Ipod Shuffle - holds up to 120 songs
Ipod Shuffle (1gig) - holds up to 240 songs
Ipod Nano - holds up to 1000 songs
Ipod Mini - holds up to 1000 songs
Ipod - holds up to 5000 songs

I have a nano, and I really like it. They are VERY small, and might not be a great choice for a 10 year old. I would think a mini would be a better choice, if you can find one. They are being replaced by the nano.

Don't get a mini - they are phasing them out. the Nano will be replacing them.

the shuffle is only nice, IMO, if you are active (ie - exercising/doing yard work)...it's not cumbersome and holds small amounts of songs.

I'd go with the nano personally..for a 10 year old, get the smaller one for now. (lord knows something "better" will come out when they are 13! heheh)

My 11 year old wants one and we are looking at the shuffle and also looking at other brands - My DH does not want to pay for a name - LOL I told him to remember what it was like at that age. What is cool is popular not what the best value is - LOL

I have the 20GB and I love it. I have a little over 1,000 songs on it, so I still have room for 4,000 more. As long as they don't mess with the iTunes format, this thing will last me forever.

I just got the iPod 30gb for our daughter who is going to be 12 next month. I literally just opened the box 5 minutes ago.

I would say the 1GB Shuffle or the Nano for a 10 year old. $300 is a LOT of money for one of these for a 10 year old, so I wouldn't really consider one of the bigger ones at this age.

Here's my two cents: I wouldn't get the shuffle because you can't control the songs you listen to.

The mini is being replaced by the Nano, but I heard (can not confirm that at all) that apple is being sued because 1 out of every 5 nano's are defective. Can anyone confirm this?????????

I think the regular IPOD is too expensive and too much tech for a 10 year old.

I would buy the IPOD for a 10 year old because it was about that age that my children started getting into CD's etc. The IPOD is actually cheaper in the long run because you can pick and choose songs from Itunes. You do n't need batteries, like in a discman, etc. When they get older you can even buy the speakers for a stereo option.

I bought the nano for myself and for my DS14 for Christmas. I would NOT buy it for a 10 year old (I'm a little nervous giving it to my son). It's got a really bad reputation for scratching easily and for the screen breaking -- which I didn't know until afterwards. If you do go with the nano, be prepared to shell out extra cash for a case. I would go with something less flashy and more sturdy.

To me, this is a very easy answer, I would go with the Ipod Mini. Here's why:

Regular Ipod: The new Ipod is expensive, and has a bunch of new tricks, such as video. While video sounds good, this is still in the early stages, and they are going to be so much better in the later versions. Personally, I got one less then 2 years ago. The screen is black and white, and the all it does is music. Eight months later a coloured screen Ipod came out that can hold pictures. Then last month the video ipod came out. I want to throw mine out and get the new one. Your 10 year old would probably be the same way. If it isn't necessary I wouldn't go with the regular Ipod.

Ipod Nano: My DH has one, and they really are nice. Also, for the "cool factor" this might be the best idea. Here are my problems however. The lawsuit diskids2 mentioned is actually about how easy they scratch, both the body and the screen. My DH takes very good care of his, and still has a few dings. I would only think a 10 year old would be much worse. Also, it is the size of a pack of gum. Cool yes, but damn it is easy to loose! Again, fears of a $250 player going through the wash, or being left behind would worry me.

Ipod Shuffle: I see no need. It has no display. It is not the best in any category. I know I am not a 10 year old so I don't know what is cool, but so many other brands have better little players for the same price.

Ipod Mini The mini, while discontinued, is still a great little player. It has a good size harddrive without left over space. The size is small, but not so small that you will loose it easily. The price is okay, and it is the strongest case, which has proven to last through the "drop test". Becuase it was just discontinued, the price is falling. A lot of people are grabbing them up. You are paying the same price for a device that holds more songs. Other pro: cool coloured cases, other con: black and white screen, which might not be so "cool."

I hate to say it, but new Ipods come out every year. I bet when your 10 year old becuase a 15 year old, no matter what you choose, he or she will want the newest one. (I know even as an adult I am the same way ) So I would invest in one that would last until then, and not cost too much.

I think it depends on the 10 year old. I was pretty, well rambunxious, so an iPod wouldn't have lasted too terribly long.

If breakage is a concern, then I would probably suggest the 1GB Shuffle. I think I had maybe 5 tapes at that age & I can't imagine that most 10 years olds would have a collection beyond 240 songs.


Another player you may want to consider is the Disney Mix Stick, it's like a Shuffle (but based on SD cards & can go up to 1GB) & they're going for $49. It might be a good starter mp3 player to see how he treats it.

I have a ten year old. He is not interested in a shuffle (no screen) or the Nano (too small he said)

He wants a mini, but they aren't really available.

He's really not interested in music that much to justify it though.
