Whirlwind Trippers Strike Again:The One With the Broken Arm*DONE! PG 5*PICS ADDED!!

You guys keep your clothes in suitcases for just such a thing right?

No way on earth I could get my family packed that quick!

hope Wesley is feeling good and his arm is getting better poor little guy.

Wesley has just returned from his first orthopedic checkup. His arm is healing properly, and the nurse was suitably impressed at the number of hottie signatures we had managed to procure (and sqeeze on his cast). Thanks to all for your :grouphug: :goodvibes   pixiedust: for Wesley. It has definitely helped ALL of us!!

As to the packing. Guys. It was an OVERNIGHT trip. We only needed a change of clothes and toiletries. And Sharpies. And books to read on the way down. And stuffed animals. And ponchos. And Mark's laptop. And the camera. And video camera. And extra batteries. And Pal Mickey. But this time our overnight bag, video camera and Pal Mickey all were at the church (long story, it's because of the Disney class Mark has been teaching there), so that added some time, also. AND, we had no juice boxes in the house, which warranted a trip to Kroger. And then we still had to get lunch on the way out of town. An hour (plus), actually, was a little disappointing to us. Because we HAVE done it in 20 minutes! :woohoo:

Sorry that Wesley broke his arm, but glad he was able to go to Disney :) And extra glad that his arm his healing nicely.

20 Minutes!!!! Goodness you must be one of those people who doesn't make a mess getting dressed in the morning.

My packing list for an overnight trip to disney would have to include the following.

two swimsuits (well I might change my mind)
Dressy clothes (in case we have nice meal)
sweaters
pants
shorts
tshirt
tank top
jammies
skirt
three pairs of shoes

And I don't have a pal mickey or camera batteries to do deal with.

You are amazing!

Glad to hear that Wesley is doing better and has so many cool siggies on his cast!

I'm with ya! I do not know the meaning of "packing lightly"! :rolleyes1
DH (lacto) still hopes and prays I will learn before our 8 days in September!

Hey guys.

Glad to see/hear that Wesley is doing well. Great start to the TR. I mentioned something about a Whirlwind trip in Sept...did you not see that, or were you just ignoring me.

Either way, I'm used to it. :teeth:

Now, write faster.

The Trip, Day 1, Part 1: A Lesson In Patience
Because we are such savvy Disney-goers, while Mark was on the phone checking room availability (and booking the Princess Storybook Breakfast), I was online checking park hours. Well, yippee-kie-yay (Chappie, is that spelled right? Cause I didn't look it up!), MK has EMH tonight! That means we could be there til 2am!! And THAT means that Wesley MUST have a nap on the way down. He was fairly agreeable to that (he doesn’t take naps anymore, ordinarily), and by 1:45 he had already dozed off. We were congratulating ourselves on our fine parenting diplomacy skills. However, when Mark’s cell phone rang (Bare Necessities) 30 minutes later, things were not looking so rosy. It wasn’t the phone call itself (exterminators scheduling an appointment), although in Mark’s business, that can often spell trouble. No, the phone call woke Wesley. And here’s the thing with him. Once he’s awake, he’s awake. Which meant, basically, that none of us were very happy for the remainder of the drive. Mark and I wanted him to go back to sleep. We knew that it was really essential, if we were going to be at the MK as long as we’d planned. Wesley did NOT want to go back to sleep. Period. And there ensued a battle of the wills, so to speak. I’d say it was a draw. He never went back to sleep, but he did stay quiet, and actually rested a bit with his eyes closed for a while.

