. At this time, remote check-in service is only available for guests flying domestically on the following airlines: American, Continental, jetBlue, Delta (including Song), and United (including Ted).
No, you don't need to ride the DME bus to use Resort Airline Check-In. Technically, it's not even part of DME. As long as you're a guest at the resort and are flying one of those airlines, you can use the luggage checking service regardless of how you get yourself back to MCO.
People who are staying at a Disney owned-and-operated resort AND flying one the airlines named above get the following privileges:
At the end of vacation, they get to bring their luggage to the resort lobby and check it in. After that, they won't see it again until it's on their home airport's baggage claim carousel. Also, they get to check in for their flight and get their actual boarding passes. Aside from not having to lug the luggage to the airport, this process also saves time because they are already checked in for their flight. In addition, they also get to ride a Disney's Magical Express (DME) bus back to the airport (for free) if they choose.
People NOT flying one of those airlines still get the free bus ride back to the airport, but don't get the luggage handling or boarding pass/check-in privileges.
By the way, when people ARRIVE at Orlando's airport to begin their vacation, EVERYONE can use the luggage handling and free bus ride of DME, regardless of airline, as long as they are registered guests at a Disney owned-and-operated resort. EVERYONE can skip baggage claim and have their luggage "magically appear" in their resort room a few hours later.
To make this even clearer. You must have a DME reservation to get the free transportation and luggage delivery. If you don't have a reservation you can pay Mears for a bus ride and you will have to carry your own luggage.
