Who is cancelling Disney

*SNIP*
I work in the mental health field and I need my vacations. We usually travel 1-2 weeks during the year, although I do more research looking for deals before choosing a destination.

Oh gosh! I work inpatient psych and boy do I need my vacations too! I try and take 3 a year. First one was just my 4 y/o and I for a 3n cruise and a night in Ft Lauderdale.

Then hubby and I are taking our friends on their first cruise in August and will have a 5n cruise and 2n in FLL.

Then 10 nights in Disney with the kids for FD. I sooo need to get away. This is a tough field but I love working here

Not cancelling. I've been saving for this trip in December which I really need. The only adjustment I'm making is only going once next year instead of twice and has more to do with saving money for a new house rather than gas prices.

We aren't going to cancel because of the gas prices. (We are flying and bought our airfare back in early February)

However, both of my ILs are undergoing treatment for cancer (FIL-lung, MIL-breast) so that might cause us to cancel. It's been an unbelievably bad year!

Not us! We're leaving in about 1 month. Driving down to FL from PA like we do every year.:cool1:

We're not going to cancel, but boy do I have more guilt than usual :) I keep thinking we should at least scale back our vacation plans and budget. It's not just gas prices that have gone up for us, but groceries, private school tuition, property taxes while our savings interest rates are going down. I just keep thinking about all the other things we could use that vacation money for. :worried:

I would not cancel due to gas prices for the trip itself, I would just budget the necessary amount as part of the expense of the vacation.

However, given that the day to day cost of living due to increase in the gas food, and other prices have gone up significantly, and many people have experienced a net decrease in take home pay due to health care costs and low/no raises, I can see how it is more difficult to save for trips. From that standpoint I can see cancelling or not planning a trip.

Gas prices and grocery prices are scary, but we all need our vacations. It's a very important part of our lives and I for one don't intend to stop going on vacation. We may go a little less, or take shorter trips - something like that but we'll always go. To Disney and other places.

In fact, in 15 days we'll be there! We're flying this time. Got great airfare and even with the rental car, it's not that bad! It's almost as if flying is cheaper. Especially if you use Magical Express. I can't do that - I need the freedom of a rental car. But, you never know, if I have to give up something I would give up the rental car and bus it!!!

But I'm going!

I believe we will be cancelling our September trip. We have decided to use the $$ to get new windows for our house so that our winter heating bill won't be so bad next year. At least that is the plan. :confused3
Also our town has just gone thru a reevalution of our house. Our taxes have gone up over $1800 in one year. :furious: Extra $150/month is really starting to hurt.

I was concerned that gas would be $4.00 per gallon and figured it would cost around $500+ plus for gas and we get a room each way. A few weeks ago I decided to really look hard for airfare to match/beat the cost of driving down. I was able to get a pretty good rate on NW, we will now have to rent a car since DD is playing volleyball @ WDW & the convention center, but I feel good about making the change.
We will miss our stops @ Sonic and Chik a Fil tho. We love both and there aren't any of either in Michigan.:sad2:

They just opened a Sonic here in Michigan!!

I am hoping that anyone who cancels their trip..are ones who were planning on visiting between Aug.20 and Aug.27. Which just happens to be when I will be there. :rolleyes1

We're not canceling. But I have thought about scaling back on my resort room. Right now, we're booked at CR MK view and I've thought about doing CR garden view or WL. Or even doing a split-stay with a Mod (although I really don't want to worry about switching resorts while we're there).

I just got off the phone with Disney - I cancelled 2 rooms at All-Star Music from Aug 31-Sept 6 with free dining. :( I was going to go with my sister and her 2 kids (sister is divorced, lives paycheck to paycheck). The free dining is a great deal, but still the trip was just too much money. So instead I will try a budget solo trip in October, so not all is lost. :)

Thank goodness I work from home. The most gas I spend during the school year is taking my princess to school. Other than that the money that would be spent on gas for working outside of the home is used for any trip we take.

Not canceling our trip the end of August - I booked reasonable airfare and it's non-refundable :rotfl:

Those who are having a hard time with the cost of airfare though might want to look into the train. I didn't have the time to spare pre & post vacation to travel, but the prices were right & it sounded like fun, at least trying it for 1 way.

We are Florida AP's and usually go to Disney at least 5 times a year. We did take a trip to Vegas a couple of weeks ago for our daughter's wedding so we did have to cut back on our visits to Disney this year. We will going in Aug. and staying at the Dolphin, but that will probably be our last trip for the year.

This has me perplexed on why people would cancel a trip because of gas prices. Its not like you woke up one day and the prices were all of a sudden over $4 a gallon, its been a gradual increase.

For example for us to drive to WDW, I figured 2800 miles (20 mpg) round trip at $4 a gallon, that equals $560 for gas. So, when I planned the trip, say gas was $3 a gallon so that trip would be $420. You would cancel a family summer vacation for $140 :confused3

I truly don't get it? If that were me I'd just budget my vacation and meals a little tighter. I think people are freaking out at the price per gallon (which is ridiculous BTW), and not actually figuring out that they really don't need to cancel their trips because of a sticker shock.

Just what I was thinking......Great minds!:moped:

I believe it isn't the actual gas one might be using to get to Disney that would make or break the trip..but what kind of effect the increase in gas is having on a daily basis.....before you ever get to take the trip. Saving an extra $140.00 might not break the bank. It's the cost of the groceries...increased because of the price of gas. It's the increase in what it's costing us weekly to commute to our jobs..that's going to make saving that extra $140.00 tough to do. Not all have the option of mass transit...where perhaps you're not feeling the pinch. Gas is $4.20 a gallon where I am today..and it's increased 10 cents in a week. The cost of commuting on a daily basis to work has to be figured into the weekly budget now. So..it's just not that it might cost a family a few extra dollars for the Disney trip..it's the cost of gas on a daily..weekly basis, that's cutting into the family budget. Makes a lot of folks nervous.

No we won't be cancelling any of our trips this year(we have 4 scheduled in the next 2 years so who knows what will happen next year) but we will be scaling back on the trips. Luckily we bought into DVC and have a good chunk of it paid off. We pay our member dues monthly so the cost is built into our normal day to day bills.

This saves thousands for us in hotel that would otherwise have to pay opp. That in combo with a great deal on AP's from DVC, flying Jetblue which is reasonable and the dining plan makes the trips do-able. Otherwise i probably would be cancelling as well:(
