We might be down for a visit at the end of Oct. Hubby would like to spend a couple of days at the beach. We'd like something quieter and family oriented.

How far to each coast? Is the east coast warm enough to swim in? Up here the water rarely gets about 60!Brrrrrrrrrrrr.

Thanks!!

I can't say for certain but I think you would be better off on the Gulf Coast.

If you do decide on the Atlantic, I wouldn't choose Daytona as we didn't find it a pretty beach.

Well Renee, we're a little biased on this one, but ya gotta love the ocean. Our corner of Fla. has pretty beaches (a scant 3 hr. drive!). Can't remember much from the "Daytona days", Ormond Beach is right next to it and have heard a lot of positives about it.
Drive from Orlando to Daytona is roughly an hour. To the beach, maybe 10-15 more mins.
If ya'll get up around here, there's lots of good oyster roasts in late Oct.!
Jim

Thanks for the responses! I forgot to specify ocean beaches, LOL! Our lakes do get warmer than 60!

H20jag: are you guys on the gulf coast?

New Smyrna Beach. Make sure you go to Chase's on the beach for Lunch. It is GREAT!

I always recommend Siesta Beach on the Gulf coast. Its in Sarasota about 2 hours from WDW.

Thanks so much for the recommendations!!

Renee,
We're Atlantic side, 1st beach in Fla.
(Or last if you're leaving!)

We have always gone to Daytona for the summer and we love it there. I think the beaches are the best on the Atlantic Side. The sand its beautiful and the water is nice and clear. Not to mention there is a strip there you are still allowed to cruise on! They have tons of motor scooters, ATV's, souped up golf carts for rent to cruise the beaches. I would suggest Treasure Island Inn to you is really nice. Also the newest place to stay is Ocean Walk which is down on the North end of the strip next to the boardwalk and across the street to Adventure Island Water and Amusment park. If you like good family owned resturants go to Steve's Diner down on South Atlantic. It does'nt look all fancey but let me tell you it's a great bargin on the beach. All homemade to order meals. Everything from breakfast serves 24hrs a day to the Best Egg Plantpaream I've ever eaten! That's amazed me too! They have there own bakery and make there own breakfast muffins and wonderful Italian crusty bread which is served all you can eat with any order! On on trip back from US/IOA over Labor Day we stopped off in Daytona on the way home just to eat at Steve's Famous Diner! Enough Already, but I promise you'll like the beach and the food Daytona has to offer you.

Okay - here are my two beach suggestions - I love both of these - we love Guana River State Park Beach - it is on the Atlantic Side and has the highest sand dunes in Florida - it is a quiet beach that supposedly is where the Spaniards originally landed in Florida and looks like it might have when they arrived - with no development and is just beautiful. It is near St. Augustine - stay at the Bayfront Inn in St. Augustine right at the foot of the Bridge of Lions! They have great beds, a great little pool, free continental breakfast and you can take off on foot walking through the historic district when you are not on the beach. My gulf beach would have to be Venice Beach - drive towards Tampa and head south across the Sunshine Skyway - largest span bridge in the eastern US I think. It is a nice drive - about 150 miles max from Orlando and you cna find sharks teeth like crazy and my son said that the water looked like "high tide Gatorade". The town there is very quaint with little shops, etc. and the beach is very nice and family oriented. You can probably tell by this post that I LOVE both of these beaches.

Vote for the 2 hour drive to the gulf side, anywhere from clearwater down to sarasota florida is very nice with large white sand beaches. The alternative 1 hour drive to the atlantic coast we were sadly disappointed with and drove from daytona south to almost palm beach. The beaches were much smaller and not as well kept. We felt more family orientated on the west coast.

60 degrees!!!!! Do you wear a coat when you swim? LOL Sorry for some reason, I have never spent time on Florida beaches when we visit, I wonder why? ;)

We have been to many beaches including Daytona, Cocoa, Miami, Sarasota, St petes, Treasure Is, Clearwater & Caledisi.

Our choice would be The Gulf Coast over the Atlantic side everytime.

The best beach would have to be on Caledisi, which is an official Blue wave beach. It is 20 miles north of Clearwater. You have to get the boat across from Honeymoon Island, but its definitley worth the extra jouney. Caledisi is voted in the U.S. top 10 of best beaches year after year.

We are going down the last 2 weeks of August, 2004.

