Who is destashing in 2010?

Cleaned off table top and also cleaned off kitchen countertops. Threw out some expired food. Got rid of some of my recipes that I has cut out 'to try later'. Decided if I had not tried them yet then not that important and why hold on to them. Tomorrow I plan to finish in kitchen and move onto the laundry room.

I'm still plugging away. At first it was easy to see progress but now it feels more like a race- trying to get more stuff out of the house than comes back in!

Got through all the closets! I had to go to the dumpster 3 times to throw it all away but it was so worth it. Only have the kitchen and garage to go through.

My neighbors and I had a yard sale this past weekend and I got rid of nearly 75% of the things I wanted to get rid of. The secret is to price things well, if you mark them too high folks will not even ask for a lower one. I ask just a tiny bit more than I really want and am reasonable about things are worth. It is not personal ya know.:goodvibes

I did not make big bucks but got rid of a lot of stuff and did make enough to pay for a couple of days at DW.

The town I live in is having another sale in a couple of weeks, I did not know when we planned this one, so everything left is still set up and ready to go in the garage and I hope to add a bunch more when I get some help this week in getting things from the basement to the garage.

Anything left over then will be parceled out to various charities and such.

I worked on our biggest "catch all" room of the house (the laundry room) all day Sat.. It was a job! I'm still not quite done. Now the job is to maintain it and keep plugging along!

This! I have been doing the same thing, and not just with recipes! If I haven't used it yet, chances are I'm not going to. Good way to look at clutter!

I've just been looking at recipes, too, but I'm not ready to toss them. So, the new rule is I must either toss one or try one, once a week.

I'm subscribing to this thread!! I am in total destash mode. Just completed 2 of three planned family/friend garage sales. DH is selling automotive parts he no longer needs. Next up is my cloth diaper collection and baby stuff. Can't wait to look through the thread for some more motivation!!

I'm still plugging away too! I just feel like I should be done by now! :scared1:
I keep reminding myself that it took years to accumulate this stuff and I have a slight case of hoarders mentality, so it will take a while to get rid of it all. I am compulsive about having all the pieces together when I get rid of something, which quite frankly is a pain in the behind, but it's who I am. :confused3

I was pleased that I gave away quite a few things through Freecycle over the weekend. I have also just about finished clearing and sorting through my back porch area. I don't have a garage, so it kind of replaces that. I also have a good start on preparing for my yard sale, so I'm okay with what I've accomplished. I have three more weeks of summer vacation left, so I'm in hustle mode.

I cleaned out the sheets/linen closet, shoe bin, and all closets. Now I have 3 huge garbage bags to take to the homeless shelter!

We have been taking stuff to the local auction house and using the money for that towards paying off our car loan.

We also just had a yard sale a few weeks ago, and while that money didn't go where we wanted it to go (we had an emergency vet appt for the dog - luckily we barely made enough to cover it - and we wanted to use it towards the car loan) it still worked out okay.

We have another load of stuff at the auction house right now, so fingers crossed that it does okay.

We got rid of the huge entertainment center in the master bedroom (aka : the thorn in my side - that thing was so tall I couldnt' open the window shutters) by giving it away for free. And took the cedar chest from the guest room and am now using that as a tv stand.

So far, so good! Now I just need to remember to take the stuff to the shelter.

Destashing my entire house is my goal BEFORE christmas. I have been thinking about it for months now. Thinking that I need to get a move on it so I can possibly have a rummage sale to start filling my "disney" jar. Also our socks have taken over the laundry room. As I said I have been "thinking" about it for months, but thank you for this thread as it has me a bit more motivated.

I have not done any destashing since the yard sale in May (after I donated all of the leftovers). It is time to get back in business.

I spent the better part of yesterday listing about 2000 comic books for sale, so lets hope that they will move out very fast!!! make me some room and some money!!!

Found about 6 books that I have read and no longer want to keep, so in the donate box they go.

My DS17 "found" a clothes basket worth of stuff to get rid of while he was cleaning his room. He wants shelves, so he needs to clean the room!!

