I am on Nexium right now but we are inbetween insurance right now (Dh's old job ending and new insurance does not begin until February) Cobra will not start until a few weeks from now.

Prilosec or Previcid

I had to switch and now use the generic Prilosec OTC, Omeprazole. It is the same as Prilosec, but way cheaper. The cheapest I have found is at Sam's Club, but you really just need to check in your area. It works fine, but if I miss a day - Oh boy!

i switched from nexium to prilosec otc as well. they're all just different forms of omeprazole. it was cheaper for me. prescription nexium cost me a $60 copay every month and the prilosec otc is only about $30.

DH takes OTC Prilosec at a double dose so he doesn't have to go to the gastroenterologist. The chemical make up is almost the same as nexium. It ends up costing more than a co-pay for nexium, but it's his decision.

I buy this at costco, at the recommendation of my GI (nexium was so expensive!). It works well - I'm dying if I skip a few days.

If you watch, you can always find coupons for Prilosec too. I have one lying around for $5 off. I bet you can print it online at coupons.com or something similar.

I've been using Prilosec as an alternative for years. I've gotten to where I don't have to take it every single night now thankfully.

There shouldn't be a gap between your company insurance coverage and COBRA, that is the whole point of COBRA--why do you think there is a gap in coverage?

At work ( I work in a hospital) we switch people from Nexium IV (same as oral) to oral prilosec....

We all use Prevacid - by prescription.. Much, much cheaper than over the counter..

I worked in a pharmacy when Nexium came out- the pharmacist said that basically the only point of nexium was the patent running out on prilosec and the drug company not wanting to lost the cash.

Thanks, golfgal - that's exactly what I was going to say. The OP has sixty days to decide whether to accept COBRA, and to start paying for it - but they'd be paying retroactively and would be covered from the day the current job ends.

Also important to note, preexisting conditions (e.g. gastroenteritis) may not be covered if insurance wasn't continuous.

Our Blue Cross stopped covering Nexium awhile back, so now I take two Prilosec every morning (20 mg each and was on 40 mg Nexium) ~ there is a bit of a difference but at least I can eat. ;)

Most insurance companies will not pay for prescription once it goes over the counter, so be prepared.
