Who is cancelling Disney

Well we still have our Aug and Oct plans set so I dont want to give those up but we have cancelled our June and July weekend trips because the cost of rooms are insane and it would cost me $150 in gas to get up and back. We may still go but stay GASP! Offsite using the reward miles my DH has from Priority Club....still and IF at this stage.

I just drove by the gas station close to my house and the cost is:

$4.07 for Reg
$4.19 for Mid
$4.35 for High

That is insane!

I suspect that by "income equality" you mean the top to bottom spread. I question your source, other than the old saw about "rich getting richer." Pre-depression we had Astor, Getty, Rockefeller, etc. Today, its Gates, Buffet, Wynn.

Perhaps the seeming change is that as we have moved from an agrarian/industrial based economy, there is less well paid employment for the non-skilled? This I would certainly agree with. Someone who finishes an advanced degree will certainly be able to find a higher paying job than someone with a high school or lower education. Pre-depression, people went to college, but not in the numbers you see today. There has been an "unequal" income structure since this country was founded, but by the grace of God we all have the opportunity to make choices that move us upward in the economic strata. In view of the fact that even the "poorest" American is still far better off than 85% of the rest of the world's population, I believe a lot of the class envy in this country is based on the readily available mass media pointing out the "good life" that someone else is living.

While we are on *old saws*, isn't there one about the guy who makes $10 more than you is "rich"?:goodvibes

I totally agree about your comments concerning education, with some exceptions. However, most scholars in the field of development economics would disagree with your assertion concerning the income equality during the founding of our nation. The work of Alexis de Tocqueville in the early 1830s completely debunks your notion.

I'm sorry, but I did not retain the source that I quoted earlier, but will assure you that it is a widely quoted source that I have read on many occassions. I tend to read and post on the DISboards as a lay person and not professionally.

Since our conversation appears to be off topic, I would encourage you to send me a PM if you wish to engage in a more robust discussion.

Welcome to my world. I am paying £1.25 per litre, at current exchange rates that is $11.30 USD per Imperial gallon.

Also bear in mind that in the UK my wage is heavily taxed and by the time the money hits my bank I have lost almost 40p out of every 100p I earn in tax and national insurance.

Oh and purchase tax on everything but food is 17.5%

Ima still coming to Disney though.........can't get through a year without my injection of happy time

I didn't know it was that high, I thought a gallon was around 5 pounds which would be equivalent to about $10.00 US?

Even it were $15.00, we all are envious of your mass transportation that you have available to you. The US has long loved the Automobile (and the inefficient gas engine over diesel) and have consistently let mass transportation of trains to fall to the wayside.

Agreed! :thumbsup2 I would LOVE to have the transportation options here that I had when I lived in England! We barely drove our car there, so gas prices were not that big of deal.

Nope not cancelling!!! We just booked the free dining due to a change in the start date of school. Usually out kids start the Wednesday BEFORE Labor Day...this year they sent a survey out to all the parents asking if would like to start after Labor Day but it would add 3 days to the end of the year. The responce was so great the changed the date for the 2008-2009 school year. SOOO we ARE going August 24-30 and we are diving. We have an Expedition so gas will be expensive...I figure around $665.00 if gas hits $5.00 a gallon but the is still less than half what if would cost to fly @ $250.00 per ticket (if I am lucky) x 6 = $1500.00. I am really looking forward to this trip because I thought we would not be going until next April.

Yes, the public transport is far more accessible than what we've seen in the US, BUT inflated gas prices mean the ticket prices go up. I pay almost £7 (so almost $14 on current exchange rates) for a return train ticket for about a 10 mile return journey. And don't get me started on the crowding of our trains :headache:

We debated on it and finally decided, heck no! If we're going to go into debt and possibly get thrown into the poor house, we're going to do it while having memories of a last trip to DisneyWorld! :lmao:

Amen Sis' or Bro'........I am too drunk to know ;)

We were hoping to head down next May. I still have my fingers crossed. I picked up a little part time job a few months ago to save for a trip to Disney. It is getting harder to not dip into that bank account with the price of everything going up. I heard this week that gas may hit $12 by christmas. With bills getting so tight even if I can manage getting the $$ we may decide to just keep it in the bank :sad2: with the economy changing so much.

As long as the demands of a global market exceed supply, and as long as we refuse to drill domestically, both on and offshore, and build the necessary refining capacity. Just MHO--I'm really not going to get on my soapbox.

I'm hoping after the Olympics in China are over that we'll see a reduction in diesel prices. The Chinese use diesel powered generators for power (ever wonder why diesel is so high?). They've been stockpiling it in spades for the upcoming Olympics. They sure don't want to run short with the whole world watching them.

Also, the more we explore the possibilities of cellulosic ethanol http://www.ethanolrfa.org/resource/cellulosic/ and drilling in Anwar Alaska, etc. the better off we'll be. I think fuel prices will eventually level off or maybe even drop if we can explore these other options (I hope). The joke around our house is we need a horse and buggy for travel to work and a goat to trim our lawn.

