Who is destashing in 2010?

Wow! Your baby girl's room is so pretty! :lovestruc

It is amazing what you were able to accomplish and so inspiring. You should absolutely be proud of yourself! Congrats on the little one :cutie:

More destashing: all the old magazines( last 4 months) given to our battered women's shelter, old towels to the humane society, 4 bags to consignment and two large baskets of stuff to the garage for the BIG garage sale. Also got rid of a deck firepit on freecycle. Going to list a queen size bed and a dresser. Can't wait to get into the garage and really clean it out. Hubby steam cleaned all the carpets in the house!! Gotta love him!! He goes in streaks. Either great help or no help. I'll take it when ever he offers!! Destashing like crazy!!!

Wow Sherry! Awesome pics, what a huge change & so cute for your DD!

I have not done any decluttering though I did list some items during the ebay free listing days over Memorial Day weekend. I have come to the conclusion that my time would be better spent just donating the stuff & getting past that "I paid for it & want to recoup some money". I don't have the time to list & wait & only 1 thing sold. I'd rather have a clean garage and no more piles of misc. stuff just taking up space.

The kids' rooms are getting a little messy so that'll be on our list this week. DD gets tons of hand me downs so it's tough keeping her clothes organized. The rooms will be ok again once we put stuff back where it belongs & get the unwanted stuff out.

BIL just came for a visit so the basement looks fine & the rest of the house is ok. Paper clutter is my main battle right now. Thanks for continuing to keep this thread going, it inspired me every time!

I have gathered 2 more bags to go, and have an "ebay" pile. The stuff to go will be out by the end of the month, and the stuff to ebay is going up one item at a time. (slow & steady wins the race :))
Hopefully, the ebay stuff will sell & let me add a few more dollars to my Disney fund! (in addition to clearing out my house!)

Paper clutter is my main battle right now. Thanks for continuing to keep this thread going, it inspired me every time!

So true for us too! :sick:Paper clutter is a huge headache. Both my DH and I think we need to keep papers for future reference or just in case. What do most people keep in terms of monthly bills? How far back? A few months or more?

Last summer, I spent a great deal of time shredding all my old paycheck stubs. And I do mean all of them starting with the ones when I was 16 - early 40's. That is a lot of paycheck stubs. I also shredded lots of old checks we had. :cutie: We have been married 23 years and so we had lots of old checks that were cancelled and returned to us. This was before the banks just keep copies on microfish I guess. Anyway, wow! It took a lot of time but I had to shred them since each one had both our SS # on them. Back then, the banks printed your SS on the checks. :confused3 Unbelievable!

I also keep lots of the kids art work and papers from school. :teacher: I intend to take pictures of their art work and scrapbook the pictures then get rid of the actual day to day art work. However, I just don't seem to get around to doing it. So, this is where I am going to start up again.

I tend to go in spurts clearing out stuff. Since I am a teacher, I tend to get rid of more in the summer. Last week, I worked in my DD's room and have three huge bags of clothes and stuffed animals to donate. :woohoo:

Sherry7 - Fantastic Job! :yay: The room looks great! :cloud9:Thanks for sharing your before and after photos. I have a room like your before photo. It is my guest room/office. It is the room that I am concentrating on this summer. I hope to have it fully transformed by the end of summer if not before.

Thanks again to the OP and all the posters for keeping this thread going. :cheer2:It really is a great motivator!

I donated a bag of stuff yesterday. I'm toying with the idea of a yard sale. The last one was not so great. Made money, but people stole from us. :( I said I wouldn't do it again. But here I am thinking about it. It is a good way to get rid of a lot of stuff. What doesn't sell, I'd donate.

Haven't made up my mind about it though.

Well, the destash got a huge kick in the pants yesterday....But I guess I should start at the beginning....

Last Saturday we happened to be at the credit union and decided to ask about a mortgage refi. We have no other debt but thought we'd be unable to refi because we don't have much equity. Banks require something called Private Mortgage Insurance if you have less than 20% equity. We have a condo, and because of the markets right now, PMI companies aren't doing condos. So we thought we were stuck. BUT someone right here on the DIS informed me that their credit union would does mortgages down to just 10% equity with NO PMI. So, we stopped in and asked. Turns out not only could we refi with no PMI, but we could switch from a 30 year to a 15 year mortgage for about $20 a month...but wait, there's more....The credit union will do this all for FREE. Free appraisal, no closing costs, no paying points up front. SIGN US UP.

So yesterday afternoon they call and want to do the appraisal THIS MORNING. I cleaned like a madwoman- it doesn't really make a difference to the appraisal process- just makes me feel better about someone seeing my house. A car load to Goodwill, 3 bags to Freecycle, a ton of boxes to the recycling place.

