatoes:

This book hasn’t been adapted, it’s been taken outside and shot.

For what it's worth, I like the ending in the movie better in that it simply makes more sense, but I hated all the other changes.

My 3 DD's & I just got back from seeing the movie. We all read the book, but quite a while ago. As Eeyore's Butterfly stated, there were many differences from the book, but that is always the case when a book is turned into a screenplay.

Also like Eeyore's Butterfly, I thought the ending was more believable, but definitely not as shocking as the book.

I enjoyed the movie & I did enjoy the music, but I "hear" what you're (Eeyore's Butterfly) about people laughing during some of it - maybe reading or not reading the book made people react differently. :confused3

I actually thought Cameron Diaz played a good role. In fact, my oldest DD said she just couldn't see her in this role, but was surprised by how well she did. The actress who played Kate did an outstanding job, as did Abbigail Brezlin as Anna.

It's definitely not an uplifting movie, (bring the tissues) but, like the book, it gives you a lot to think about.

The book was stupid. I read it. Am I allowed to say spoilers, which justify me saying it was stupid? I think the movie was actually better. DMRick, the movie has a different and MUCH BETTER ending!

I read the book about three years ago, and I thought the ending was absolutely absurd and completely undermined the entire point of the book. :confused3 I'm not seeing the movie, just because I thought the book was so ridiculous, but I'm glad the ending was changed.
