How do you know that a lens is "good" other than taking pics with it?

a good place for reviews of lenses is http:slrgear.com the tests and reviews include a chart that shows you how sharp a lens is throughout it's range ...also make sure you read some sites that list the lens in your mount. some mounts are better than others in a particular lens ( ie i think one of the 35 mm primes, i forget which one, everyone raves about in most mounts is only so so on canons) i think there is a nikonian site that probably has lens reviews. just like any subjective review though you kind of have to take them with a grain of salt but if everyone hates a lens it's probably a dog

but i do have a canon mount 17-50 tamron and it's a great lens
