Ok, here's a question for true WDW fans.

Space Mountain has two tracks: Alpha and Omega.

Alpha is to your left as you enter. Omega is to your right. Lots of folks probably don't realize it but the tracks are different. Alpha is more hills and drops. Omega is more curves and spirals. DD and I both prefer Omega. DW prefers Alpha. How about you?

Hi Steve, as I mentioned on your trip report, I didn't know about the tracks being different as I always go to the right. Now that I know, I'm dying to try the Alpha side as I prefer hills and drops on coasters usually. :hyper: Can't wait, thanks for the info!

I don't usually like the drops on coasters, but after riding Omega, I definitely think Alpha is more to my liking. I was shocked by the tight sprial that seemed to go on forever on the Omega track. I just felt like Alpha gave me more of an adrenaline rush and Omega made me feel unsettled.

I've read many times that the tracks are different, and I've read just as many times that they are simply mirror images of eachother. Last time I rode SM I asked the CM at the end, and she assured me that the tracks are just mirror images of eachother. I like them both!

Although we have ridden both sides many times... I just didn't realize that they were different. I believe that we have ridden the left side of the ride for the last several years. Not sure why, it's just been that way. On thursday morning... around 8:05, I will be trying the right side again. Thanks for the info!!!

I thought the tracks were pretty similar, with some small differences to fit them together....
That said, I prefer the left, or Alpha side - It seems slightly darker & the drops slightly bigger.

Hey miste76!!!! I'll be there with you on Thursday at 8:05! Look for the guy with the darker (not lime) green backpack who is acting like a 'kid in a candy store' dragging his family member sto Space Mountain on our first day at Disney! We arrive in Orlando tomorrow evening.

I don't have a track preference. As long as I'm there, I'm riding it and my family hasn't beat up the commando yet, IT'S ALL GOOD!

I voted "I didn't know they were different." I'll have to check this out on our next trip!

Voted did not know they were different. I have read quite often, on various sites, including one devoted to the various Space Mts in the various parks, and their differences, that the one at WDW, both left and right were identical other than one being several few feet longer near the end as the treack of it passes overhead of the other and needs a few more fet of lift. I always read mirrors of each other.

I like Alpha. Matterhorn at DL is the same way. One track is slightly longer than the other. The longer track is more winding, and the shorter track is more up and down (I am doing this from memory, so I thinkI have them right!)

All of these little things are interesting, aren't they?

we always thought the tracks were different but then read from a few sources that they were similar...except one track was a few meters longer...

either way, we try to go on the right, it does feel like the dips are longer :hyper:

I didn't know they were different. I always thought they were mirrors of each other. I know the DL Paris Space Mountain was scarier than the WDW one. I think I would prefer the Alpha one because I like hills and drops better than spinning around.

Hmmmm......I bet this is why I felt sick to my stomach the second time I rode SM. I couldn't figure out why because I was fine the first time.

But I can't remember which side I rode either time. Does anyone know which side would be better for folks who get car sick easily?

My DW, who rode SM for the first time in 14 yrs, declares that the right side was "rougher" than the left (We rode both, back to back). The only thing I know is one side turns right at the beginning and the other side turns left!! After that, it's all good. But I would have to go with the mirror image thing if I had to guess.

Hmmm....I wonder if I could take a few days off work again and go check it out.....guess not, need paycheck.

It would depend on what type of motion tends to get you queasy. If spinning is the problem, then avoid Omega (the right track). That has a pretty intense and long downward spiral. Alpha is more little up and down types of hills - the kind where your butt lifts up out of the seat. If I had to guess, I'd say that one would be less likely to get you sick (but that's coming from someone who doesn't get motion sick).