I've been wondering, since I'm half way through the year, am I half way through destashing? After last night, I think I can say my answer is YES! :cheer2:

The clean out continues.
almost cleaned out my daughter's room( she is moving back in on Monday). I have be putting the odds and ends in there. Now I am emptying all the paperwork ( 2000 tax returns and paperwork) and tons of other stuff. I put memory stuff for my girls in 2 big tubs. Two large boxes of garage sale stuff and 4 big bags to the garbage! Also starting on the garage. finished 3 shelves 4 feet deep and 6 feet long. Many more to go. Will love it when it is done. This weekend is a big push to get a lot done. Going on vacation on Tues. morning.

I am having a friend come over to house tomorrow morning to help me go through some of my stuff. I know my limitations and I hold onto my collectibles. I also have been in habit of keeping things stored in the same places. She is helping me to look at how I store stuff and getting rid of mutiples of the same item

Ohhhh! Such a great thread! I've done my & DH's room, but have yet to tackle the kids. :scared1: We just keep the doors closed and the lights off!

Wow. That is some great news!! I'm really glad for you guys! The DIS rocks doesn't it?! Where else can you find people that you "trust", (seeing them here all the time :) ) and get such solid information?

I'm right with you on cleaning like a madwoman. When I hear someone is coming over, I look at the house through different eyes.

I have been waxing and waning with de-stashing. I do have some big items I would like to donate this weekend. There's a lot going on, so hopefully we can drop them off on the way to or from some events.

Don't forget about recycling instead of throwing some stuff out. Pretty much any metal can go to a recycler - they'll separate out what you have and give you CASH. Old Christmas lights a big one - they're copper and you get top dollar for them.

I had a good week last week.

Cleaned out the kids closet. AND their playroom. That was actually much easier than I thought it would be. Turns out the kiddos are sick of all the 'stuff' laying around too. :thumbsup2

LOL, I guess I need to declutter our master closet. The rod fell today.:scared1: It was brand new house less than 2 years ago and when we moved here I hardly had any clothes I brought with me (I lost 70 pounds before my move).

Can you tell what I have been doing the last 2 years......I enjoy my new shape. ;)

WTG PaulaSue!!! I bet others are enjoying your new shape too. :goodvibes

I could not sleep last night and for lack of anything better to watch at that hour of the morning I watched an entire episode of "Hoarders". Right after it was over I went down the hall and cleared out enough in one closet to fill a Dell computer box, you know big one of those things is? :confused3

The sad thing is that I can probably fill that box a couple times over just from that one closet.

I am a neat hoarder. I never put so much in any closet that the door will not close. Unfortunately I have an awful lot of closets. :rotfl:

Going to have a garage sale this July. Going to stack them deep and sell them cheap.;)

Slightly Goofy

Wow, this thread is going strong!

My great destash is an ongoing thing. I am very excited that next month my parents and their neighbor(s?) will be doing a yard sale and oh my gosh I have so much to contribute! I have a ton of clothes and "get rid of" boxes of stuff at my house and my parents house, so anything that is sellable is going to the yard sale. All the clothes will end up to goodwill anyway, but hey at least the name brand/brand new stuff I might be able to make some money off of, I am SO excited!!

Oooh, just found this thread. We are destashing in a major way. I've been decluttering for a few years, but it didn't seem to make a difference. Now we've decided that we're going to sell our large northern home and move to Florida to be closer to my parents and my ILs. We'll be renting for at least a year, and then plan to buy a smaller home. So out go all the non-essentials!

We had a garage sale, and luckily had the nicest customers and made $300, but for the rest I'm donating it. Easier, and using www.itsdeductible.com I see that we'll get more off our taxes next year than I could ever make doing yard sales.

We only have 1 room completed, but it is so nice to know that the only things in my kitchen are things we love and use all the time!!

i have been working on my house the past few weeks. i went through all my kids toys and such earlier this week and sold alot of them and whatever cant be sold will be donated. we are in the process of making a mater bedroom and as im "packing" all of the things in our tiny bedroom i have thrown out tons of papers and such. i know last year we went though our whole house and took a ton of things to good will! we made about 5-6 trips there with all the stuff we had! i couldnt believe how much stuff we had!

I took a car load of toys and clothes to the kid's consignment store yesterday and today I threw away two bags of old art projects and broken/crappy toys. I still have a ways to go, but I'm making progress! I also went through my closet and found another whole bag of clothes for donating. I'll try to drop those off this weekend as well. It feels good to let this stuff GO!

Well...trying to decide. My Dsis packed for our shared vacation last week using space bags. I'm thinking of buying some...but would that just be side stepping the destashing I ought to be doing? Decisions, Decisions.