If we only can choose the East Coast, what would you
recommend?
How far is the actual Daytona Beaches and Cocoa Beaches from
WDW? Which is better?
How is the parking and the parking cost?

thanks

We were looking for the same thing for our stay this coming August- a quiet beach resort that was family oriented. A highly recommended resort was the just opened Hammock Beach (www.hammockbeach.com). A bit pricey, but when I called directly, they gave me a better quote than any of the discount places like Expedia, Travelocity, etc. 4 pools, lazy river, large slide, lots of kid friendly activities, golf for hubby, ocean front, etc. It is a condo resort, that also has guest rentals of the condos.

Supposedly less that 90 minutes from Universal, located 15 miles south of St. Augustine.

An internet search of the place yielded only positive reviews from previous guests. Most were 5 stars out of 5, one person gave it a 4 star rating due to it being a bit remote (just what we want though).

Last August, we stayed at St. Pete beach . We were told we were there during a red tide, however, at the time I could not find any verification of this on the Florida Red Tide websites and the resorts certainly weren't commenting. Anyway, the amount of dead and dying fish/eels/horseshoe crabs at the tide line was rather disconcerting. You literally had to tip toe your way through the carcasses. And forget wading in the water. I realize that swimming in red tide water is not harmful to most healthy people, yet everything I read said don't swim if there are dead fish. When we were there, every wave carried a few more dead fish. Making sand castles at tide's edge brought numerous unwelcome dead visitors. The stench was terrible. We had reserved an ocean front room, but couldn't open the doors because of the dead fish smell. I have to add that I grew up on the coast, so am pretty immune to most beach related smells and various washed up things. What was the most disturbing for us was that our children were very upset with all the gasping fish on the beach. They wanted to throw them all back in. We walked the beach at least a mile both ways from our hotel and the fish kill was the same. The hotels along the beach made no effort to clean the fish off the beach during the day. It was so bad, we actually cut our stay short. Called Universal to see if we could get a room a day earlier and headed off to Orlando. Hopefully, this was an isolated incident.

However, this year, we are trying the Atlantic side. Can't persuade Hubby to give the gulf coast another try, especially after reading the Florida red tide websites that August through November is the prime red tide season and is not all that uncommon in the St. Pete area.

Florida residents, feel free to step in here...is red tide really as prolific as the websites seem to indicate, or did we just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time? Interestingly enough, the 1995 picture on this website (http://www.mote.org/~mhenry/rtchrono.phtml) is EXACTLY what our beach looked like. We took lots of pictures and I compared them and the density of dead fish was the same as in 1995. The good thing is that it looks like the waters have been clear this summer.

Additionally, if anybody else knows about this new Hammock Beach resort, both pros and cons, we would love to hear about it.

Anybody been to St Pete beach this year? We're planning on spending a few days there in beginning of August, but if it's trashy, we'll change our plans. Anyone know? Any recommendations on where to stay there?

We enjoyed our stay at St. Petersburg Beach years ago and will be returning in a couple of days. We like the gulf side and enjoy watching the sunsets!

Goofy! hammock beach looks awesome! What was the rate you were quoted, if you do not mind me asking. It is a bit pricey, but looks very nice.

Zaxmom,
we were quoted (and booked) a $199.00 rate for a 1 bedroom condo. King bed in bedroom, queen pull-out sofa in living room. Jacuzzi bath, 2 tv's, kitchen.

Since it is a "cashless" resort, there is an additional $20.00 nightly resort fee. But this covers valet parking, fitness club, beach chairs, etc and best of all - all tips. There is no tipping in the resort. The reservation agent was pretty adament in telling me that. So, really, for only $219.00 per night, this is less than rack rate at RPH.

They know we have 3 kids, and they were comfortable with us bringing the air mattress. Otherwise, the only other room left was a 3 bedroom for over 450.00 a night.

Tee times were $175.00 before 10, 165.00 between 10-2, 155 after 2 for 18 holes and 85 for 9 holes after 3. But make sure you have concierge make the tee-time, otherwise it is even more (choke!)

are you stalking me  I live here in Venice. :teeth:

I love Siesta Key beach...absolutely beautiful, but it gets crowded. Venice Beach is nice...not the pretty white sand like Siesta Key, but much more laidback...probably because of the 95% of the town population being over 75 years of age
