I will be taking my 11 y/o DD by myself, yep, just the two of us. She is not a big eater, though she is mostly considered an adult in the restaurants. I realize that I can ask for the kid's meal at a larger price and that's fine, but she's only going to eat chicken nuggets, pizza, and hot dogs so much. What restaurants would it be frowned upon for us to share an appetizer and meal? I do not want to waste food and money meal after meal. When the two of us go out to eat now, we will get our own drinks but share a meal and get separate desserts. Can I do this at any restaurants or is there another option?

The only problem you will have is at buffets and plated restaurants that charge anyone over 10 as an adult. If it is a regular menu restuarant she can order off the childrens menu or you can share. I have done both with no problem. My 13 year old is very happy with kids chicken fingers.

She sometime just orders an appitezer for dinner and sometimes we share.

It is still kills me to pay for as an adult at Chef Mickeys where she will eat 3 chincken nuggets - but I still do It because I love the restaurant.

Yeah, I knew like for the buffets I would have to bite the bullet and pay for her. Chef Mickey's is always a must and we're trying Crystal Palace this time too. I don't really care how much or little she eats there. It's always worth it. She would do better with family style, but I was thinking a little along the lines of Prime Time 50's or something like that. We will not be eating at Le Cellier but I just hate to pay a large price for a plated meal and then either eat myself sick or watch it be wasted b/c she just can't make a dent in it. This will be the first time she has been considered as an adult for meal purposes. She got tired of the same thing on the children's menus last year and sometimes I ate what she got and she ate out of my plate, just so she wouldn't turn into a chicken nugget, pizza or hot dog. Thanks so much you are very helpful.

DD(26) and I shared a burger platter at B & C and they even split it for us and
brought it to the table on separate plates. Those burgers are so huge, it was
just enough for both of us! Then we had room to share a sundae!:thumbsup2
I think the bill only came to approx. 26 bucks! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

That's great. I don't mind to pay the money, but I'd like to see that it's not totally wasted. I'll tip well and we'll even be able to get dessert if we can share some meals or just get an appetizer. Most of the places where we'll have ADR's will be character meals anyway, so it'll be family style or buffet.

Has anyone been told they could not do that?

DH and I do it all the time. We have even done it at nice places like Jinko's. We like to try differnet foods so we share and don't waste! There is only so much I can eat in a meal and still have room for desserts and my favorite snacks!!:goodvibes

At any Disney table service "order off the menu" restaurants, you can split meals with no problem. Just tell your server that "she and I will be sharing *fill in the blank*" and that's it.

But be careful. My husband and I did that once with a simple burger and fries, mainly because we didn't each want a full order of fries. We got the burger split nicely on two different plates but then they gave each of us a full order of fries! Sometimes Disney can be a little too nice!

This makes me feel better. We did the DDP in '06 for free and honestly, we wasted so much food. By the middle of the week, we would either ask for only one appetizer and/or dessert to share rather than 3 of each. We were miserable after dinner the first two or three nights. That was free and I felt bad, so with it actually coming OOP (b/c we won't be doing the DDP this time) would be worse.

Are you going to be on the DDP or paying OOP? If you are paying out of pocket then I do not think that any of the table service places would have an issue with her ordering off of the childs menu. If you are on the DDP then that could be an issue but someone else would need to speak to those details. I know that in Nov of 2005 we traveled with friends of our that had a 13yr old daughter at the time that is very small for her age and she had no problem ordering off the kids menu when she wanted. We were paying out of pocket and some places gave her one of each menu so she could decide which way she wanted to go.

On my last trip, we were at the Liberty Tavern, and the table next to us had 6 people, but only ordered 4 meals. The waitress happily brought extra plates. :goodvibes

We share meals all the time and have never had any problems. Disney's portion are so large. We are going next year (2009) and DS will be 10. We will be on the DDP and he and I will be sharing meals. Neither he nor I can eat a full adult meal (ordered off the menu). WDW is so used to people sharing meals, that they will split the meal in the kitchen for you.

I will probably pay OOP, though the last time we were on the DDP. I have struggled going through all of the menus to find something that she would eat. I feel better knowing that she can get something from the kid's menu, an appetizer or we can share a plate if need be. Without DH going this time, we won't have a need to have a table service meal so often. We can do a lot of counter service.

At counter service you can also order a kids meal no problem if you are paying OOP. On our last trip there were times when I was not that hungry for lunch and just ordered something from the kids menu.

That's great to know. Thanks!

I will also add that the new kids meals are not all burgers and fries. DS 4 did not have a single chicken nugget or plate of mac and cheese on our entire trip (at his choice). He at mahi mahi at Kona, grilled chicken strips at Whispering Canyon, and all sorts of other different foods.

That's good to know too. While my child has gone for months and wanted only one thing to eat, that was when she was much smaller and doesn't do that anymore.

I think about the only place you'd get a funny look is V & A's - and that's just cause they have banned kids ten and under. Otherwise the sharing idea is great. Disney won't officially sanction sharing if you are on the dining plan, but they allow it otherwise.

Hi

Yep, you'll be fine at all the table services and if your daughter wants to eat off the kids menu, just ask your server for one....my 12 year old did at a number of restaurants on our recent trip.