Of course, once we hit Disney property around 6pm, all ill moods were gone. We happily drove up to the Yacht Club, excited to be staying at one of our “dream” resorts. We cheerfully walked in to have a quick check-in and be on our way to the MK. And that’s when our “dream” became more like an in-your-face-reality. There was a LINE to check in. And there were only two checker-inners. Still, we reasoned, how long could it take? There were only 6 or 7 families ahead of us. Some sort of convention was going on. But I don’t think most of the people waiting in line were with the convention. The girl in front of us kept up a running conversation with someone via cell phone, so after a while, we just watched the floor and listened to her updates on the movement (or not) of the line, instead of troubling ourselves to look. When her suitcase on wheels moved, we knew we should, too. But we had noticed something odd. Every time a new person/family advanced to the desk, the check in person would tap on the keyboard for a few minutes, and then immediately leave the front desk. Not to return for minutes. Upon minutes. After about 20 minutes of waiting, the convention must’ve gotten out for dinner or something. And apparently, a great number of the conventioneers did not have room keys. So one lady goes to the front of the line and says to the family standing there: “I’m already HERE, I just need to get my room key…so you don’t mind if I go next, do you?” I don’t know what the response of that particular family was. But the girl in front of us told her in no uncertain terms that ALL of us were already HERE, and that ALL of us “only needed to get our room keys”, so she could very kindly take her key-less self to the END of the line. It was quite amusing.

Twenty minutes after that, the amusement had worn off. And the lady had apparently decided she didn’t really need a key, after all, because she left the end of the line and joined someone else (who, presumably, already HAD a key). A few minutes later, it was finally our turn to approach the desk. We were greeted very amiably, and she apologized for our wait, explaining that they were “understaffed” tonight. Huh. Ya think? It is, by now, 6:45-ish. She starts the keyboard tapping. She does some more tapping. And a bit more. And then picks up the phone and has a conversation with someone. And THEN she says…”I’m not sure that your room is ready. Let me go check.” WHAT? Is THIS why the checker-inners kept leaving the front desk? To go see if rooms were ready? After about 10 minutes, she finally returns. And apparently, our room was NOT ready. So she tapped some more. And at last, we were given a room number (an upgrade, since our room wasn’t ready) and she printed out our keys. An hour after our arrival.

And then came the trek to our room. It was about as long from the lobby to our room as it is around the World Showcase. It took roughly the same amount of time, anyway. The room itself was very nice, and we had a “water view”: the quiet pool. The view was pretty, with crepe myrtles and greenery surrounding the pool. Too bad we weren’t there long enough to enjoy it. We refrigerated necessary items and checked our park bag to make sure we had everything. Then we struck out again for the elevators. We were MK bound!

We were driving to MK. We don’t do Disney buses. Because we were coming in so late, we actually got a great parking place. We were in Minnie 38. We took a quick hike to the TTC, and boarded the monorail. Wow, we’ll be at the MK in about 5 minutes! Only, after about 5 minutes… we had stopped. On the track. It seems they were running their twice daily test. Of something. So we would pull forward several feet, and then stop for 5 minutes. Our 5 minute monorail ride took about 20 minutes. We were all getting antsy. FINALLY, the monorail completed the test, and we disembarked. It’s about 7:55, we’ve been on property almost 2 hours, and still have not entered a park. We had our bags searched, and looked for the shortest entrance line. But it’s just like the grocery store, you know? The line you pick is ALWAYS going to be the one with problems. Eventually, everyone managed to get their fingers scanned correctly, and it was our turn. We, being the experts that we are, have no problem getting our fingers in the right way. So at 8:15, we had made it IN the Magic Kingdom!

Will the night get better? Or are we doomed from the start??

oooooh!!! you're fun!

a trip to Disney just because of a broken arm? could you adopt me? please!?!

great TR -- loving every second of it!

oooooooh, Rhonda. So many questions. So little time. Especially after the check-in debacle. and the monorail debacle. and the line in the Kroger debacle.

But I have it on the HIGHEST authority that Wesley received quite a number of autographs on his cast.

Soon.

:) Amy

Was Mark about ready to go off? I would have definitely had to hide my minister credentials if I had run into that many delays.

But...a bad day at Disney is better than a good day at the dentist.

Wow. I hope that your wait times got better once you got in the park! I hate it when I get stuck on the monorail to the Magic Kingdom like that, and I always pick the wrong line when I'm trying to get in the park. It was almost like I was there with you ;)

So when my little man got stitches in May, I guess the new box of Legos was a little lame, huh?

