I have only used Hertz in the past and just wondered what your experience has been like with other agencies. I would like to do some price comparisons, but not with a company that is difficult to deal with. Any thoughts are appreciated.
I can only speak for Alamo and National because they are the only two I use. I love being able to go up the aisles and pick out the car I want. I have been lucky a few times and there were some nice upgrades in the aisles. Have had great luck with both of these companies.
We've used Alamo a lot in the past and had great luck. We also like having the freedom to choose what car we want. Sadly, I can't find a good August rate with them so we're going to try Enterprise this trip.
National, with Emerald Aisle service and an employer-negotiated rate that is always at least reasonably competitive, and that can be used by employees and their spouses/partners for leisure travel as well as business.
I've used other agencies, but my preferred one is Hertz, mostly because of their Prestige and Fun Collection vehicles. Being a Gold member means I just go to the board, find my name and go to my vehicle, so it's quick and painless. Now that they're on site that makes it even better.
Anyone ever used Avis? We are planning to rent a minivan and I am looking at Avis right now (renting in NC) as they seem to have the best rates and vehicles (Toyota Sienna). Any other advice / suggestions?
Avis and National are the two I use. I have both the Emerald Aisle pick-up and the Avis Preferred. They save time and hassle. With Avis, I use our employer's discount code, so I end up with MUCH better rates than I've been able to find with National the last couple of years.
I've rented Avis at MCO, TPA, Cape Canaveral, and Vero Beach without a bit of problem.
I've always used the Hertz location at the Orlando Airport Marriott; they have great rates for Auto Club members, and I've never saved less than $125.00 on a one-week rental on a full-size car vs. getting inundated with 'junk fees' at the airport.

Interesting. Do you use the Marriott shuttle, a Hertz shuttle or do you have to take a taxi? I didn't realize rental agencies in airport area hotels were exempt from the "junk fees".
edited to add I just checked. Hertz says they're not allowed to provide transportation to and from the aiport to this location. You may be able to find better rates at this location but the "junk fees" are about the same Rentals at the airport are charged an airport concession fee and a customer facility fee. The fee for both is just over 13%. Rentals at the hotel are charged a Hotel Concession Fee Recovery which is just over 13%. Surcharges or energy, licensing etc are the same % from either location.
I prefer National (with Emerald Aisle). I've always had great service from them. Avis and Enterprise are tied for second place in my "book". I've had the worst service from Dollar, and so-so experiences with Hertz.
