putting stickers on fruit was a good thing???

Why oh why oh why oh why :confused3

Ok, I feel better now...
Thanks for letting me vent :o

You must think of this through the eyes of the seller. They need something to identify their fruits so they don't get mixed up with any fruit of another brand. Of course, once the fruit is sold, the sticker becomes useless.
...
Did you figure out the hard way that they are not for eating? I kid... it was most likey an honest mistake... tell me more about what caused you to vent, it intriques me in a spooky sort of way.

Actually, I did have someone tell me once that the stickers
became popular because it was seen as an advertising tool.
(if you read them they usually have little ads on them,
not just an identifying number).

I don't buy the line: "you must think of... the seller".
Every market in my lifetime did quite well with a list at
the register telling the cashier what the code number was
for every type of fruit they carried.
In fact, most supermarkets no matter how big or small
still use a list for their sale items, and if I bring a bag
of fruit to the register and they can't read the sticker
then they still have a little book to look up the number.

I am just annoyed at every single plum, apple, whatever
having a sticker that causes me to attempt to remove
it without breaking the skin of the fruit - especially soft fruit.

And yes, while there are people in deep peril down south
and elsewhere tonight, I realize if I can complain about
stickers on fruit my life is pretty good...

And no, I've never eaten one by mistake
but I can see that happening...

I always leave them stuck to the side of the kitchen sink, or on the counter....drives DH nuts.

the little books were fine until we started having different variteties of the same fruit. For example, I will pay less for my Jonathan apple than I will for my heirloom. With out the plu# the cashier has no idea which is which. To most of them an apple is an apple.

I will pay more for organic fruit and veggies than for the regular, but without the little stickers who knows which is which?

As for the ads, somebody has to pay to print the stickers, so why shouldn't they be able to at least get a little payback on it.

I guess I like to little stickers because I have had to pay extra for things I didn't buy too many time! I am not paying for my lettuce by the pound when I get a head of iceburg. If I went cheap and bought the roma tomatoes, thats what I want to pay for.

I don't mind 'em so much on the bananas, though!
I remember when I was a kid, the big thing to do was peel off the Chiquita Banana stickers and wear them on your hand/arm/where ever! They were blue and had a drawing of the Chiquita Banana lady on them:banana:!

Yep, we did the same thing with the banana stickers!
The good thing about their sticker is there's
only one on the whole bunch, and it's big!

I do that too! Except my DFi could care less! :teeth:

DS4 thinks the sticker is a bonus prize for eating the fruit. :rotfl:

Don't worry about the stickers. Soon they will be gone. There is new technology that will tatoo your fruits and veggies. It will have a barcode and name on the item so no-one can take the stickers off.

This new technology should come out late next year.

I have a fruit sticker collection on my shelf above my desk at work :)

Thanks for the link, HappyMommy2!

DH and I just talked about this tonight when
I told him I posted about it.
We were like, "If they can put safe, edible printing
on M&M's, Easter Candy, Skittles, etc.
why can't they do the same thing with fruit?"
We did have a short conversation about the "why"
of identifying some fruit, as posted here by others,
but continued to agree that it's annoying to have them!

(No, our life is not that boring that this is our only subject
of conversation, but we have a 2 year old who understands
everything so this is as "serious" as our talks get in front of him - LOL!).

P.S. Aidensmom, I loved your post :rotfl: .

I hate the stickers although if we're playing with our cat he loves to step on them and run around getting them off. I swear he sees us pull them off and he's over under our feet meowing.

And you don't eat the banana skin  (at least I don't)
