In one episode Lisa says that while it may seem ambiguous, there are clues in the show to let you know which Springfield the Simpson's live in.

Do you know which one? And how did you figure it out?

I don't know the answer.

I thought it was a mixture of them all since they are near almost every natural feature (ocean, mountains, desert etc).

The creators are deliberately vague on the subject. They will never reveal the location of springfield.

Right, but Lisa said you "CAN" figure it out if you get the clues.

My kids have often wondered this & when they learned of a Springfield in IL they immediately thought that was it, but since then we have discovered there is also a Springfield in NJ. Goodness only knows how many more Springfields you guys have.........too confusing:confused3

I've heard Springfield, MO, but obviously there's no ocean nearby. I friend of mine used to work at a tv station with a guy who was Matt Groening's cousin. The guy looked and acted like Homer--scary.

I've always thought it was Springfield, Massachusetts because one of the animators on the show is from Chelmsford, MA and has drawn in some local landmarks. ?Maybe? :confused3

Could Lisa have been being sarcastic?

I guess that is quite possible. But the Simpson's "hide" tons of stuff that you only see after many viewings.

BTW, to whoever said Springfield MA, I don't think so...... the accent would be too obvious! :teeth:

BTW, my ex supervisor is the nephew of David Mirkin, the Simpson's producer... maybe I'll get him to see if their is an answer! I forgot all about that.

The answer should be easy to figure out with just a little research. There can't be that many Springfields founded by Jebediah Springfield (and his silver tongue) ;)

I grew up in Springfield, NJ. I doubt if it is that one.

It's just Springfield, USA. Groening chose the name because it's generic and there are quite a few. it's cool that it's been incorporated into the show as a running gag.

I found this on a website:
There are 34 towns and cities with the name “Springfield” in the United States, according to the Rand McNally Commercial Atlas (2000)

I have read that every state has a Springfield and that is why they picked that name.

My gosh, doesn't it get confusing with having so many Springfields:confused3

Would you rather live in Springfield or Hicksville?

While I agree that it's supposed to be anytown, USA, Matt Groening is from Oregon and there have been lots of tidbits in the shows referring back to Oregon. And there is, of course, a Springfield, OR. :sunny:

I'm in Springfield, IL and I can guarantee that they don't live here. I am sure I would remember Marge's blue hair!
