Like most people I prefer the traditional way, and I like it without the hyphen. :)

Our son has a hyphenated name so I thought it would be perfect to give our daughter one too.
Just curious do you call your son the whole thing all the time? Or have you shortened it to just the first name. For example, if he's Jim-Bob, do you just call him Jim? Or Bob? Or JB? Just wondering because I would assume that if I had a child with a hypenated name I'd drop the second one because it would be too long. Thus, my argument for first name Ariel, middle name Grace. No hypens.

Please, oh please, use the traditional spelling and ditch the hyphen.

My niece's name is Kyrstyne. Give up :confused3 ? It's pronounced Kirsten. No one ever spells or pronounces it correctly. She's 18 and is sick to death of having to correct people. She's not thanking her parents for their "creativity" with a perfectly simple name.

I truly feel sorry for those children whose parents do this to them :(

Don't feel sorry for them. My daughter always loved the unique spelling of her name. Not everyone is the same.

I know that. But I've also known a lot of people who have hated their "trendy" names, too.

I like Grace.

Personally (and I know everyone's different), I think non-traditional spellings can look..... unclassy, for lack of a better word. I wouldn't want that to be the first impression people have of my children!

Unclassy?

I would go with Grace if that is how you want it pronounced.

If I saw Gracye -- I would pronounce it Gray cee.

Then again it drives my poor DD nuts that no one can seem to pronounce her name correctly due to everyone using different spellings/pronounciations.

Her name is Carolyn -- I thought it was pretty basic and obvious how to prounounce it with the LYN at the end. She is forever being called CaroLINE because of people who spell it Carolyn and pronounce it with "line". I also know people who use the CaroLINE spelling but say Carolyn -- just to confuse us poor souls who have a hard enough time with names to guess which pronounciation it's going to be. :rotfl2: Apparently Caroline is really popular now because everyone wants to call her that. I also had people wanting to shorten it to either Carol or Lyn (umm...no those are 2 seperate names completely different from Carolyn).

Of course, it took me FOREVER to realize Sean was actually pronounced "shawn/shaun" -- I would have pronounced it like rhyming with bean. I only realized it in high school when looking at a print-out of the actors in a play & I knew who the guy was but his name was spelled Sean.

In the end, it doesn't matter what you name them, there will be problems one way or another with the names. It will work for your family. I'm surprised you haven't run into any problems with the hyphens in comptuer programs yet since your son has one but that's a good thing. My maiden name is a "Mc" name that is supposed to have 2 lines underneath the c but thanks to computers that basically was dropped -- you can't add 2 lines under the c in computers.

I agree - that's not the best choice of word. Tacky, is what I usually think when I see a "creative" name. Or honestly, just immature. Like the names little girls come up with to name their dolls or imaginary babies. When I see a name like "Britnee Shay-lynne" or "Kayleigh BreeAnne", I think the mother must be 16.

I feel badly for these girls when they grow up. Who is going to take you seriously when your name is some random concoction of syllables? I know I don't. These cute little baby girls are going to be grown women trying to get jobs some day.

well, I guess everyone has their own opinion and I'm not saying every name looks good spelled *untraditionally*, but I have never in 19 years heard anyone say anything but nice things about the spelling of my daughter's name.
It will be great for her career when she's a famous photographer and her name isn't spelled like the other millions of Christinas :teeth:.

As someone who has her first name mis-spelled 95% of the time, I vote for Ariel Grace. It's annoying to constantly have to tell people how to spell your name. I love both names, btw!
