Depends on how silly "we" are. I don't think I'm part of "we."

I actually grew up with friends named Tiffany, Melanie and Kelly. (Tiff, Mel, and Kel.) No different than Margaret, Helen, and Esther...or Linda, Carol, and Patricia. Some names are just more common at different times.

How about Condoleezza? That's one I hadn't heard before. Seems to have worked out okie-dokie for her.

I can't remember what show it was, it was a 20/20-Dateline-Primetime kind of show, but they actually discovered that some employers would throw away resumes from people who have names like Moqueesha, Diontina, etc. Does anyone remember this??

I've never seen the show you are referring to, but I know that definitely happens. Mary and Sally call for a job and get interviews, Moqueesha and Shanika call and they're told the position is filled. Its unfortunate but it happens all the time.

For the record, I never used the word "trashy".

Nor did I use the word "unintelligent" which another poster extrapolated from my post.

However, there is a book called Freakonomics, which shows a statistical correlation between low-incomes and oddly-spelled names (i.e. the lower the income, the more unusual the spelling of the name.) This is not my personal claim, merely a statistical correlation.

There is no denying that words have connotations. Naming a child is a parent's first responsibility and it is a huge one. Societies' perception of your child will, in many ways, be shaped by his or her name. Like it or not, we perceive a Tiffany differently than we do a Margaret. There have been numerous sociological studies that demonstrate this.

Whether it ought to be is another debate, but the fact remains, we do make assumptions about people based on their names (and for all you who will swear up and down that you don't, yes you do. If I told you my name was Ye Bin Mok, you would not leap to the initial conclusion that I was, say, Swedish.)

Anyway, if I am skeptical of the child's name, it is a reflection on the parents, not the child. A child's name will ultimately be the property and responsibility of the child (to live up to, or to live down). It should not be the outlet for the parents to express their own "creativity", "imagination", "uniqueness" or whatever they want to call it.

I never said "YOU" called it trashy, I just listed all the names that people who named their children untraditional names were called on this thread.

I'm not sure who decided what we "should" name are children anyway. And, I certainly wouldn't judge anyone by their name. That's just as bad as being judging by race IMO. So Tiffany and Emily would be judged the same by me, but I'm not a judgmental person. I didn't know when you give birth you should have to dig deep into a hidden meaning or if someone would judge me as a parent for their name. Just incredible. I'm done. have fun.
Just don't forget everyone, give your newborns a "TRADITIONAL" name, whatever that is or you will be whatever you will be @@. Oh, and spell it "correctly".

This is also very true! I was born in the mid-70s, and I swear at times I felt like I was the only girl in school not named Heather, Jennifer, or Amy. :rotfl: And these days, hardly any girls have those names!

I really like Grace without the y. With the y it reminds me of the Haunted Mansion.

My dd is Katherine Grace. It took me the whole 9 months to decide on a spelling for Katherine - I like Catherine the best, but we were always planning on exclusively calling her Kate, and Cate is too trendy for me.

My DD12 is Catherine Grace! She goes by Catherine except some of her friends call her Cat.

Beth, I think whatever name you decide for your little angel is completely up to you and your husband. Only the 2 of you have to be comfortable with what you want to call her. Hopefully the next 7 months will go by quickly!!