I am hoping today I can find some more items to get rid of. If I do I will post on the thread.

I got rid of quite a few things at my yardsale last week but now the teen boy I had asked for help has shown up and yesterday he cleaned out ONE room in my storage basement. It contained 33 years plus of Christmas decorations, a few boxes for the other holidays as well.

I now have my garage half filled back up, the pool table is covered and I could not bear to part with a 'few' things that are now filling an upstairs closet.

Anyone interested in some wonderful decorations from a large home that has won awards for decorating?

I booked a Disney trip for two weeks the end of the year so guess where I will spend the proceeds?

Well, I have new motivation to destash. My grandmother, who has never been to see us since we moved to CO, called to say she booked a plane ticket to come next month! So I have to get my master bedroom/bathroom and the main living areas cleaned out so it's presentable when she gets here, and she has a nice place to stay. I told the kids we aren't going out today or tomorrow, so I guess I'd better get off the computer and start cleaning!

My dad is coming by tomorrow to pick up a mattress for a double bed. We have had it for several years but has only had 5 nights spent on it. My folks need it for their house. In exchange for the mattress, my dad who is a carpenter is making us a daybed/sofa with storage underneath from heart of pine wood from an old house in Mississippi. I had showed him a daybed from Ikea and he said that he could make a better one with better wood and would last for generations.

I am giving the bedroom suite that my grandmother gave me (which was hers as a child) to my brother for my youngest nephew. Nephew will be moving out of a baby bed to a 'big bed' in 3 months. The bedroom will stay in the family and it is something that my brother appreciates.

Next big project is to measure master closet and get closet maid system. Got to save some more money before we do that. Good luck to everyone else who is destashing.

I have been working on getting rid of outside toys. This morning I sold our playhouse on craigslist. This afternoon I have someone coming to look at a spiral slide that went to our swingset. And now I'm feeling guilty. My 11yo DS saw me taking it out of the shed and asked me what I was doing, then got all sad when I told him why. The thing is, you have to dig a hole in the ground for the pole for the slide and DH never wants to do it. So it sat in our garage for 3 years, then we moved and it's been in the shed here for 2 more years. Really he is NEVER going to put it up. And actually we need to get rid of the swingset it goes to, it needs serious repair and DH is never going to get to that either. And DH is just as bad, he'll tell me "Oh, that just needs this and this, I can do that." It's so frustrating and in the mean time our back yard looks terrible.

I'm having the same problems letting go of a sandbox that no one plays in and a couple other outdoor toys. It's not like I want to get rid of their bikes, scooters or skateboards that they DO play with. How do you get your kids to work with your destashing??

I got rid of some extra building supplies today.

First, I used up some extra 1x4's to repair my shed doors

Next I used up 2 partial gallons of exterior primer and primed the shed

I also used up my remaining gloss white for the trim of the shed

I did have to buy a gallon of paint to actually paint the shed, and it looks real nice right now!!

Also, finally threw out the left over sheetrock pieces from last fall. they really are too small to use for anything, but at least that is more that has left the house.

Now if I could find a use for the rest of the paint/stain/primer that is in the cellar, I would be doing well. But hey I will take what I can get!!

Not a lot gone but at least it was something!!!

How do you get your kids to work with your destashing??

One word. Bribery. Well - sorta.... I told our kids we are having a yard sale. And whatever they get for their old toys they can go buy something new. I say 10 toy out and 1 toy in is a pretty good deal. For everyone. ;)

I called and arranged a charity pickup for tomorrow. Then, while the kids were at VBS this morning, I was able to fill 2 trash bags full of toys and other stuff for the donation without them seeing me and trying to "rescue" things from the donation bags. I know if I can just get it out of the house, they will never miss it, but if they see me doing it, oh the weeping and gnashing of teeth over stuff they "really need"! I am hoping that once tehy are in school in the fall, I can tackle the closets in their bedrooms, but that requires more than the 2 1/2 hours a day I have available to me this week.
