Which loop to choose at Fort Wilderness?!

Hello, we are a family of 6 (17-8 age range), & have booked to stay in one of the cabins at Fort Wilderness. I was wondering if you had some tips on which loop/& or cabin which would be good for us to request to stay in. I know that FW is huge, & we would like to be reasonably centrally placed for the bus stops, pools, trading post etc etc......
We can't wait to visit again, it's been 3 long years!!!! Thanks.

We have an entire forum dedicated to those that love the Fort! I am not sure how many options you have for the cabins, but I am sure they can answer any questions you have, so I am going to move this over there for you.

Every cabin loop has a bus stop nearby. (Two or three loops may share a bus stop, but the entrances to each loop are close together). The closest loop to the Main Pool is 2100. The closest loop to the quiet pool and laundry is 2500.

Cabins are in the lower portion loops 2100-2800 - which in reality is closer to the "front" Outpost/reception area of the Fort than most of the camping loops. Unfortunately that also makes them further from the main pool, trading posts and Settlement/marina, but buses run regularly! The cabin/quiet pool is over between 2500/2600/2700

It's hard to tell......so, say if we stayed in loop 2100 or 2200 (as they are between the pools (ish) & there's a bus stop in the middle, how many minutes walk would you say is there to the bus stop/pools/trading post? & further still, to the marina - or would you be looking at taking the bus for this one?!

If you look at the first few threads above, you will see a "sticky" for an interactive Google Earth map prepared by one of our illustrious fellow campers.

Using this map, you can calculate distances to anywhere in the Fort.

For example, it is about a third of a mile walk from the 2100 loop to the main pool. You pass the Meadow Trading Post as on this walk, so it's a bit closer. Here's what that path looks like on the map:

It is not a bad walk- all on sidewalks- through the beautiful campground. I see no reason to wait for a bus.

If you wanted to walk to the Settlement area, it would be a bit more of a walk, and the same with walking up to the Outpost. I would say those would be over a half mile from the 2100 loop, in opposite directions. You probably would want to take the bus to those destinations.

If there is anyway that you could bring bikes, they are great to have at the Fort. And, you should also thing about renting a golf cart- they are loads of fun!

We always request the 2100 loop, and have gotten it 2 out of 3 trips. This past Dec, we were in 2200 and it was pretty much the same - just a little bit longer to walk.

We always take the bus to either the outpost or settlement from there, but again, if we didn't have the stroller we would probably walk it most of the time.

This year for the first time, we are renting a cart!

That's a really good question! All I do know is that when we have stayed at any other Disney hotel, (WDW & in Paris) I have thought about where it looks best to have our room/lodging, then about 2 weeks before we are due to go, call ahead to reception & request our choice. We have been really lucky thus far & have been placed exactly as we wished! Good ol' Disney!
I'm guessing it's the same for FW?

Also, thanks for the google tip! DH has had the most wonderful time checking it out!!! & we may have to look at hire bikes - bringing them from the UK is going to be a little more than I can cope with!!!!!

Oh, I didn't know you were from across the pond.

The bike hiring may be a bit of a problem. The Bike Barn at the Fort only rents bikes for hourly or daily use- they must be returned each night.

You can have your loop request added to your reservation under 'special requests.' If you went through a TA, they should be able to do that for you. I have also faxed mine, but to be honest I'm not sure if that fax number is just for the campsites and the guy just tosses out cabin requests. I have never really looked into it.

I think it's pretty unusual for the cabins to be booked solid, so I hope you won't have any problem getting the loop you want!

I'm really thinking about renting and RV and driving down to the FW Campground. I am interested because I can bring our dog with my wife and I and have a different experience. The RV is a smaller 30ft. What type of campsite is best? Is preferred really better than full hook up? We want a quieter place not so much near all the "stuff". Don't mind walking or biking places. Thanks for any advice you have!!!!

Welcome to the DIS Camping Board. At 30 ft, your rv will fit on just about any Full, Preferred, or Premium site (for sure). Full and Preferred are identical with the only difference between them being location in the Fort. Preferred (where I have stayed the last few times with my popup) are loops 100, 200, and 300 and are centrally located down by the boat docks. The Full loops (1600, 1700, 1800, and 1900) are in a quieter section of the Fort and sound better suited for you. Loop 2100 was a cabin loop for years but recently was converted back to a camping Full loop.
