Who eats these things?

We went to the Florida State Fair this weekend, and one of the things that seems to be a specialty there is deep frying strange things. Every year there are more and more deep fried "treats."

Some of the things we saw:

Deep fried oreos
Deep fried candy bars
Deep fried twinkies
Deep fried Pepsi (don't ask me to explain :confused3 )

Those things look and sound disgusting to me and DH, and I've never known anyone who has actually eaten these things.

Have you ever eaten something like this? Was it good?

I tried a deep fried Oreo at Sic Flags once. One was raw, but the cooked ones were ok.

Pepsi??? How the heck do they do THAT?? You don't have to explain but I had to comment on it. ;)

No, I've never had any of those things. One huge reason is that I'm afraid to try it because I might like 'em too much. :rotfl2: Same reason I've never tried a Monte Cristo sandwich--even though DH loves them.

Yuck. I've tried a deep fried twinkie once and it was gross. There are plenty of things that are good without needing to be deep fried. I don't get it either. :confused3

Sounds delicious to me, but no, I have never tried them.

Had the deep fried oreos and the deep fried (English) Mars bar, and both are far from disgusting! :thumbsup2

Deep fried Pepsi does sound a little off-putting (not to mention confusing), though.

:wave2: :wave2:

Only once or twice a year (at fairs :thumbsup2 ), but with the exception of the deep fried pepsi (which I understood to be like a funnel cake, just made with soda rather than water), I've tried all of those at least once. :thumbsup2

My theory -- take something good, dunk it in batter and deep fry it and it's just that much better!! :cool1: :cool1:

I love deep fried oreos! But I'll admit I can only eat one or two and then they get a little gross. They are delicious, the oreo melts inside the deep fried dough, yummy.

Deep fried pepsi? I think someone needs to explain that one to me.

* We tried a deep-fried Snicker bar at a Ren-Fest. 5 of us split 1 -- it was really good, but really rich. Don't think this could be a regular part of any one's diet, however.

* Never tried the others -- although I have seen the kits for the twinkies at Wal-Mart.

*I watched Samantha Brown's show on Scotland -- and apparently deep-fried Mars bars are the rage over there.

* Please explain the pepsi -- just can't figure that out.

I have tried the fried Twinkies and a candy bar(I think it was Snicker's). They were both very good(and very rich). :)

They had deep fried Coke at the state fair here last fall. It's a batter like a funnel cake, and they used Coke syrup as part of the liquid. When they cooked it, it was in pieces, not like a flat funnel cake and served in a cup. One I saw had whipped cream and a cherry on it. It just looked gross to me!

I saw a couple, and they had a deep fried cheeseburger, deep fried coke, a slice of pizza and a roasted ear of corn and passed it back and forth. I think I gained 5 pounds just watching them eat!

Wow, it's no wonder we are such an obese nation...let's take the worst of the worst, and DEEP-FRY it!

I feel my arteries slowing down just READING about that kind of stuff--no way I could try it. I KNOW I would love them and since I'm trying to lose weight, I would be completely defeating my purpose.

I've had a deep fried twinkie...it was pretty good b/c it is battered then fried, and the cream filling melts into the cake. At my old work there was a farmer's market every friday and one booth had deep fried twinkies with chocolate syrup on top. I took one back to the office and people practically passed out when they found out what it was...:rotfl:

I've had deep fried candy bars and those are pretty good, too (we experimented one thanksgiving when we had the fryer going for turkey).

Last fall at the L.A. county fair, they had the most artery clogging thing i could think of - krispy kreme chicken sandwiches! Fried chicken with a krispy kreme as the bread... :faint:

Thank you for that explanation, because we weren't able to quite figure out what they did!

No problem. :) I remember reading about it this summer and initially thinking that it was pretty disgusting sounding (thinking they actually somehow took the soda and deep fried it), but then once I read where the Coke/Pepsi actually came in, I realized it wasn't that strange after all.