Let's keep your "feel better" a little secret, OK? :thumbsup2

Great report as usual. I can't wait to hear the good stuff!

But I did want to comment on one thing for future reference. It takes approximately 14 minutes - sometimes 17 or 18 - to get to MK on the Yacht Club bus. I know, because being the geek that I am, I timed it. No stop at the TTC, no waiting on a monorail - takes you right to the Magic Kingdom. I was sceptical of the bus system too, but we decided we'd never go back to driving ourselves. Might want to give it a "whirl" ;) next time. It's not as bad as you expect it to be.

Again - loving your report! And it's especially great now that we have met! Looking forward to the rest.

NM

Eek thta's way to long to wait to check in!

I hope the line ups get much much shorter from here on out.

Just wanted to let everyone know WHY we don't do Disney buses. It is not so much of a time issue (although it did take us an hour on a Disney bus to get from BWI to MK once). It is more the having to lug everything out of the stroller and fold it up issue. Not such a problem when you're headed TO wherever you're going... but at night, when you've crammed all kinds of junk down there in addition to whatever you brought with you in the first place, and having to possibly pull a sleeping child out of the stroller to fold it up... ugh. That's why we don't do buses. And why we TRY not to do trams! :smooth: So NM...when we get rid of the stroller (in, what, 6 more years?? LOL!), I promise, we'll try the bus again! :thumbsup2

Yay! The whirlwind trippers strike again.

But, DANG, that's an oh-so-not-fun-reason that instigated the trip.

I'm glad you guys live so close and go so often. It gives me something to read on a regular basis.

Can't wait to read more!

Day 1, Part 2: I’m ashamed of myself  (and beware: I use a lot of these … in this episode!)

It’s after 8pm, but we’re IN the MK! And we’re starving. Those double cheeseburgers from Wendy’s seemed a really, really long time ago. And they had been. About 7 hours ago. I must say, Wesley had not even complained of being hungry. But the first order of business was food. Pecos Bill’s sounded good to both of us. We stopped in front of El Pirata y Perico (I’m guessing on the spelling) to get our EMH wristbands… the line was much shorter there than at the park entrance. And by the way, has anyone ever been to WDW when El P y P was actually open? We have been in all 12 months of the year (or we will have been, when we go in Oct this year). And I have never, not once, seen it open. Not in the last 6 years or so, anyway. If they’re not going to open it… what a waste of space! Think how much more Johnny Depp merchandise they could sell in there! Or they could turn it into the character greeting area for Peter, Wendy, Hook and Smee. Disney NEEDS me and my ideas. Really.

Back to the meal… Wesley and I found a table in Pecos Bill’s while Mark went to order. When we eat counter service, Wesley ordinarily eats an Uncrustables (which we bring with us) and drinks juice boxes. Not JUST because we’re cheap. Actually, he really likes them. And he thinks they are a TREAT. Just ask him. Wesley, What’s your favorite thing to eat at Disney World? Round peanut butter and jelly sandwiches!! Makes me wonder why we spend $60 (or more) on a character meal. Oh, right. It’s not for the food. It’s for the characters! So never mind. Wesley eats his Uncrustables and has a juice box. Or was it orange soda? Don’t remember. And he ate a little package of Chips Ahoy cookies. All before Mark got to the table with our food. Mark finally arrived with his double cheeseburger and my chicken wrap. With cheese sauce for my fries. Cause that is some goooooood stuff. And the only time I ever eat it is at WDW.

After all this time (it is now nearing 9pm), Wesley is ready to ride something! And so are we! We take our handy dandy little fast passes, a gift, if you recall, from OUR Wendy (which are, sadly, quickly running out), and head to BTMRR. Pecos Bill’s, then BTMRR. Always a great combination, don’t you think? With FPs, we waited about 10 minutes. Not bad, since the standby line was 50 minutes or so. Wesley squealed and cackled and didn’t bang up his arm one bit! (We had it cushioned in Daddy’s tummy, LOL!) I absolutely adore riding this with him. ADORE it, I say! :goodvibes

By now Spectro has started, so we’re using the parade avoidance walk-way to get to Haunted Mansion. Wesley wanted to show the entrance CMs his hitchhiking ghost impression, but there was no entrance CM. A minor disappointment. But in we go. A good time was had by all.

