My family and I are planning on going to Virginia Beach in a few weeks, I've never been before, any suggestions on where we should stay? :confused3

We just returned from a weeks stay at Virginia Beach. We stayed at the Day's Inn Oceanfront. It was a comfortable room with a private balacony overlooking the atlantic. Its right in the middle of all the fun, free breakfast and access to the ocean by walking out the back door. We loved it! We're going back in late August!:yay:

We went years ago and rented a house just south of VA Beach (within driving distance to the boardwalk VA Beach). It was a beautiful rsidential area that only rented to families and it had a private beach. The house we rented was not on the beach, just across the street but it was nice because it was able to have a pool. It was huge and pricey but we went with all my IL's families so it was an affordable family vacation. I wish I remember the name of the town/city to help you.

We stay there often. Can you give me a little more idea of what kind place you want to syat in? Cheap? One the ocean? Fancy?

Most of the chain hotels are owned by one organization Gold Key. They own a lot of the restaurants and souvenier shop too. The prices are controlled. They have a few large timeshares there too, they look really nice. If you want to see them they will be HAPPY to set you up with a presentation. High pressure and a lot of BS. I dealt with them once and..never again.

Most of the chain hotels are the same as you would get anywhere else in the world. The oceanfron is made up of low end chain hotels (Quality Inn, Holiday Inn etc) and smaller privately owned hotel. Those are hit or miss for how modern they are and can often cost exactly the same as the chain hotels.

DO NOT get fooled by picture on the internet. Read reviewes and BELIEVE them.

The Days Inn Oceanfront was a standard oversized room with free wi-fi, free breakfast, fridge in the room along with a table and chair. The balcony had two chairs with a small table. They also have an indoor pool. The staff was very friendly we had no problems. We paid $130 a night Mon-Thur then the price went up to $150 going into the weekend. Apparently we stayed there the last week before the summer prices went into effect. So even with AAA, the prices have increased.

The only thing I didnt like was the limited parking. They have a very small parking lot directly in front of the hotel. So if you leave you may come back to no space at all, and will be forced to park you car on a near by street. So to prevent that from happening, we used a cab service and they also have free shuttle service for the popular areas.

go to tripadvisor.com and research the hotels in Va. Beach really, really well!!! there are many, if not most pretty awful hotels down there tripadvisor is the best webaite to really get the scoop on hotels but be careful with the hotels down there the photo's that are on the hotels websites are no where near what they are really like the hotels down there arre really known for misrepresenting their accommodations

I stayed at the Budget Lodge at the Beach last year over Labor Day. I got it for $92.00 per night via Expedia. It was no frills and at the end of Atlantic but all I wanted was a decent hotel room with a bed and bathroom and this place fit the bill.

If you're staying a week, I'd do a rental in Sandbridge, hands down. If you're staying just a few days, there's a hotel called the Virginia Beach Resort and Conference Center that's decent. Like pp's have said, a lot of motels right along the strip are pretty icky, so do your homework.

I second that! We've been to VB a few times with extended family and have rented a house on Sandbridge Beach . . .we used Seibert Realty, you should check out their website it has all the homes available and pricing for every family.

You gotta really talk budget. Renting a house in Sandbridge can be pricy IF you can get it.

Most hotels on the ocean are around $200+ per night. Stick with a Nationally Known chain or do a LOT of research. I have stayed at the Courtyard Marriott and found it to be VERY pricy for a Coutrtyard but one of the nicer hotels. The Ramada is decent but doesn't come with a refrigerator or a microwave which is standard in most hotels of that range. They would give them to you for 15.00 each a nice. I thought that was robbery considering that most hotels provide that free of charge, even the yucky ones.

There is the Hilton which is $300+ a night and easily the nicest hotel on the boardwalk. If money was no object I would stay there. If I had to worry about it I would look at the chain hotels.

Virginia Beach is a LOT of fun there is so much to do on the Boardwalk.

our family likes the CAvalier Hotel http://www.cavalierhotel.com/

Its right on the ocean... has a nice pool-side bar, a couple of restaurants, great location just a stone's throw from the end of the boardwalk, the original hotel has a fantastic history, has a daily kid's club, bike rentals, and the staff is super nice....and a great breakfast buffet!

When we're in Virginia Beach, we stay at the Quality Inn Oceanfront. It's right on the beach (at around 8th st, I think) and very family oriented. Activities at the pool every afternoon (ice cream socials, popcorn, etc), and reasonably priced.

I recently stayed there while my girls were at a cheer competition. We loved the Hampton Inn Oceanfront North. It is right on the beach, all rooms overlook the ocean. Free breakfast is basic but good and plenty of it. Recently renovated, it was super clean The Neptune statue is practically in front of the hotel. I thought this was the nicer end of the beach. The music pavilion is right next door, but we loved hearing the music. PI pizza is across the street and has good food. Also, the Hilton is next door with the outdoor lounge and fire pits. I was really nervous because a lot of hotels had a lot of bad reviews. But, we thought this hotel was great.

Other teammates stayed at the Hampton Inn Oceanfront south. It was very similar, but not as nice and the pool is tiny there.

As a resident of Virginia Beach I do not have too much experience with the hotels, but I have had friends and/or family stay a few places that were liked. As previously said, the Hilton on 31st is a fabulous hotel, but it is very pricey. The Sheraton Inn at 36th Street is nice too, both of these hotels are ocean front properties. And the last hotel that I know is nice is the Farfield Inn and Suites and again this is an ocean front property. Read the reviews, as this is your best guide.

Sandbridge is a nice alternative, however, as said, it is very pricey. If you are looking for peace and quiet off of the beaten path than Sandbridge is a good choice. There aren't too many places to eat down there and there aren't any touristy things to do and it is a good 30 minute drive to the ocean front, which can be longer with summer traffic.

Virginia Beach and the surrounding area have some great things to see and do. Good luck with your planning and have a nice trip.

A good website to visit to let you know about the beach happenings is www.beachstreetusa.com. It will tell you about the shows and fireworks, etc.

We stayed here last year and loved it. Lots to do, great views, great rooms, I wanted to go back this year but DH voted for Hilton Head. Also great, btw.

Not to be nitpicky, but Sandbridge is 30 min from the Boardwalk, not oceanfront. The reason I suggested it, is you can rent a home several blocks from oceanfront, or rent a home directly oceanfront, depending on preference, and budget.

However, you're completely correct in restaurant/fast food places. Sandbridge is isolated, and you definitely need to plan meals, especially with small kids, like mine, who need to eat 24/7!!
