We are flying Halifax to Newark, then on to Orlando. Will we clear customs in Newark on the way there, and Halifax on the way back? :confused3 I'm sure we clear customs in Halifax on the way home but I am not sure about the trip there.
:flower:

I'm not sure where Newark is but if it is in Canada then Halifax is where you'll go through customs. For eg: My sister in law was in Vancouver and flew to Toronto for a hour lay over and wanted us to visit her on her way to Florida. But she technically was in the states because she passed through customs in Vancouver, so we couldn't talk or see her. She basically was behind this clear wall and could almost reach her but they wouldn't allow her too.

I hope this helps.
From Canada but never heard of Newark

You'll clear customs in Canada both ways. So whatever your point of departure is from Canada (in your case Halifax) you'll go through customs there. On the way back you'll clear customs at whatever your point of entry to Canada is.

Basically the US has customs officers in Canadian airports, we don't have customs officers in US airports.

For Disneyof3 - no idea why your sister would have gone through customs in Vancouver, she should have gone through in Toronto. In fact she should have had to reclaim her luggage in Toronto, haul it over to the customs point and have it re-scanned and dealt with customs there.

Newark is in NJ, one of the busiest airports in the US.

I don't think Halifax is one of the airports where you preclear before entering the US (you do in *I think* seven Canadian airports...Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary, Vancouver, Montreal, I don't know which others.)

Anyhow, because you aren't preclearing, then yes, you'll have to get your luggage and clear in Newark before proceeding on to Orlando. Make sure you ahve ample time for this.

I think we have 2 1/2 hours. I guess if we are going threw Customs' in Newark, we will be changing terminals? :guilty: I went on their website to see what restaurants, shops, play places, there are. It seems HUGE. :earsboy:

When I go to the states from Halifax, I clear customs in Halifax unless I have a stop over in Toronto first. Yes, you can clear customs at the Halifax Airport.

Newark is big.

Changing terminals will depend on your carrier and plane size etc....

It's a very large airport. Happichickali just confirmed that you WILL clear customs in halifax, which is good. So which carrier are you flying Halifax to Newark on, and then which carrier are you on newark to Orlando? Let me know and maybe I can give you more info.

We are flying Continental into Newark and out of Newark to Orlando. Thanks happichickali for confirming we are going threw customs in Halifax. I will make sure that we are there in plenty of time. :flower:

I am also confused about where we clear customs... We are flying Edmonton to Chicago, then onto Orlando. On the way back, we fly Miami to Chicago O'hare and then back to Edmonton. When will we clear customs, and do we have to go pick up our checked luggage to do this? Thanks so much! As you can see, I am not a seasoned US traveller! Bea, sorry to hijack your thread! I am from Nova Scotia originally, and sure do miss it!

You should be coming in and leaving from Terminal C. Very nice, large but easily to navigate. There are some restaurants and shops in the secure concourse area, so you won't need to leave the secure area to eat then go back through security, which is a nice plus.

You'll clear customs in Edmonton.

When you fly out you'll take your luggage with you, talk to the lovely and kind Customs & Immigrations officer and then dump off your luggage to be checked for the plane.

When you come back you'll get off the plane and then stand in line to talk to Canada Customs. You won't have your bags with you at this point. This of this part as Customs Part A. Then you wait for your bags in a secure area, and once you have them you have to report to the Customs officer at the door, who most of the time will just wave you through. Every now and then they'll pull someone aside to go through their stuff and make sure they're not actually bringing back stuff that they haven't declared.

And speaking of declarations, on the way out you'll have to fill out & submit a form to the US customs saying where you're going in the US and who you are. On the way back in you'll have to fill out a form to submit to Canada customs saying who you are, where you live, when you left Canada, the amounts of liquor and tobacco products that you're bringing back into Canada with you and the value (in Canadian funds) of the items that you purchased/were given in the US and are bringing back. The US form is available at the check-in counter when you leave. The Canadian form you'll be given on the plane on the way home.

Ali, do you mean that you can clear USCustoms at the Halifax airport? Or are you talking about clearing Canadian customs on the way home...??

I was under the impression that Halifax has only just been granted US Custom pre-clearance just recently, and that plans were in place to implement sometime this year??

:sunny: and Confused!!LOL!!

When we flew on Continental :flower: from Halifax to Newark and then on to Orlando, we had to clear customs in Newark. Halifax was not equipped to clear us through customs. That was last spring but friends of mine just returned on Thursday and they also went through customs in Newark. I also heard that Halifax has recently been given clearance to start the service soon, but it hasn't started yet. On our trip in two weeks, we expect to go through customs in Newark, but there is plenty of time. You don't have to change terminals--it is not difficult to manage. Hope this helps!

Well, I guess your right. I'm not sure what they had me doing then. I only flew directly from Halifax into the states once. Usually I connect to Toronoto and then fly threw. Is it possible that I cleared Canadian customs in Halifax?

Ali

PS - SplashMom, you are still wearing your counter code in your signature.

As of earlier this month... you still are not able to clear US Customs & Immigration in Halifax before you fly to the US. You will have to clear customs at the first spot you "touch down" in the US.

When I asked the counter agent at Delta... she said yes, they are SUPPOSED to be getting it set up SOMETIME.. but she seemed to be A TEENY BIT skeptical. ;) She said they have been talking about it for a long time... so hopefully this time they mean it. :)

You will someday be able to clear customs in Halifax...whenever the renovations are complete. That should be sometime this century I hope!
For now, all trips to the US from Halifax you clear customs at your first destination in the US.

When we flew from Toronto to MCO we cleared customs in Orlando. It was odd. The time before that ( 3 years ago) we did customs here and then flew. This time it was odd. We went through security and I was chosen randomly to be searched. We got on the plane and flew to MCO. Get to MCO get our luggage. Take our luggage to another converor belt and head on to customs. Stand in line for a while. Clear customs. Then go through security AGAIN. This time I have to take off my shoes and belt ( Um Im already there and not planning on leaving for a week?) Finally get down to the level where our luggage is being unloaded by hand from big carts off a elevator. My luggage no problem it is one of the first off. DH 's ...the last. Now they had been together when we moved them over for the secondary screening.

When we finally arrive at our hotel and unpack we notice a note in DH's luggage at the Orlando end saying that it had been inspected and opened. Now why was that not done in Toronto? What is Toronto not doing that Orlando need to check again? Everything was fine with his luggage and Im sure it was just a random check. Just was a little bit odd.

My sister who flew from Toronto to NY to Orlando when through in NY for customs, no extra searchs or xrays when they got to Orlando for them.
