Which tax software/site do you use?

I have used H & R Taxcut for years and have never had any problems. It's extremely easy to use. :goodvibes

I used to use H&R Taxcut, but had a problem one year when some sort of software they had rejected my state return and refused to eFile it, without giving any sort of error message (despite it passing all of the online checks when I prepared it). When I contacted their customer service, they were downright rude about it, unable to explain the error and treating me like I was doing something wrong although they couldn't tell me what that might be! Then they tried to blame the problem on the state and only after push back from the state did they admit it was a software module on THEIR end that rejected the return. I only did my state return with them because I wanted to efile (State return is simple to fill out once my Federal return is done) and had to FIGHT to get them to refund the cost for that. After that whole fiasco, I swore off H&R forever.

I use www.freefillableforms.com for my federal return. I pencil and paper the forms myself (I know that's a minority), but then use the website for filing. Has worked great for the last three years for me.

This is what I've been using the last few years also! Works good if you know what you're doing with your taxes and don't need any help. Last year I missed a couple deductions though and found out from someone who used one of those other programs like TurboTax (she said it flagged her and said she could get a certain deduction). So, I'm thinking I'll try something else this year or just be extra careful. Last year I filed an amended return and got the rest of my refund later (because I found the mistakes after I filed the first time).

Actually, you can eFile your Federal return for free on Taxact.com. (See their front page: "Free to Prepare; Free to Print; Free to eFile" and in small print at the bottom: "State Additional") The charge kicks in only if you elect to prepare and file your State return through them.

In my case, I do my Federal only through TaxAct, then eFile my State return for free on our state's website. So I efile both returns for free!

Do you start your return from scratch every year or am I missing something? I think there is a nominal fee to rollover data at taxact (which I am willing to pay so I don't have to re-enter everything every year).

Nope, I've never been charged to import my previous year's data into the current year's return. I love TaxAct. Much cheaper than TT, and the refund amounts were the same at least for me.
