Who Likes the Big Hat?

My DBF and I were talking about the big hat in front of the Chinese Theater at MGM, and we were wondering: how many people out there like the hat, and how many people wish the darn thing would go away?

I love the big hat.

Sometimes I wonder if they're making everything specifically for me! With the exception of that nasty pink castle incident some years back, the major structural changes they've made to the parks, like the Sorceror's Hat at Disney-MGM Studios, like the hand above Spaceship Earth at Epcot, and like the gold appointments added to Cinderella's Castle for this year's celebration, have been spot-on imho.

oh heck why dont they move the castle and the tree of life too . if you dont like the hat dont goto that park. it's disney's park. they built it. why tell they how to build it? its been they many years and millions yes millions love the hat. google mgm studios and look at photos and you will see lots of "hat" photos.

My problem with this response, is that the Castle and the Tree of Life (and for matter, Spaceship Earth WITHOUT the hand) were all built into the park upon opening.

I think that's a bit harsh. I believe that folks need to accept that the parks aren't made to conform to their own personal preferences (though, as I mentioned, I feel like they are being made to conform to mine ), but that's a lot different then "if you don't like it don't go." The hat is not the entire park, so folks who don't like the hat can just focus on other aspects of the park and still have a great time.

I never knew MGM before the hat, or SE before the hand (except in pics....) so to me they are just what they are part of Disney...... and I am happy to say I never experienced the PINK castle, but I do/did like the "bling" on the castle.... not so much the mirror thing!

I suspect that is why the Sorceror's Hat was added to Disney-MGM Studios: The image of the Chinese Theater was, in the minds of many, the icon of the theme park (despite Disney trying to get us to accept the water tower to be that icon), yet Disney was prohibited from using that image as the icon of the park in promotional materials. Now, the Sorceror's Hat, an image inextricably linked in people's minds with Disney (and owned by Disney) serves as a great icon for the park:

The first trip to MGM after they 'dropped' the hat in, I was horrified. It just looked so random sitting there. However, now I actually like it. Have no problem with it. But, I also like the 'hand' on SE too. And the 'graveyard' effect at the entrance to Epcot? Nope, no issue with that either. But that horrific mirror on the front of the Castle??? Nope, can't wait for that puppy to be gone and hope never to see it again.

That's it exactly! I have grown to love the icon status of the hat, but it just ruins the beauty of the theater. Move that sucker to another location in the park, tear down the Hunchback stage and stick it there, but don't mess with the view of the theater! Maggie

I agree with you. I like the hat and LOVE the HCOE decorated castle, including the mirror, the hand is great, and the hat is whimsical and fun. The two things I don't like are the birthday cake castle and those ugly gravemarker type things at the FW entrance to Epcot. But it doesn't matter for us because we usually use the International Gateway, and only go there to see the flowers and ride SE.

I'm not keen on Leave a Legacy, but it is pretty harmless, easy to ignore.

The hat is cool, the location is not great. I wish the hat housed a cool attraction, but I like the hat.

Sorcerer mickey/fantasia is one of our fav. elements of disney magic!
Certainly one of the more cerebral offerings, fits in well in a "movie" themed park.
