I've had the good fortune to stay at both the HOJO and CCI within a month of each other, once over spring break and again over Easter, and so the comparisons are still fresh in my mind.
Everyone here has posted solid information, and I especially like DangerMouse's list. From my perspective--child-free--it seems like CCI attracts more families with small children. I didn't perceive a big difference in the walking times between the two, so perhaps it's the CCI shuttle?
My comparisons:
HOJO
Pro:
--Efficient, professional staff; I never waited more than 2 minutes for anything; good housekeeping
--Family-friendly rooms, with lots of drawer and counter space; big bathrooms; firm beds; dorm-size fridge
--Free internet service, but you need to sit on your bed to use the ethernet; there's also free computer use at the registration desk
--Larger pool areas, two of them. Both the regular and the quiet pool attract children.
--Gift shop with some food and sundries; good hours
--Pleasant landscaping, despite the renovations currently going on
--Free parking
--Lots of opportunities for discounts
--Near family-style restaurants, especially Mimi's (of the reasonable prices and generous portions)
--Laundry facilities (Building #1, in the basement, and another building)
Cons
--Because of its proximity to the freeway, many rooms get more traffic noise; it didn't disturb me, but I'm not a particularly light sleeper
--No continental breakfast
--Cheap towels
--No exercise room
--Might seem like a long walk, dependent on who is in your party
CCI
Pros
--Efficient, professional staff; again, I never waited for service; housekeeping was even more efficient, perhaps because CCI is smaller
--Intimate grounds and parking (due to size)
--Fairly quiet rooms; good layout and counter space; decent towels; cube refrigerator; rooms might be a bit cramped for families (although certainly as spaces as some of the values/moderates at WDW)
--Continental breakfast: lots of carbs (pastries, cereals, bagels, muffins) and some fruit (apples, bananas); it offers orange juice, apple juice, milk, and bad coffee/hot chocolate. It's not memorable, but it's time-efficient and filling. You can also take breakfast back to your room--you practically have to, because there's not enough space in the dining and pool area for all guests.
--Free wireless internet, but spotty/slow in places; I was able to pick up internet at the pool area
--Good landscaping
--Small pool area, but it was never busy while I was there; I think it was sufficient for the size of the CCI/ratio of guests
--Tiny gift shop, but right next door to a gift/food shop and a 7-11
--An exercise room with one treadmill, one stationary bike, and a weight machine; I believe I was the only one to use it during my stay
--Free parking
--One laundry room, near (hopefully) sunny bench for reading
Cons
--As I said, rooms may be cramped for families--even though CCI seems to attract many families
--No real discounts (aside from
AAA, I think)
--Soft beds; I know a lot of people like soft beds. I am not one of those people.
--Is nearer more to fast-food/takeout places than to sit-down places (Subway, Pizza, Chinese Buffet)
I'd stay at either of these places again, as I enjoyed myself immensely at both. I might choose CCI if I had younger children, because of the dedicated shuttle and continental breakfast, unless I wanted to save some $$$; I think I could get a better deal with HOJO. For my next visit, though, I will look for a place with better internet service and workout facilities (in part because I don't have children).