Toon Town isn’t open during EMH. Which meant no Barnstormer ride, if we didn’t go right now. So we bypassed all of Fantasyland, much to Wesley’s initial dismay. But as I’ve said, we’ve trained him right. As we passed Peter Pan, he said, Wow, a 50 minute wait! We don’t want to do THAT! Right you are, buddy boy! Onward to Toon Town! Barnstormer was pretty much a walk-on. Very nice! Wesley probably cackles and squeals on this, too, but I’ve only ridden it with him once. He prefers to ride with Daddy. It’s their “thing”. I don’t mind, really. I just sit behind them and occasionally take pictures.

We decided that we should hit the princess room next. After all, the line was much shorter than it normally is. And here is where I began to act like those “OTHER” parents. We forgot that, although Wesley LOVES the characters… it does take him a bit of time to warm up, so to speak. And historically, he has preferred the fur characters, because they don’t *talk* to him. There are exceptions, of course. Because he does love Princess Aurora, as you all know. And Peter Pan and Wendy are usually special cases, too. But insisting on seeing face characters when we’d been in the park for less than two hours was probably not one of the smartest things we’ve ever done. For some reason, he had it in his head that everyone, characters included, were going to make fun of his cast. I have a suspicion of where that came from… (NOT from us, or from our house)… but we were trying to overcome that… trying to help him understand that when people ask him about his arm, they aren’t making fun of him at all… they are just concerned, and maybe just want to know what happened to him. At this point, however, he was still in the “they’re going to make fun of me” mode. We get in the room, and there are Aurora, Cindy and Snow White. But it was a no go. Oh, he went up to them, all right… he allowed them to hug him… he allowed pictures to be made. But he did not say a word. To ANY of them. And the pictures are… less than stellar. And we didn’t get a single cast signature. We didn’t want to do it if he wasn’t really into it, you know?

So here’s where we are. Wesley took a 30 minute nap, when we were hoping for a 2 hour nap. We’d done a lot of waiting, just to GET to the MK. Then we’d waited a fair while to get into the princess room. To see princesses that Wesley didn’t really even want to see. We were all feeling a little less than magical. Or at least, I was. And I think Wesley was, too. Now this was better than the last trip, for sure, when Mark was sick when we arrived, and Wesley was sick the rest of the time. But still… not quite the magic I’d been hoping for. :guilty:

Wesley had requested to see the 11pm Spectro parade (he even knows what times the parades are… why does Disney not pay my child??) So by now it is time to find a good spot. (We skipped Wishes, to do the ToonTown stuff. Sacrilege, I know!) It was about 10:40, and we were pleasantly surprised at how empty things were beginning to feel. Still a lot of people… but most of them were not waiting for the parade! Mark went in search of a diet Coke. Or water. Or something. Wesley and I stayed to guard our spot. And this is when I get really frustrated with Wesley. For quite some time, he had not been listening to things we were telling him. And at this point, he was sitting with his feet out in front of him. And people… BIG people (meaning, adults)… were walking right in front of us. We were behind the parade rope, but his feet were sticking out a bit. I asked him four times to move his feet. He didn’t. One particularly large person, not paying attention, was inches from stepping squarely on Wesley’s feet. He would have, had I not grabbed Wesley and pulled him back. I am AT Disney World! I am SITTING in Frontierland! I am about to watch SPECTROMAGIC! Why on earth am I so grumpy?? But I was sure giving him what for! Mark got back. And took Wesley to the restroom. While they were gone, I managed to calm down and gain a little perspective. This sort of thing happens to other people, not to me! When they returned, I helped Wesley into his Peter Pan tunic and hat, and snuggled him in my lap and apologized for being so mean to him. Then he said, It’s okay, Mommy. And I’m sorry I did all those things I shouldn’t have done, too. I will try to listen better now. Dang. I’m supposed to cry HAPPY tears at WDW! Tears of joy! NOT mean-mommy-guilty tears!

