MICKEY IS COOL

Guest
Im going on a RCL cruise to Mexican Riviara leaving from LA, and when I get back from the cruise im spending 2 nights at Disneyland. Which Hotel Should I stay at? Grand Calafornian, Paradise Pier or Disneyland Hotel? Also, if you stay at a Disneyland hotel, do park tix come with the room?

Thanx:p :jester: :bounce:

The Grand Californian Is the nicest of the DL hotels. It is located "in" the California Adventure theme park. In reality it is right next to it with its own private entrance. The rooms are a bit small but nicely decorated in darker tones with a Frank Lloyd Wright motife. The lobby is fantastic. If you have seen and liked, the Wilderness Lodge or Animal Kingdom Lodge at WDW you will be at home here as it was designed by the same architect.
The Disneyland hotel is an older three tower hotel but the rooms are, mostly, quite large. If you stay here request a room with a daybed in the Sierra Tower. The rooms are great fun with Pixie Dust border paper that glows in the dark. Bedspreads with old fashioned drawngs of Disneyland rides on them and nicely decorated bathrooms. The grounds are beautiful and the neverland pool is really fun. The walk to the monorail station is 3-7 minutes.
The Paradise Pier hotel is a two tower hotel with a bit of a beach theme and a minimal lobby and virtually no grounds. The rooms are nicely decaorate with a modern Mickey design. Theme Park view rooms here are wonderful as it is overlooking DCA.

Dumb question (don't want to cause an argument...)
if you are staying at GC can you use the pools at the
other two hotels too?

I don't know if you are staying at the Grand Californian if you can use the other pools. I know if you are at Paradise Pier you can use the Neverland pool at the Disneyland Hotel. I don't think anyone at The Grand Californian or Disneyland hotel would want to use the Paradise Pier Hotel pool. It is unremarkable in everyway other than it is on the fourth floor roof.

What are the pools like? Opinions?

I would choose DLH over GC if you're looking for Disney theming. GC looks like a very nice resort hotel, but DLH looks more "Disney." The rooms were fairly recently refurbished. The DLH pol is nicely themed and has a slide. Also, the hot tub is quite large as far as hot tubs go.

The Pool at the Grand Californian has a Redwood theme. It is free form with a fake redwood tree at its side. The slide curls around the redwood tree. The pools are in a very nicely landscape courtyard of the hotel with one end facing DCA. You can hear the music and screams from the park if it is quiet. The "quiet" pool is right next to the themed pool.
The pool at the Disneyland hotel is a Neverland themed freeform pool with skull rock, part of Captain Hook's ship and Mermaid rock. There is a slide here too. This one gets really crowded. In the back area there is the cove pool which is not really themed but is in a quiet area near some sand and trees.
The Paradice Pier hotel pool is a regtangular pool on the roof of part of the hotel where the shops and conference rooms are. It ia a big peice of cement with some potted plants. You have views of the hotel and the parking structure. There is a great spot on one side though to watch the Disneyland fireworks from.

Oh my!! They all sound so nice!

<font color=navy>We go to DLR a lot, sometimes just to hang out at Downtown Disney. I often see guests in their suits & towels either headed to or coming back from the Disneyland Hotel pool, so I would feel safe to guess that you can pool hop between the three pools.

I was at the Paradise Pier hotel not too long ago, and you take the elevator to the third floor to access the roof-top pool. It's nice, but not themed - however, if you want a quiet place, you might consider it -- it faces the west, away from the parks, so your view would be the parking lot and the Disneyland Hotel (if you were to go to the perimeter wall to look out).

I've stayed at both the Disneyland and Grand Californian, and it's hard for me to say which hotel I prefer. I like them both very much for different reasons.

The Grand Californian has a more luxurious feel to it, and has an ambience of a lodge with its use of dark wood, lobby with high ceiling, etc. One of the things that I prefer in this hotel is that there is a lobby that welcomes you to relax and take a breather. There is a pianist in the afternoons, a huge fireplace, and a lounge right there, too. The Disneyland hotel doesn't really offer that. Yes, there is a small area to sit in the three towers, but no real place to congregate and just visit. I love to people watch in the lobby of the Grand Californian. And, when I was in a city view standard room (4101), I could leave my door ajar & listen to the piano, or go to the third floor where there is a little sitting area, and go there. It was nice. The Grand Californian also has a nice balcony where you can go outside and sit at a table & relax. (I've stayed in a room with a city view that looks out towards DL & PP hotels, and I've stayed in a room with a view of Downtown Disney). The pool has already been described, and I would recommend it for a fun pool (with slide), and without the big crowds.

The Disneyland Hotel has rooms with a lighter look to them - kind of like staying in a room on Main Street - at least, that's the feel I get when I go. The wood is lighter, and the decor is a little more whimsical. I also like the set-up of the rooms. We stayed in the Bonita Tower (I've also stayed at the Marina before the rooms were refurbished, back in '95), and were over the waterfalls, looking out through the pine trees - which I really liked. The sliding door opens and there is a tiny landing with a railing that allows you to barely step out of your room and get fresh air, or just watch. The desk was set apart, and separated with a little wall, so I was able to use my laptop & have the light on without disturbing my children. Also, the room came with a fridge that we could use. The Grand Californian has a stocked fridge with a tiny area for a couple of bottles of water, soda, or baby bottle. If you touch anything, you'll be charged because it has a sensor on it. The Disneyland Hotel gave us the fridge that we could use. The DL Hotel also had the Neverland pool, which was described (and is usually pretty crowded), and another, more secluded pool, with a wading pool next to it, and a sandy area with a volleyball court. It's nice.

In answer to your other question, park tickets come separately. I recommend checking the prices for a package, which includes room & tickets, or getting the room & tickets separately. Sometimes it's less to get a package. There are various agencies, and if you click on the link in my signature, you'll reach Dreams Unlimited, which is affiliated with these boards. :)

We really loved the Grand California hotel. Room size was fine for just 3 of us. The location can't be beat. It was very nice to be in the heart of downtown disney and have the direct entrance to DCA. The pool area was not as elaborate as the Neverland pool but has a waterslide for older kids (and kids at heart) and a smaller water slide for toddlers. Storyteller's cafe has a great breakfast. Technically,it is a charactor breakfast with Chip and Dale and a few others. They play with the kids and do activities but they don't circulate. The buffet food is excellent and they bring you mickey waffles and pancakes to the table upon request.

Of the three Disney hotels, my favorite is the original...The Disneyland Hotel. As suggested request the Sierra Tower. It has the best location and you can't go wrong with either view. If you want Sierra *guaranteed* you will have to pay a higher price. The pool at Paradise Pier will be going under remodeling, I believe after summer, but not sure. Because the pool is small and unthemed I have booked mostly adults into that property. The :earsboy: Character Breakfasts :earsgirl: are fun to do. There are 4 in all. The best by far is Goofy's Kitchen located inside the Disneyland Hotel. In my opinion the worst was at Disney's Grand Californian, very boring barely any characters and they do not table hop for photos. The other two are Minnie & Friends located at Paradise Pier and Winnie the Pooh characters at the Plaza Inn located inside Disneyland at the end of main street on the right. All but Plaza Inn take reservations and if you do Goofy's Kitchen I strongly recommend you do this, otherwise the wait could be 15 min or 45 min.
