Hello

Trying to decide between the Scholastic phonics books and tapes program and the Hooked on Phonics program.

If anybody has any feedback on either program or if someone anyone can compare the two or point me to a website or some resource with reviews on the programs I would appreciate it!!!

Thanks

Personally, I love the Scholastic brand. I've come to trust what they put out.

As for the programs itself, I help in a reading readiness classroom. We use Wilson extensively.

You may not be able to get Wilson, but I can vouch for that. My students went up from a 3./3.5 RL (reading level) to a 5.6/6 RL (reading level) in one school year.

The numbers correlate with the school year, technically.
Since my students were 6th graders they were not at or near grade level!

Its actually very easy to teach!

thank you Cindy.

I am mainly trying to teach my daughter the word families at the moment. She is four. She knows all her letters and can read small words. It is really tough to pick programs. I will try to see if they sell Wilson on ebay.

I am a certified Wilson Tutor. The program works wonderfully but is a big committment in the area of time and money. For more information go to www.wilsonlanguage.com

I don't believe you are looking for something this intensive but you may get some good information on the website.

The numbers DO NOT correlate with the school year but most kids make significant gains on this program.

Wow, another recommendation for Wilson. I had never even heard of it before today. Went to the website.

Thanks so much

I didn't care for either of those programs. HOP was way too boring for my guys. We liked alphphonics. Simple, and inexpensive. We used their readers and the BOB books once the sounds were learned. good luck!

eta: was not including Wilson (?). Never have tried it.

where can I find alphphonics products?

thanks

I ordered from rainbowresource.com. The book isn't fluffy, but is great coverage of the basics. It runs about 25.95 in their catalog. My guys did best with minimal visual stimulation. They didn't learn that "a" sounds like "a" like in apple etc. There aren't color pictures in the catalog either! YOu might be aboe to google it for more info. Good luck!

Wilson is not a product it is a program that when done properly could take 2-3 years to get through. It is based on Orton Gillingham research done many years ago. It organizes and sequences the original research. My own child is dyslexic and most of the kids I work with are either dyslexic or the whole language approach to reading/spelling just didn't work. You will not find it in stores but can purchase the materials on the Wilson Website. The materials don't work too well if you are not trained in the method. Training takes approximately a year.

Again this is more heavy duty then most people are looking for. We use this on the kids who are really struggling with reading/spelling and have the potential to do much better. Wilson research indicates the program works best for kids/adults with average IQ, or higher, and with big discrepencies in areas of reading/spelling. The program was originally designed for adult dyslexics.

A friends daughter is having an awful time with reading. Wilson sounds awesome, but I couldn't get the link to work. Is there a list of cetified tutors available? TIA!

INteresting, I was told the number correlate. That what I get for listening to the ahem.. special ed coordinator...

I stand corrected.

I guess it SOUNDS good for presenting then.

I do agree about time. We started with 1/1A with my students this year (just to see where they are), and we got up to 6B I think. --it was either that or 6A

The students learned how to mark syllables, and use the rules to apply it reading/spelling/writing. It may seem easy to me, becasue I've been in a Wilson classroom for two years.

Sorry about the link. When I typed it originally it was at the end of a sentence so it had a period at the end

www.wilsonlanguage.com

They should be able to get a list of certified tutors in your area.

Cindy, too funny:D It does sound good doesn't it.

How old is your child Lanshark? My son is 13 and has a really bad learning disability. He's been tested many times and I'm always told, he is not dyslexic, but I am NEVER told anything more than he has a learning disability. He aces math with straight A's, but math problems are read to him. He also is quite able to comprehend various lessons, but again, it's all read to him. I'm not quite sure what reading level he would be placed at right now. He's heading into 7th grade (held back 1st year of kindergarten) and I'd probably place him 2 or 3 years behind the other kids in reading. We're more than willing to put in additional hours here at home to help him in anyway we can. We've been through several programs already (phonics did nothing for us), but the school sent home different things for him to do on the puter. I can't say any of it really helped that much, but I'm sure it all helped a little. Does that make sense? Anyway, do you think this would be a program we might be able to benefit from? Thanks!
