For Photos or video or both?

Photoshop Elements = photo editing
Premier Elements = video editing

And both are great starters.

I use Elements 10 but very rare.

the best software especially for a beginner is Lightroom 4.

I ordered the package from B&H and it is a great deal. Both are great. i also use Aperture and Iphoto in a pinch.

I have Windows XP, so can't use Lightroom. I am trying to decide between Photoshop Elements 10 and Corel Paintshop Pro X4 Ultimate.

What I like is that Paintshop has a RAW lab to work on RAW photos and a bunch of different filters. And it's only $49.99 I just downloaded the trial to test it out.

Lightroom 3 should still work on Windows XP, if you can find a copy. Of course, there's a huge difference between Lightroom and the other packages. LR is a digital asset manager - and it's a good idea to have one to organize your photos. The other products will process your images, but they won't do the same job that LR will to keep things organized.

I have a question, too, if I can hijack for a second.:goodvibes

The video editing...what can you do with it? Can you take a video and cut parts out of it to make it shorter? Can you put two videos together to make one long video? Is it just taking photos and turning them into a video slideshow? Any help would be awesome!

I have PSE 8, but was thinking of upgrading to 10. I was just wondering what doing the package deal could mean for me. The only video I shoot is with my digital camera, so I'm not sure if it is a good option for me.

LR 3 does work with XP if you have all the updates. I run it on both an XP and a Win 7 machine here and it's actually faster on the XP machine.

Lightroom is a major part of my work flow for image management and RAW processing, but it doesn't take the place of Photoshop. If you can only get one piece of software, get Photoshop Elements. Adobe Camera RAW in Photoshop has the same tools for RAW processing that Lightroom does. You don't get the file management, as previously mentioned, but IMO the editing tools take precedence.

Edited to add... the question about video editing... you can cut, splice, copy, paste, make a slide show, change audio, add simple effects... etc. In Premiere Elements. Adobe has 30 day free trials on their website if you want to check it out.

Thank you for the help. :goodvibes

Thanks for all the responses folks. So, this Lightroom you speak of, is it practical to use it for management and PE for editing? I'll be honest, I know nothing about either but I hate the way my pics are managed in Picasa and Windows. I've also used the Nikon program that came with my camera and they are all cumbersome.

I use Lightroom for managing and editing and find it really easy and a great program. Im nowhere near a professional photographer so it does a great job for me. I do run some of them thru Nik Color Efex to add some extra pop lol. I do have Photoshop as well but rarely use since I picked up Lightroom. I think a lot of the basic editing you can do in Photoshop you can do in Lightroom also, with Lightroom being a little less intricate and a lot cheaper as well lol. Its a breeze importing -developing - then exporting photos using Lighroom and keeps everything very organized and also shows the original picture along with edited one on bottom scrolling window.

Lightroom works pretty seamlessly with Photoshop Elements or Photoshop CS. They were designed to integrate together well. I have both open when I edit and do my RAW processing in Lightroom then just right click and choose the option to open the image in Photoshop. IMO it's easier than the Bridge/Camera RAW/Photoshop option that a lot of people use. And way easier than using 2 or more pieces of software that weren't designed to work together for your work flow.
