Who is cancelling Disney

not us ... :thumbsup2
Gas price is not stopping us from getting our disney Fix ... Our Trip is paid in full .. So $300 for gas round trip is not stopping us...:cool1:

for an eye opener, go to one of the online calculators and compare today's price to prices in the early 80's with the $ being adjusted for inflation....not that big of a difference. :)

for example, a $2.00 item in 1980 would cost the following in 2007, based solely on inflation:

$5.03 using the Consumer Price Index
$4.43 using the GDP deflator
$6.23 using the value of consumer bundle *
$4.92 using the unskilled wage *
$7.48 using the nominal GDP per capita
$9.92 using the relative share of GDP

* The 2007 data for unskilled wage and consumer bundle are estimated and will be adjusted when official data become available.

under that idea, if gas was $2.00 a gallon then (sorry, I don't recall how much it was in 1980, but used $2), then even here in super-expensive California my $4.40/gal is cheaper in real dollars than it was in 1980.

Thanks for the caculations.

This is from an Economy/price chart I found online for 1980:

http://www.1980sflashback.com/1980/ECONOMY.asp

1980 Economy / Prices
Prices

Cost of a new home: $76,400.00
Median Household Income: $17,710.00
Cost of a first-class stamp: $0.15
Cost of a gallon of regular gas: $1.25
Cost of a dozen eggs: $0.91
Cost of a gallon of Milk: $2.16

GAS PRICES GOING UP IS A GOOD THING?? FOR WHO?? I KNOW OPEC OIL COMPANY AND ALL THE GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS WHO HAVE STOCKS IN OIL!!!! THIS IS ALL HAPPENING WHILE THE MIDDLE CLASS IS LOSING EVERYTHING, OH WAIT THERE IS NO LONGER A MIDDLE CLASS, B/C ALL OF OUR JOBS HAVE BEEN SHIPPED OVER SEAS. B/C WE NO LONGER BUY AMERICAN PRODUCTS!!!! GOING ON VACATION WILL SOON BE A THING OF THE PAST AIRLINE PRICES ARE DOUBLING AND THE COST OF EVERYTHING IS GOING UP!!!! :headache:

I agree with you......100%

Not us. I already booked $108 round trip tickets with airtran out of Dulles for our Dec trip.

Don't feel to bad because here in Canada our gas works out nearly $5 a gallon. Right now our pump price here in southern Ont. is between $1.25 and $1.27 a litre. 4 litres to a gallon you do the math. And 35 percent of that price is tax. :scared1: But our trip is till a go.

Definitely not cancelling. This is all I have to look forward to anymore. I have given up most things just because visiting Disney is so important to me. It will probably cost us about $150 for gas round trip, but I can't think of a better way to spend it. We have AP's tha texpire by the end of our December trip that I want to get my money's worth out of.

Besides, I am having my third yard sale tomorrow so that I can have some extra money.

We're not cancelling either. DH and I are taking our 2 children, my mom, and 2 nieces for 7 days at Christmas. DH and I are DVC members so the room is paid for. My mom is paying for tix and DDP for all of us, so that leaves transportation.

Even with gas at $4.00/gallon, it will still only cost about $300 for gas round trip in my car. We are adjusting our budget in other ways, driving mostly my car and parking DH small SUV (except for him to go to work), we are still well under the gas budget that I set last year when gas was only about $3/gallon.

I work in the mental health field and I need my vacations. We usually travel 1-2 weeks during the year, although I do more research looking for deals before choosing a destination.

I just decided YESTERDAY to head to WDW in Sept 08. Plane tickets are$79 each way. No charge for ONE checked bag.
Guess who is already booked?

Wow! I can't imagine how that would feel. My drive to work one way is almost 70 miles. I drive the most economical car I can, but it's taking one whole paycheck each month to pay for mine and DH's gas back and forth to work. There just aren't any opportunities for work in our area, we live in a very rural setting. :goodvibes

I'mwithGrumpy...I'm with you! ;) I commute 60 miles one way to work. There are really no opportunities in my area for my profession. My husband works in the town we live in...so he doesn't use as much gas as I do. Unfortunately, he drives a suburban...so it takes a lot to fill it up. (We have the suburban out of necessity.) We would move half way between mine and DH's work...but with the housing slump, I can't afford to risk losing an arm and a leg on our house. Having rambled about all of that...we are not cancelling our trip for this fall. Still have some more payments, but that's okay, too. I'll get there soon!

I have to ask, what do you need a Suburban for?