I know. You can’t believe it. The Whirlwind Trippers have now been at the MK for almost 3 hours, and no magic. I can’t believe it, either. Have we lost our touch?

The parade begins. Am I the only person who thinks the beginning of Spectro is creepy-dee? NM? I know you love this parade… do the clown/doll/instrument-playing/whirling whatever they ares not kind of freak you out? Because they do me. But once they go by, I really enjoy Spectro. Tink must’ve realized my need for pixie dust. I think she dumped a pound or two on us!

Fauna and Merryweather blew him kisses. As did Ariel and Cinderella. And Dopey. And Gepetto. And the White Rabbit. The Queen of Hearts came over to shake his hand. The Queen (Snow White) saw him and turned around to tell Captain Hook. Hook crossed the float and shook his hook menacingly. Peter saw him and waved, but couldn’t come over to him (time to do a little dance step). But at the end, something happened that had never happened before. Snow White saw him from the middle of the street. She came over to him, even though, like Peter, I don’t think she was supposed to at that time. She gave him a big kiss  , then ran to catch up. Wesley BEAMED. Thanks Tink! This was just what we needed!

We’ve had some magic, we’re feeling better… a perfect time to do one of our all-time favorites: PhilharMagic. We did have to wait a little while, but it wasn’t terrible. Wesley was a little concerned that he wouldn’t be able to conduct with Mickey at the end, because of his arm. We assured him it was fine to conduct with one arm. He did, and it was as cute as ever!

Then we found that some characters were out, but Wesley was being particularly choosy, and would only agree to see Goofy and Donald. He was still a little shy, and worried about them making fun of him, for whatever reason. And then our BAD PARENT side came out again. And we both uttered words that I never thought either of us would utter at WDW: Well, if you don’t want to see any characters, maybe we’ll just CANCEL the princess breakfast in the morning! Which led to crying by Wesley. Which led to more guilt by us. Which, admittedly, we deserved. What is WITH us?? :guilty:

Then things got better again. We headed towards Buzz, which had a terribly long line~we didn’t care to wait in it. So we thought we’d just see what the line for Pirates looked like… expecting it to be really long, as well. But it wasn’t! We basically walked on! It was fun to see the changes… I think Wesley liked the old version better, though.

A quick stop for some lemonade, and we went back to Tomorrowland, where the wait for Buzz was now a much more manageable 5 minutes. At the very end of the scoring opportunity, we got stopped. Mark was able to get his all-time best score. 994,000-ish, I believe. And now it’s 1:30. And we know that Wesley has been extremely good, especially since he’d been up for 18 hours, with only a 30 minute nap. Which made us feel even worse about the way we’d treated him.

Back to the car (there was a tram at the TTC when we got off the monorail. We were back at our car before the tram ever left the front of the TTC!), and a short trip back to the YC. I was the last one in bed, around 2:30.

We all went to sleep hoping that tomorrow would be a REALLY MAGICAL Disney day! :wizard:

Oh dear. That didn't seem to go as planned at all.

Still sounds like you did have some fun and the score on Buzz is pretty impressive.

Hope a good nights sleep helps and the princess breakfast restores you all to a good mood! :wizard:

Rhonda (and Mark) - we all have those days. I think whatever beating up you do to yourselves is far worse than any of us would even THINK of doing to you.

I live in a glass house, you see. And those stones, well, I'm NOT willing to even nudge them the teensiest bit. Even. EVER.

So glad you found some pixie dust finally.

BUT, I still haven't seen a PICTURE of the cast. And I know that Mark keeps the camera at the ready. What's up with that?

I have enjoyed reading your & your DH's reports- even though I don't comment near enough  I really felt what you went through from this one. I am glad you found some magic especially for poor little Wesley.

Keep it comin'!
