While doing my grocery shopping at Wal Mart yesterday I was pricing the laundry detergents. I use Gain Original Scent, but was noticing that Sun detergent is alot cheaper. How does the scent of your clothes compare to Gains? Does Sun clean your clothes really well? I noticed that you can get a bucket of Sun that has 150 loads for $8.98 or you can get the liquid that has 120 loads for $5.38 (which per load is cheaper than the bucket) Which do you prefer? At these prices I would save money by buying Sun and then maybe buying Gain Fabric Softner for the smell. Help!!

There have been a few threads on here about Sun detergent. IIRC, most people related that the Sun detergent did not last for as many loads as the bottle indicated it would and that it didn't clean very well at all, never mind the scent!

I use Sun. I think it does fine for cleaning. The scent isn't very strong, but we don't like overly scented clothing anyways. But, it's only DH and me and neither of us do anything to get overly "dirty", so other's situations may be different.

Lately, in my Wal-Mart, they have only carried the concentrated liquid Sun (supposed to be more loads for a smaller bottle). I don't get the recommended load numbers out of that, but I'm not sure if it's the detergent's fault or just me mentally not able to use that little detergent per load.

Try buying a small bottle (under $3.00) and see if you like it or not.

I tried it..thought it was really thin..like watery. I'm used to using the detergent from Aldi's though-they have one that is supposed to compare to Tide...I haven't tried it but the Astra is supposed to be like Purex (it says 32 loads per bottle- for $2.00). I personally think its better than most of the low price detergent..really thick and we sell the heck out of it. I use it with the Suavitil softner- and everything smells great!

I use Astra from Aldi. Under $2. It lasts us a month. It's very thick, smells nice, and cleans out my three boys' stains that they come up with. I've been using it for about 2 years.

:laundy: Just wanted to add...I tried the SUN and had a very bad allergic reaction to it. Everything I touched that I had washed in it made me break out and itch.
It did not enjoy rewashing all the clean laundry. If you have allergies I would test it on something first.

I have been using it for 3 yeras now! I use one bucket every monthe ( 6 people) It works well I also use Okyc:banana: lean with it!!!

I'll pipe in with a thumbs down. However, I am going to try the liquid (been using the powder) and see if I have better luck.

My DH brought this home one day when I asked him to pick up laundry detergent. I threw it out after using it one time. I thought it was terrible.

I didn't like it, I had to put in more to get the clothes clean. I've used Gain and Arm & Hammer which work better than Sun. I think they also sell it at the Dollar Store in smaller bottles.

I must not be picky, because I for the first time, purchase Sun when we went to WDW in Sept to take to the laundry facility at the hotel. At home we use Kirkland brand but it's in a huge container! So I bought my little container of Sun and it worked just fine. I didn't notice any difference. I didn't even notice the smell.

Like I said, I must not be picky. I used to only use Tide but soon realized it's not any better than anything else. Why pay extra for nothing?

DD and her DH use "Extra" - the huge liquid container with the spout (used to use Gain, Dynamo or Tide) - and will never go back to paying outrageous prices for detergents that don't work any better.. They (we) don't have to use any more of it than the name brand products and it does the job nicely..:)

For "smell" they use Bounty dryer sheets..

Why worry about the scent? Personally, I won't buy scented laundry products, dryer sheets, etc. The whole idea of washing your clothes is so they don't "smell"!

I like ALL, the liquid, unscented, dye-free, essentially nothing but detergent. I forget the price but it was the best deal around, got a huge jug from WalMart.

Why worry about the scent? .
----------------------------

Some people like their clean clothes to have a "scent" - others don't (or can't - due to allergies).. Strictly a personal choice..

However, I have to admit that every time I smell clothes that have been washed in Dynamo, I think of my late father.. That's what Mom used the last few years he was alive.. :(

Sorry to get away from the original question, but has anyone else noticed that most stores are carrying less and less powder? I use Arm & Hammer, because it works for our family's allergies, it is cost efficient and cleans well.
It is getting harder to find though, along with other powders....??

Do you think Astra is comprable (sp?) to Tide? I became a 100% Tide convert a few years ago after only buying what was "on sale" all the time.

I'm also major Aldi shopper & really think that many of their store brand items are name brand things. (I would bet that they carry many Proctor & Gamble/Kraft items).

Anyway, how do you think it compares? I'd be willing to give it a try to save a few $'s!

I use the Sun Burst concentrated on my DH's clothes and I think it works just fine. If things are extra dirty I add some Oxyclean to it, but his clothes always come out clean. I use Sun unscented on my clothes (I can't use scented detergents) and that works fine, too.

I agree, Minniebeth! I gave up on finding powdered detergent that I could use. Our local stores only carry stuff that's heavily scented, and the section of powdered detergents is shrinking every 6 months. Save-a-Lot had a great powdered detergent but they phased it out and replaced it with something that makes me sneeze just walking through the aisle.

I work at a store and we seem to sell a "Pooh" size load of Sun. It is the top seller in the laundry soap. I haven't used it myself but a lot of people seem to like it. As for poweder soap, I hear that it is bad for the washer. But thats what I hear. *shrug* I don't do my own laundry.

Powder detergent is what causes "soap lock" in a washer, but I don't think that is why they are not making it so much anymore, I'd bet consumer research suggests that people like the liquid better and purchase more of it. BTW I have not used Sun products, but have noticed that the doller tree in my area sells that as their main laundry product. I have tried less expensive detergent but always end up back to wisk or tide I find that my clothing lasts longer (less fading and pilling) than less expensive powdered/liquid detergents. :confused3

I dont know if they have Meijer where you are at but the one here sells this soap called Dynamo. Its around 12 bucks for a huge one of it. it sounds like a lot for a 'off brand' but they usually have a deal where you buy one and get two free.it lasts for a long time and it works good. we use it because my mom does a lot of other family memebers laundry (grandparents and what not)