We're still traveling to Disney, but if prices get really high on airfare, we'll plan our trips closer to home and do Disney maybe once a year. We've sold off over 200 DVC points over the last 6 months and just have one small package left now. We also have an odd and even year timeshare within driving distance of our home. No Hawaii or exotic island ownerships for us as we don't know how feasible it will be to even get to those places. We're also trying to become totally debt free within the next five years (including our mortgage).

In the U.K having to think about cars like Audi A3 or vw golf. 70+ miles to the gallon and low co2 emmissions

not cancelling Disney- just keeping tighter control of everything else:headache:

We haven't officially made our reservations for our trip next year yet; however, we are still planning to go. We live in middle Georgia, about 8-9 hours drive time from WDW (includes a stop or two). Gas prices will affect when we take our trip. Hopefully, we will still get to go next year. Like most people, I'm hopeful that gass prices will stabilize and maybe even go down a little.

I have no trips to WDW this year but we are still, cautiously planning our trip for Sept '09. Hoping with it being that far out we can manage to save enough. The kids were mad at us for honeymooning there last year and not taking everyone, lol. So, this is a promised trip...hopefully the ecnomy won't make me break that promise. Luckily, with 3 kids we should get a nice tax return we can use for vacation next year, not to mention the 2 big bonuses DH gets thru the year.
We're not planning on flying unless I can find great deals. We will probably rent a minivan to drive down and save the wear and tear on the family van. DH gets a big discount on rentals thru work. Gotta love the little perks. :thumbsup2 From where we are in VA it's about a 13 hour drive. Hopefully gas prices will at least stabilize and level out some by then.
We can only afford Disney every other year anyway, we'll just tighten up in some other areas. In our off Disney years, we go to Cape Cod, which is basically a free trip except for gas and a meal or 2 out.

Sure everything has gone up....food and gas in particular but we work all year to pay these bills and I just don't see a point in working and living if all we do is live to work to pay off the bills and nothing else.

It's absurd but we, like many Americans are using credit cards a bit more than usual to cover some stuff like vacations. For example, we booked at trip last December for an October trip to Mexico. We will have about 1/2 of that trip paid off by the time we go. This leaves about 1500 on our CC. We are usually against using CC's but we have to live and have 1 or 2 weeks a year where we travel. I don't care what the cost. I figure having only a couple grand on CC's puts us in a better spot than most Americans. We will pay it off completely with our tax rebate in February. Such is life!

As my dad says 'ya can't take it with you'.

Since we really hate using vacation days as travel days, we are too far to drive, at least until the little ones are older and fewer stops would be needed.
We have a trip for Sept -Oct planned. But if gas prices don't go down, our one week cape trip will definatley be two and no more disney for a while. We also live close to a Six Flags and find that very enjoyable as well. There are many great options that don't include the extra cost of airfare for FOUR! :faint: :goodvibes

We're not planning on cancelling yet. Hopefully gas prices will start coming back down once summer is over (we're not going until December). There are so many things that can change between now and then. Gas prices are up dramatically since just last month. They can go up again or back down in the same amount of time. The only thing DW and are doing is keep on saving and keep on finding ways to cut back.

No one knows when prices are going to come back down...:confused3

I probably shouldn't be posting to this thread because we are DINKs and are blessed with the ability to have two trips planned for the remainder of the year. I already went solo last month for a long weekend. Our September trip is more or less paid for already. I am paying for the hotel. Our tickets are left over from our trip last year. Corey already bought our flights for cheap and thank goodness DME is FREE! All other things, like dog boarding, food, and souveniers are being covered by Corey. I did initially have us booked at the Poly, but I just can't swing that, so we are now booked at CSR in a king room.

Our December trip, wow, it's the trip that has had Corey tied up in knots for months. Corey's mom is joining us on property for the entire stay, which is 9 nights. If she wasn't joining us, we would probably stay less days and do more, but Ms. Ree just isn't up to all of the stuff that we could get into even with a 9 night stay, so we are blessed with the ability to take our time and give them some great mother-daughter bonding time. Corey really wants to pay for our trip and to be able to cover her mom's expenses too. I don't know that we are going to be 100% successful in covering the whole bill for her mom, but we really want to. Her mom still thinks she is paying for herself. We haven't told her otherwise. In addition, we had hoped to upgrade from two rooms at ASMo to a 2 bedroom suite at OKW, but I just don't see that happening. Even with AAA, it's just not an expense that we can justify. I have pretty much given up hope that we will be able to upgrade our room like that, but it's still what I would dream of doing.

Everything costs more these days. We have let our free market economy screw up our country with the outsourcing of our industries. We are a nation that can't feed itself. We are a nation that can't clothe itself. We are a nation that can't do much more than service and even that is based largely on computers that we don't build and parts for stuff that we don't make. If we had to close our borders for real, we would be so screwed. Life as we have known it in this country is coming to a halt all too soon, I fear. But, we did it to ourselves.

Gas prices are the same here in Port St Lucie. They went up 10 cents a gallon since Friday.
