I am seriously considering a trip where we stay at a Universal hotel, FOTL is very tempting. I would like to stay in one with a cool pool for the kids which is the nicest? Are there any character meals in the resorts?

The first year we went, we stayed at the Hard Rock. The pool was beautiful and my kids loved it. The Portofino pool is also very beautiful with a slide that my kids and my husband loved. On certain nights they would show a movie by the pool. I am not sure how they did this, because we stayed in the parks until they closed and we missed the movies.

I think each pool has cool aspects. RPR doesnt have a slide but offers the largest pool and beautiful surroundings. PBH has 3 pools and a cool slide at their beach pool. They all have hot tubs.

Keep in mind you can pool hop so maybe just pick the hotel that appeals to you best. All 3 offer character dinners on different nights as well as other entertainment and dive in movies at the pool. They all also have cabanas if that interests you.

The average room is largest at PBH then HRH and finally at around 325 sq ft RPR.

We enjoyed the RPR and thought it had the best theme. We visited all the resorts and definitely thought the RPR was most suited to our liking. The pool is great, the service was very good. It wasn't as close to the parks as HRH but we enjoyed the walk which took about 10 to 15 minutes. Or you can take the boat! Loved Emerils Choup Chop restaurant, but don't waste your money at the other on site restaurants. City Walk has great food at Hard Rock, Latin Quarter, and margaritaville isn't bad.

you can pool hop at all 3 resorts.
so, don't make the pool the deciding factor on where you will stay.

it is encouraged to pool hop at universal resorts.
guests are treated very respectfully at all of them, if you stay there or not.

yes, character dining is available at the onsite hotels.