This has me perplexed on why people would cancel a trip because of gas prices. Its not like you woke up one day and the prices were all of a sudden over $4 a gallon, its been a gradual increase.

For example for us to drive to WDW, I figured 2800 miles (20 mpg) round trip at $4 a gallon, that equals $560 for gas. So, when I planned the trip, say gas was $3 a gallon so that trip would be $420. You would cancel a family summer vacation for $140 :confused3

I truly don't get it? If that were me I'd just budget my vacation and meals a little tighter. I think people are freaking out at the price per gallon (which is ridiculous BTW), and not actually figuring out that they really don't need to cancel their trips because of a sticker shock.

:thumbsup2 I agree...We took the additional money we would need for gas and took off one of the ressies and get counter service instead......

Some people have larger families which to travel together require a larger vehicle. Even mini vans are lousy on gas. If one has a smaller family then smaller more fuel efficient vehicles are absolutely more practical.

Gas prices are scary as they affect everything. There was no way I'd drive from Las Vegas to DW. I don't even drive to DL! I had a really bad roll-over accident last year on the 15 and I refuse to drive down there again. I was persistent and found an amazing fare on USAir for 4 people $1000--Non Stop! The only hitch is that we have to leave Tues to Tues but not at such weird times so it's not too bad. The gas prices are just another indicator of the bad economy. I really need this vacation. A huge part of my work load/referral source was cut out. However, I refused to let it get me down. I'm a single mom and it's hard trying to give my kids a "normal" family life. Mickey and Disney fill in the gaps nicely for us. Just booked our trip yesterday. Flying out end of August.

The Silly-Tomorrowland Side of Me can't wait to have the future catch up with us with transportation!!! I'm looking forward to our next vehicle being a hybrid of some sort. At this point we're enjoying our Nissans. Our truck isn't very economical, but other than ocassional close weekend camping trips in the fall and the wonderful 1-2 week trips out west every few years, the most I drive it is 10 miles a day. DH drives our Sentra which does OK for gas milage -- we'll probably trade it in (even though it's newer) for a hybrid in the next few years...

Gas prices do stink, but it's been coming for a long time, whether we want to admit to it or not. The cost of food and other essentials and nonessentials is hitting all of us hard right now. It's not going to be easy. I truly think closer to home vacations are going to become more the norm & more fun (as communities realize they can rally their populations for fun!!)...

I agree that its the affect from the gas increase. Higher groceries, higher snacks, repair bills, Even getting a pet has become a huge finacial commitement. I will probably go back at some point, but most likely not for a while. I think camping out in the White Mountains with our kayaks and bicycles will do quite nicely this year. Sitting by a campfire next to a river is cheaper and not too bad. Just one person who wont be standing in a 40 minute line this year. My thrill ride will be from sitting in an innertube. Maybe next year I will return to see the mouse.

I'm not "freaking out" over the rise in gas prices, but in the back of my mind, I wonder "how long??" I mean, how long can the price of a barrel of oil continue to reach a "record high," every single day?!

As long as the demands of a global market exceed supply, and as long as we refuse to drill domestically, both on and offshore, and build the necessary refining capacity. Just MHO--I'm really not going to get on my soapbox.

I am not going till next year but that could change. With all the increase we are not even getting a cost of living raise that is correct. The seniors are being shaffed evey way you look at it as well as the common blue and white collar worker. I will on retirement next year and I don't see how any future trips will happen with the they way things are going. Goverment needs to Stop giving our resoruces overseas and take care of our own first. We have very real needs here for the elderly and homeless. Many of us may me homeless if this rise in prices continues and banks foreclose on more and more homes. I pray that the goverment will stop sitting on there ??? and wake up to the crises we are facing.

We have had to from SSR to CBR to save money. The economy sucks!!!!! However I am a firm beliver that everything works out!!!

To say gas has been a gradual increase, if you consider in a month gradula well then okay. Over history thee has never been this kind of increase. And yes it can impact a family who had planned a trip. Its not just about one trip it is about family life overall. Lets just say you were paying $60 in gas a couple of months ago a wekk, well now you are paying close to $100. That can significantly impact a family budget and you may not have money for extras like a family vacation.

You have to look at the big picture. JMO

Even though I only have two children, my oldest DD has a disability and requires the use of a wheelchair...so that's where the suburban comes in. We have a lift in the back of our suburban that loads her wheelchair and we still have room to use the third row if we have extra passengers! And you are right...mini vans are lousy on gas, too. (My DH does not like mini vans...that's putting it nicely :lmao: ) When we bought our suburban four years ago, gas wasn't that big of an issue.
